The Deities is a 2017 fantasy film written and directed by Ifan Barber. It stars Daniel Kaluuya as Dux, a young deity who is sent on a mission to Earth to stop a group of demons from destroying The City of Gods.

Synopsis

A young deity, Dux (Daniel Kaluuya) is offered an opportunity by Sano (Morgan Freeman) and Peritia (Glenn Close) to save the City of Gods and consequently the universe from the demons Malum (Milo Ventimiglia), Dolor (Julianne Moore) and Cassida (Mila Kunis). With the help of experienced Deities, Lautus (Lupita N'Yuongo), Oculi (Michael Sheen) and Vigil (Andy Serkis). But events are made more complicated when they're followed into the living realm by the rogue deity Venandi (Kristen Stewart).

Cast

Daniel Kaluuya as Dux

Dux is a Deity-in-training and hopes to one day succeed his grandfather as The Supreme God.

Michael Sheen as Oculi

Oculi is a powerful soothsayer God who has the rare power of travelling between realms, he also holds the capability of creating realms. He joins Dux's quest at the request of Sano.

Morgan Freeman as Sano

Sano is The Supreme God and Dux's grandfather. He is the ruler of The City of Gods and one of the most powerful Gods to exist. Sano's bloodline, however, is the only mortal bloodline in the realm of Gods and his life force will soon move over into another realm like his ancestors before him. Dux hopes to one day be his successor.

Milo Ventimiglia as Malum

Malum is evil personified, a demon from the Hell realm, he plots to destroy Earth in order to gain easier access to The City of Gods and claim rule over the entire universe.

Julianne Moore as Dolor

Dolor is the former Goddess of Medicine, but her experiments drove her crazy and caused her to become The Demon of Suffering after being banished to Hell by Sano. She joins Malum's plan as revenge.

Glenn Close as Peritia

Peritia is the Goddess of Education and Knowledge and Dux's mentor, she suggests Dux as a candidate for saving the City of Gods to Sano. She believes that anyone can achieve their goals if they put their mind to it, and she has witnessed both success and failure - being the oldest deity in the universe.

Lupita N'Yuongo as Lautus

Lautus is The Goddess of Love and Friendship and she joins Dux's quest as a moral compass, but she possesses much darker powers that may be useful, or fatal in the wrong hands.

Mila Kunis as Cassida

Cassida was once one of Sano's angels, and was chosen to accompany Dolor to hell in order to ensure she arrived there promptly. However, upon arrival, Dolor corrupted Cassida and she chose to remain in Hell. She is Dolor's faithful servant.

Kristen Stewart as Venandi

Venandi is a rogue deity who abandoned her education to become an Angel Hunter, but her job is becoming increasingly more difficult when the Angels are freed by Sano. She is hired by an unknown God to follow Dux on his quest and obtain information on him.

Andy Serkis as Vigil

Dux's Angel and companion, he accompanies him on his quest to Earth. Dux promises that if they're successful, he will free Vigil and they will become equals.

Idris Elba as The Narrator

Not much is known about The Narrator apart from the fact he witnessed the events of Dux's quest in some capacity.

Future

As the series is based on books, it was confirmed that the further five novels would also be adapted in chronological order:

  • The Deities 2: Fall of The City of Gods (2020)
  • The Deities 3: Resurgence of The City of Gods (2022)
  • The Deities 4: Battle of the Seven Realms (2024)
  • The Deities 5: Resurrection of the Ancients (2026)
  • The Deities 6: The Calling of Dux (2027)

It was also announced that the first of 4 spin-off films would enter production in 2017. Entitled The Origins of The Deities: The Trapping of Angels, the film would be released in summer 2019. The other 3, which would not be sequels, would be entitled:

  • Peritia: The First Goddess (2021)
  • The Supreme Bloodline (2023)
  • The Others: Below The Surface (2025)

It is understood that Universal plan to expand the universe further beyond these films.
