U2 (formerly Channel I) is a television network in Aurora, owned by UBCTribuneMedia, itself a subsidiary of Excable Group. It serves as secondary programming to the main UBC network.
History[]
The network started as Channel I, a local channel for the Heartlands region, in 1998. It was owned by CivicMedia, which also owned Telecivic (ACVC-TV), a local station in Portville.
In 2001, Telecivic became a network with the acquisition of a station in Washington. Channel I was kept independent from Telecivic, but later expanded in 2004, replacing ACVC’s old repeater stations in Clementine and Greene Counties, as the wide availability of cable had made these translators redundant.
In 2008, CivicMedia was acquired by UBCTribuneMedia, which was forced to sell the Telecivic stations to Lyndon Communications by the AMRC (Auroran Media Regulatory Commission). However, Channel I remained part of UBCTribuneMedia.
In 2011, after UBCTribuneMedia’s acquisition by Excable, Channel I was renamed to U2, an extension of the UBC brand.
Trivia[]
