The only one who completely accepts Herman's sexuality is his bisexual mother Tina (Carrie-Ann Moss) who is engaged in a lesbian relationship with a Tax Accountant Diane Cherry (Cameron Diaz) who begins to spend time with Herman, his boyfriend and 16 year old Timothy.

Tragedy strikes as Timothy is dealt a vicious beating by the school bully and Herman comes to the bully's home to confront the father about his encouragment towards his son to beat up his little brother.

A fight occurs between the two and after Herman knocks the man down he is unfairly struck from behind with a glass bottle and falls to the ground outside hitting the curb with his head at fatal speed.

Herman ends up in acoma and the whole family comes to accept Herman's sexuality.

All including Martin spend time at the hospital with Herman who eventually passes away in his sleep.

A court case then happens to oversee the conviction of Herman's attacker in which the lawyor fighting for his conviction is indeed Diane's younger sister Betty Oran (Carey Mulligan).

They win the case and the bully's father is put behind bars and his kind-hearted mother who had left comes to collect her son at which point before she comes to get him he comes to the Atting residence and apologizes to the family, stating he is sorry about Herman and gives a personal apology to Timothy.

Tina then arrives at the Atting residence after the former bully departs and presents her girlfriend Diane to them.

Lars and the others welcome her into the house and Timothy gives a big hug to both.

Herman's boyfriend Martin then arrives and joins them and then finally Herman's bestfriend Janey who possessed a gay brother who passed away after a group of people bashed him to death.
