The Fame Monster (also stylized as The Fame Monser) is the second music record by US American singer-songwriter Lina Morgana. It was initially released on 17th of November, 2009, by Streamline Records, KonLive Distribution, and Interscope Records. It was marketed in two formats: as a standalone eight-track EP and as a double-disc reissue of her debut album, The Fame.

A conceptual companion piece to her debut, The Fame Monster explores the darker side of celebrity, using metaphors of monsters to represent various personal demons and anxieties (fame, love, sex, death, and alcoholism) that Lina encountered following her rapid rise to stardom. The project is noted for its cohesive, darker synth-pop and gothic-inspired sound, a significant artistic evolution from the glittering pop of The Fame.

The EP was a universal critical and commercial success, producing the number-one hit single "Bad Romance", as well as "Cellphone" (featuring Beyoncé), and "Alejandro". It won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2011 and is frequently cited by critics as one of the greatest pop albums and EPs of all time, cementing Lina's status as a visionary pop artist.

About[]

Background and conception[]

The concept for The Fame Monster emerged directly from the whirlwind and pressures of The Fame Ball Tour (2009). Lina described the period following her debut's success as isolating and overwhelming, giving her a new set of fears and anxieties. She conceptualized these negative emotions as "monsters".

In interviews, Lina stated that each song on the EP represents a different "fame monster", a specific fear she had to confront:

  • "Bad Romance" — fear of monsters
  • "Alejandro" — fear of sex
  • "Monster" — fear of love/stalkers
  • "Speechless" — fear of death
  • "Dance in the Dark" — fear of the media
  • "Cellphone" — fear of toxic relationships
  • "So Happy I Could Die" — fear of addiction, namely alcoholism
  • "Teeth" — fear of truth

Lina initially wanted to release the new songs as a standalone, low-priced EP to thank her fans for their support, though it was also bundled with The Fame for new listeners.

Recording and production[]

Recording took place during breaks on The Fame Ball Tour in 2009. Lina reunited with her primary collaborator from The Fame, RedOne, with whom she crafted the lead single "Bad Romance" and other tracks like "Monster" and "So Happy I Could Die". She also sought new collaborators to expand her sound.

She worked with Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, who produced the futuristic, hip-hop-inflected "Cellphone", and Fernando Garibay, a key architect of the EP's cinematic, darker sound who co-produced "Dance in the Dark", "Speechless", and "Alejandro". Teddy Riley also contributed to the production of "Speechless".

The sound of The Fame Monster is notably more atmospheric and layered than its predecessor. It draws inspiration from 1980s gothic rock, industrial music, and European electropop, creating a sense of drama and unease that perfectly complements its thematic content.

Music and lyrics[]

Musically, The Fame Monster trades the carefree, party-ready anthems of The Fame for a more intense and sonically adventurous palette. "Bad Romance" is built on a chilling choir chant and a pulsing, aggressive synth line. "Alejandro" incorporates a melancholic Europop beat, while "Speechless" is a powerful rock ballad featuring layered harmonies and a bluesy guitar solo.

Lyrically, the project is Lina's most personal and vulnerable work to that point. While still using metaphor and allegory, the songs deal directly with her struggles: the paranoia of "Monster", the anxiety of "Cellphone", the heart-wrenching plea to a loved one to quit smoking in "Speechless", and the commentary on the media's destructive gaze in "Dance in the Dark".

Artwork and aesthetics[]

The cover arts, shot by renowned photographers Hedi Slimane and Nick Knight, was a radical departure. It features a stark, high-contrast black-and-white photo of Lina. The EP version presents Lina with long black wig, partially covering her face, crying black tears; imagery inspired by Kayako from the 2004 movie The Grudge. The double-disc edition features Lina with a triangular blond chanel wig, wearing an oversized reflective black coat, raising the collar to cover the lower half of her face; imagery inspired by Dracula hiding behind his cape. A vinyl picture disc edition of The Fame Monster features the "blonde" cover on the A-side and "brunette" cover on the B-side, like yin and yang. The imagery drew direct inspiration from gothic horror and fashion photography, setting the tone for the EP's darker themes. The accompanying music videos, particularly for "Bad Romance" (directed by Francis Lawrence), became cultural events in their own right, known for their high-fashion references and cinematic narrative complexity.

