In a small town called Saratov, a small girl named Polina who's parents had died from a smoke inhalation during a wildfire in their cabin and have been left orphaned. She was eventually raised by her grandparents and adopted a Russkiy Toy named Yana. A year later, Polina was left with no friends and her grandparents forbids her from going into the lake during winter. Sometime later, Polina gets hypothermia after falling into the cold lake by accident. Soon, Polina was diagnosed with influenza with and was hospitalized. The pediatrician Dr. Yablonsky confirms that the illness is just another complication that can lead to death.
Yana sleeps on the bed without Polina, as her grandparents tries to converge enough money to buy medicine. The next morning, Yana runs out the door and finds out that Polina might "go to sleep forever". Saddened, Yana falls asleep into a pile of snow.
