The Conditions is a 2010 American Drama film written and directed by Terry Gilliam starring Brad Pitt, Luke Hemsworth, Max Irons, Amanda Seyfried, Josh Brolin, Sally Field and Michael Caine.
The film chronicles the son of a scrutinized homosexual man in a scrutinized homosexual relationship and the son's bizarre friendship with a schizophrenic girl.
The film explores controversial themes of violence, loss, death, homosexuality, racism and various other discriminations.
The film was released to phenomenal praise in pre-screenings and charity runs.
It received a wide theatrical release on July 12th, 2010 and was released on DVD and Blu-Ray format on January 2nd, 2011.
Nathaniel Barton (Max Irons) is a bullied boy and severe epileptic who from the film's sad prologue is beaten up for possessing a gay father and is called deregoratory names which relate to his father's sexuality.
Nathaniel works on a daily schedule of medication which incredibly hinders his attachment to reality and focus on reality, which in turn helps with the severe beatings he sustains.
His father Jullierd (Brad Pitt) concerned with the issue brings it forth with the Principal but discovers him to be a homophobic sheltering his son from persecution as his son is one of the bullies.
Nathaniel excels at English and Literature when he is able to concentrate and has his English & Literature professor Mr. Phelps (Michael Caine) emanoured of him.
Mr. Phelps comes to learn of Nathaniel's absenses from his classes being due to severe beatings covered up by the school's principal which sends Mr. Phelps into a rage who attacks the Principal severley and results in him being arrested for assault and battery.
Jullierd's boyfriend Bradley (Luke Hemsworth) is a prestigious lawyor despite his sexual orientation and comes to the defence of Mr. Roger Phelps.
He is able to get him a deal on parole, it is then revealed to Nathan that Mr. Phelps possessed a homosexual son who committed suicide by jumping in the path of a speeding train for he had been severley bullied because of his sexuality.
Bradley Barton tries hard to bond with Nathaniel but finds it difficult as Nathaniel is unwilling not due to his sexuality but because his mother had only tragically died two years ago and he believes his father converting to homosexuality is only a phase and warped way of dealing with her death.
Nathaniel however comes to change his ways and finds a reason to push forwards the way Mr. Phelps wanted him to as he meets a new student Jillian Armstrong (Amanda Seyfried) who severley beats him his usual attackers at a moment when they are about to advance him.
She is unable to get into trouble by the principal as it revealed she is a schizophrenic and her interlocking into a conventional educational environment is part of recovery of self control process.
Things take a turn for the worst however as one of the bullies' homophobic alcoholic father (Josh Brolin) sets out to personally get the Barton couple.
In the end tragically Nathan meets his demise by stepping in front of a bullet fired at his father's husband Bradley finally symbolizing his acceptance of him.
Jillian falls into severe depression and Mr. Phelps is released from prison to hear the tragic news himself.
Nathaniel who had been writing him everyday he was in prison comes to visit Jillian and comfort her at a street corner he and Nathaniel would meet at after-school, revising his outstanding stories.
He discovers Jillian is a talented writer herself and then begins to relay the same advice he had parted to Nathaniel.