This cohesive, dark romantic visual theme extended into the era's music videos. The opulent and unsettling "Bad Romance" (directed by Francis Lawrence) and the stylized, religious-iconography-filled "Alejandro" (directed by Steven Klein) became integral chapters in the project's narrative. They translated the EP's themes of fear, obsession, and monstrosity into cinematic spectacles, cementing The Fame Monster's status as a landmark in 21st-century pop visual culture. The use of acclaimed fashion photographers and designers solidified Lina's transition from a pop star into a bona fide fashion and art-world icon.

The music video for "Cellphone", directed by Jonas Åkerlund, is a high-octane, visually dense short film that serves as the climactic sequel to the narrative begun in the "Paparazzi" video. It extends the album's themes of media suffocation and toxic fame into a pulpy, female revenge saga. The video is a masterclass in product placement-as-ironic-commentary, filled with intentionally blatant references to brands like Wonderbread, Virgin Mobile, and Diet Coke. This aligns with Lina's critique of the consumerism inherent in fame.

Release and promotion[]

The Fame Monster was released globally in November, 2009. Its promotion was dominated by the monumental Monster Ball Tour (2009–2011), which Lina described as "the first-ever pop electro opera". The tour was a theatrical spectacle that narrated a story of overcoming fears and monsters in a fantastical New York City, perfectly bringing the EP's concept to life on stage.

Lina also premiered the songs through iconic performances at the 2009 VMAs ("Speechless" and a show-opening performance of "Paparazzi") and the 2009 American Music Awards ("Bad Romance" and "Speechless").

Commercial performance[]

The EP was an immediate success. It debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 chart based on the standalone EP's sales. The Fame Monster / The Fame bundle also reached high positions on charts worldwide, helping The Fame return to the top of charts over a year after its initial release.

"Bad Romance" became Lina's signature hit, reaching number one in over ten countries, including US Billboard Hot 100. "Cellphone" and "Alejandro" also achieved massive international success, both topping charts across Europe and landing in the Top 10 of the Hot 100.

Critical reception and legacy[]

The Fame Monster received universal acclaim upon release. Critics hailed it as a masterful evolution of Lina's sound, praising its cohesive theme, ambitious production, and lyrical depth. It was seen as proof that Lina was a serious artist capable of transforming personal angst into profound pop art.

It won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2011. The "Bad Romance" music video won a record-breaking eight MTV Video Music Awards in a single night.

The EP's legacy is immense. It is often credited with solidifying the "dark pop" sub-genre that would influence countless artists throughout the 2010s. Its fusion of high fashion, horror imagery, and pop music set a new standard for visual and conceptual artistry in the mainstream. The Fame Monster is not viewed as a simple collection of leftovers but as a crucial, self-contained chapter in Lina's career that demonstrated her depth and forever separated her from her pop contemporaries.

Alejandro[]

(I know that we are young, and I know that you may love me)
(But I just can’t be with you like this anymore, Alejandro)

She's got both hands in her pocket
And she won’t look at you, won't look at you
She hides true love, en su bolsillo
She’s got a halo 'round her finger around you

You know that I love you boy
Hot like Mexico, rejoice
At this point I've gotta choose
Nothing to lose

Don't call my name, don't call my name, Alejandro
I’m not your babe, I’m not your babe, Fernando
Don’t wanna kiss, don’t wanna touch
Just smoke my cigarette and hush
Don't call my name, don't call my name, Roberto

Alejandro, Alejandro,
Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro

Stop, please, just let me go
Alejandro, just let me go

She's not broken, she's just a baby
But her boyfriend's like her dad, just like her dad
And all those flames that burned before him
Now he's gonna firefight, gotta cool the bad

You know that I love you boy
Hot like Mexico, rejoice
At this point I've gotta choose
Nothing to lose

Don't call my name, don't call my name, Alejandro
I'm not your babe, I'm not your babe, Fernando
Don't wanna kiss, don't wanna touch
Just smoke my cigarette and hush
Don't call my name, don't call my name, Roberto

Alejandro, Alejandro,
Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro

Don't bother me, don’t bother me, Alejandro
Don't call my name, don't call my name; bye, Fernando
I'm not your babe, I'm not your babe, Alejandro
Don't wanna kiss, don't wanna touch, Fernando

Don't call my name, don't call my name, Alejandro
I'm not your babe, I'm not your babe, Fernando
Don't wanna kiss, don't wanna touch
Just smoke my cigarette and hush
Don't call my name, don't call my name, Roberto

