Released by Starwell International Pictures on July 27, 2015 to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Bugs Bunny's official debut in A Wild Hare (1940), the documentary explores the character’s creation by Tex Avery and Chuck Jones, his vocal performance by Mel Blanc, and his evolution into a cultural icon. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised its balance of scholarly insight and affectionate tribute, and it later aired on PBS as part of the American Masters series.

Synopsis[]

This feature-length documentary takes an in-depth look at the creation, cultural impact, and enduring legacy of one of the world’s most beloved animated icons: Bugs Bunny. From his mischievous debut in the late 1930s to becoming Warner Bros.' wisecracking mascot and a symbol of resilience during wartime, the film traces the rabbit’s journey through decades of changing animation styles, shifting pop culture landscapes, and evolving audiences.

Blending archival footage, rare behind-the-scenes materials, and interviews with historians, animators, voice actors, and celebrity fans, The Life and Laughs of Bugs Bunny explores how Bugs' trademark wit and irreverence made him not only a cartoon character, but also a reflection of American humor and attitude. The film covers his key collaborators—from Tex Avery and Chuck Jones to Mel Blanc—while examining his influence on comedy, advertising, and generations of animated characters that followed.

Celebrating his timeless catchphrases and unforgettable rivalries with Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam, and others, the documentary paints a portrait of Bugs as more than just a rabbit with a “What's up, Doc?”—he’s a cultural trickster, a symbol of rebellion, and a figure who continues to make audiences laugh worldwide.

A warm, entertaining, and insightful tribute, The Life and Laughs of Bugs Bunny captures why, even after 75 years, America’s favorite hare is still hopping strong.
