This is the story of five different families from different backgrounds living in the same cul-de-sac in Phoenix, Arizona: a working-class Caucasian family, a middle-class Afro-Latina blended family, an upper-class Vietnamese-Jewish-Indian family, a lower middle class Filipino family consisting of an orphaned daughter residing with her aunt, and a lower-class extended Chinese family.

- Jackie R. Jacobson as Jasmine McAfee, the oldest of the McAfees who is no-nonsense and bossy. She likes fashion, idolizes Selena Gomez and is a fan of Riverdale, Harry Potter and Stranger Things.
- Christopher Paul Richards as Bernard McAfee, Jasmine's dull-witted younger brother, unlike Paxton. He gets all C's and fails welding because of his stubbornness and laziness.
- Lulu Wilson as Sarah McAfee, Jasmine's younger sister who wants to be an actress when she grows up. She is a fan of Steven Universe.
- Jake T. Getman as Paxton McAfee, an intelligent child prodigy and the youngest of the McAfees. Unlike his older brother, he gets all straight As and his IQ is of 175.
- Paul Rudd as William "Will" McAfee, an uptight and no-nonsense father of the McAfees who is barley strict and works as a high school gym coach.
- Jennifer Aniston as Gertrude McAfee, the caring and sweethearted mother of the McAfees who works as a nurse at the local hospital.
- Caleel Harris as Seth Newman, the oldest of the Newmans. He is openly bisexual who came out of the closet weeks ago.
- Tamara Smart as Maisy Newman, the peaceful hippie of the Newmans who claims herself to be a "granola girl". Her favorite drink is a kale smoothie.
- Trinitee as Barbara "Barbie" Newman, the middle child of the Newmans who is very tomboyish and enjoys sports.
- Seth Carr as Elijah Newman, an optimistic boy who gets often too excited and is obsessed with superheroes. He reads comics, plays with his action figures and watches OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes 24/7.
- Kennedi Butler as Charlotte "Charlie" Newman, the youngest of the child of the Newmans who is very spoilt, manipulative and annoying.
- Danai Gurira as Phoebe Newman-Ornelas, the mother of the Newmans, the stepmother of Lucy and the husband of Leonardo. She works as a fashion designer. She is divorced.
- Jenna Ortega as Lucinda "Lucy" Ornelas, the angst-ridden geek teenage daughter of Leonardo who is obsessed with Tumblr. She barely seems to be cynical and stoic sometimes.
- Jaime Camil as Leonardo Ornelas, the stepfather of the Newman kids, the father of Lucy and the Hispanic husband of Phoebe. He lost his wife from committing suicide from drowning in a lake one day after she went missing.
- Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Emily Ha, a Vietnamese-Jewish girl who is a friend of Barbie's. She loves Vietnamese cuisine, Harry Potter and '90s cartoons.
- Olivia Munn as Jessica Ha, Emily's divorced lesbian mother who is married to Shakti. She works as a chef.
- Kamran Lucas as Yuvraj Acharya, the oldest of the Acharya kids who is a basketball player. He is bossy, treats himself like the leader and is very athletic.
- Leela Ladnier as Jahnavi Acharya, the middle child of the Acharya kids. She is an angst-ridden girl who dresses in grunge clothing, wears mostly black lipstick and listens to goth metal.
- Avantika Vandanapu as Ekanthika Acharya, the youngest of the Acharya kids. She is talented at playing the guitar and idolizes Lisa Loeb. She is somewhat shy and often nervous.
- Mindy Kaling as Shakti Acharya-Ha (née Patel), the widowed lesbian mother of the Acharya kids, the stepmother of Emily and the wife of Jessica. Her husband died from colon cancer. She works as a librarian.
- Ella Jay Basco as Min-jae Martinez, a young orphan of Korean and Filipino descent who lost her parents from a car crash on their way to the store. She is raised by her aunt, Josephine. She is paranoid about everything and has nightmares about her parents' deaths. Unfortunately, she is diagnosed with PTSD after the incident happened. She even treats Josephine like her mother.
- Siena Agudong as Amelia Ortiz, the middle child of the Ortiz family. She is a rebellious rock star who plays the guitar. She wishes to be at a rock band when she finishes high school.
- Mikee Castillo as Zoey Ortiz, the youngest of the Ortiz family. She is sassy and fashion-obsessed, yet very spoilt and manipulative.
- Jennifer Paz as Josephine Ortiz, the aunt of Min-jae who treats the latter like a daughter when her parents died.
- Jason Scott Lee as Reginald "Reggie" Li, a single father who lives with his sister, Erica.
- Madison Hu as Gretchen "Gretchie" Li, the not-so-bright one of the Li children. She mostly gets B's and C's instead of A's and is a straight-B student. She enjoys watching Netflix shows, except for 13 Reasons Why because it disturbs her.
- Gwendoline Yeo as Erica Chen, Reggie's sister, the aunt of the Li children and the mother of the Chen children.
- Matthew Zhang as Oliver Chen, the oldest of the Chens and Gretchie, Nathan and Paige's cousin. He is an energetic boy who loves sports, exercising and WWE wrestling.
- Peyton Elizabeth Lee as Tabitha "Tabby" Chen, a neat freak and a goody-two-shoes who is diagnosed with OCD. She is often germaphobic and spends her 24/7 putting hand sanitizer on her hands and wearing her surgical gloves.
- Forrest Wheeler as Nathan Li, a comic book-loving geek who likes action figures. He is a huge fan of The Big Bang Theory.
- Izaac Wang as Dustin Chen, the "cool guy" of the Chen family who is rebellious and easy-going.
- Megan Liu as Paige Li, a precocious child prodigy who has a higher IQ than Paxton's.