Alejandro, Alejandro,
Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro

Monster[]

Don't call me Lina
I've never seen one like that before
Don't look at me like that
You amaze me

He ate my heart
He a-a-ate my heart (You little monster)
He ate my heart
He a-a-ate my heart out (You amaze me)
He ate my heart
He a-a-ate my heart
He ate my heart
He a-a-ate my heart out (Big boy)

Look at him
Look at me
That boy is bad and honestly
He's a wolf in disguise
But I can't stop staring in those evil eyes

I asked my girlfriend if she'd seen you 'round before
She mumbled something while we got down on the floor, baby
We might've fucked not really sure, don't quite recall
But, something tells me that I've seen him, yeah

That boy is a monster,
Mo-mo-mo-monster
That boy is a monster,
Mo-mo-mo-monster
That boy is a monster,
Mo-mo-mo-monster
That boy is a monster,
Er-er-er-er

He ate my heart (I love that girl)
He ate my heart (wanna talk to her, she’s hot as hell)
He ate my heart (I love that girl)
He ate my heart (wanna talk to her, she’s hot as hell)

He licked his lips
Said to me: "Girl you look good enough to eat"
Put his arms around me
Said: "Boy, now get your paws right off me"

I asked my girlfriend if she'd seen you 'round before
She mumbled something while we got down on the floor, baby
We might've fucked not really sure, don't quite recall, (Oh yeah)
But, something tells me that I've seen him, yeah

That boy is a monster,
Mo-mo-mo-monster (Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster,
Mo-mo-mo-monster (Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster,
Mo-mo-mo-monster (Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster,
Er-er-er-er

He ate my heart (I love that girl)
He ate my heart (wanna talk to her, she’s hot as hell)
He ate my heart (I love that girl)
He ate my heart (wanna talk to her, she’s hot as hell)

He ate my heart
He a-a-ate my heart
Instead he's the monster in my bed
He ate my heart
He a-a-ate my heart
Instead he's the monster in my bed

I wanna Just Dance but he took me home instead
Uh oh! There was a monster in my bed
We French kissed on a subway train
He tore my clothes right off
He ate my heart then he ate my brain

Uh-oh uh-oh (I love that girl)
(Wanna talk to her, she’s hot as hell)
He ate my heart
He a-a-ate my heart (I love that girl)
He ate my heart (wanna talk to her, she's hot as hell)

That boy is a monster,
Mo-mo-mo-monster (Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster,
Mo-mo-mo-monster (Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster,
Mo-mo-mo-monster (Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster,
Er-er-er-er

That boy is a monster,
(He ate my heart) Mo-mo-mo-monster (Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster,
(He ate my heart) Mo-mo-mo-monster (Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster,
Mo-mo-mo-monster (Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster,
Er-er-er-er

Speechless[]

How?
Haaaa-oooo-wow?
H-ooow?

I can’t believe what you said to me
Last night when we were alone
You threw your hands up
Baby, you gave up, you gave up

I can't believe how you looked at me
With your James Dean glossy eyes
In your tight jeans with your long hair
And your cigarette stained lies

Could we fix you if you broke?
And is your punch line just a joke?

I'll never talk again
Oh boy you've left me speechless
You've left me speechless, so speechless

And I'll never love again
Oh boy you've left me speechless
You've left me speechless, so speechless

I can’t believe how you slurred at me
With your half wired broken jaw
You popped my heart seams
On my bubble dreams, bubble dreams

I can't believe how you looked at me
With your Johnnie Walker eyes
He's gonna get you and after he's through
There's gonna be no love left to rye

And I know that it's complicated
But I'm a loser in love
So baby raise a glass to mend
All the broken hearts
Of all my wrecked up friends

I'll never talk again
Oh boy you've left me speechless
You've left me speechless so speechless

And I'll never love again
Oh friend you've left me speechless
You've left me speechless, so speechless

How?
Haaaa-oooo-wow?
H-ooow?

How?
Haaaa-oooo-wow?
H-ooow?

And after all the drinks and bars that we've been to
Would you give it all up?
Could I give it all up for you?

And after all the boys and girls that we’ve been through
Would you give it all up?
Could you give it all up?
If I promise boy, to you

That I'll never talk again
And I'll never love again
I'll never write a song
Won't even sing along
I’ll never love again

How?

So speechless
You left me speechless, so speechless

Will you ever talk again?
Oh boy, why you so speechless?
You've left me speechless, so speechless

Some men may follow me
But you choose "death and company"
Why you so speechless? Oh-oh oh

Dance in the Dark[]

(Make it stop!)

Silicone,
Saline,
Poison
Inject me
Baby, I’m a free bitch
I’m a free bitch

Some girls won’t dance to the beat of the track
She won’t walk away, but she won’t look back
She looks good but her boyfriend says she’s a mess
She's a mess, she's a mess
Now the girl is stressed
She's a mess, she's a mess,
she’s a mess, she’s a mess

Tell 'em girls

Baby loves to dance in the dark
'Cause, when he's lookin', she falls apart
Baby loves to dance in the dark
Baby loves to dance in the dark
'Cause, when he's lookin', she falls apart
Baby loves to dance
Loves to dance in the dark

Run, run
Her kiss is a vampire grin
The moon lights her way while she's howlin' at him
She looks good but her boyfriend says she's a tramp
She's a tramp, she's a vamp
But she still does her dance
She's a tramp, she's a vamp
But she still kills the dance

(Tell 'em girls)

Baby loves to dance in the dark
'Cause, when he's lookin', she falls apart
Baby loves to dance in the dark
Baby loves to dance in the dark
'Cause, when he's lookin', she falls apart
Baby loves to dance
Loves to dance in the dark
(Tell 'em girls)
In the dark
She loves to dance in the dark
In the dark
She loves
she loves to dance in the dark

Marilyn
Judy
Sylvia
Tell 'em how you feel girls!

Work your Blonde Benét Ramsey
We'll haunt like Liberace
Find your freedom in the music
Find your Jesus, find your Kubrick
You will never fall apart
Diana, you’re still in our hearts
Never let you fall apart
Together we'll dance in the dark

Baby loves to dance in the dark
'Cause, when he's lookin', she falls apart
Baby loves to dance in the dark
Baby, yeah
Baby loves to dance in the dark
'Cause, when he's lookin', she falls apart
Baby loves to dance
Loves to dance in the dark
In the dark

So Happy I Could Die[]

Eh-eh, eh-eh
Ye-ha, ye-ha
Eh-eh, eh-eh
Aha-aha

Eh-eh, eh-eh
Ye-ha, ye-ha
Eh-eh, eh-eh
Aha-aha

I love that lavender blonde
The way she moves
The way she walks
I touch myself can’t get enough
And in the silence of the night
Through all the tears
And all the lies
I touch myself and it’s alright

Just give in
Don’t give up baby
Open up your heart and your mind to me

Just know when that glass is empty
That the world is gonna bend

Happy in the club with a bottle of red wine
Stars in our eyes ‘cuz we’re having a good time

Eh-eh, eh-eh
So happy I could die
Be your best friend
Yeah, I’ll love you forever
Up in the clouds, we’ll be higher than ever

Eh-eh, eh-eh
So happy I could die
And it’s alright

Eh-eh, eh-eh
Ye-ha, ye-ha
Eh-eh, eh-eh
Aha-aha

Eh-eh, eh-eh
Ye-ha, ye-ha
Eh-eh, eh-eh
Aha-aha

I am as vain as I allow
I do my hair
I gloss my eyes
I touch myself all through the night
And when something fall out of place
I take my time
I put it back
I touch myself
'till I’m on track

Just give in
Don’t give up baby
Open up your heart and your mind to me

Just know when that glass is empty
That the world is gonna bend

Happy in the club with a bottle of red wine
Stars in our eyes ‘cuz we’re having a good time

Eh-eh, eh-eh
So happy I could die
Be your best friend
Yeah I’ll love you forever
Up in the clouds
We’ll be higher than ever

Eh-eh, eh-eh
So happy I could die
And it’s alright

So happy I could die
And it’s alright

So happy I could die
And it’s alright

Eh-eh, eh-eh
Ye-ha, ye-ha
Eh-eh, eh-eh
Aha-aha

Eh-eh, eh-eh
Ye-ha, ye-ha
Eh-eh, eh-eh
Aha-aha

Happy in the club with a bottle of red wine
Stars in our eyes ‘cuz we’re having a good time

Eh-eh, eh-eh
So happy I could die
Be your best friend
Yeah I’ll love you forever
Up in the clouds, we’ll be higher than ever

Eh-eh, eh-eh
So happy I could die and it’s alright
