The Community Movie: Return to the Darkest Timeline (released in the US and UK as Community: Return to the Darkest Timeline and in some territories as simply The Community Movie) is a 2019 American comedy film based on the NBC sitcom Community, written by series creator Dan Harmon and directed by series producers Joe and Anthony Russo. It stars an ensemble of Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeoung, Chevy Chase and Jim Rash, all reprising their roles from the series.
Much like it's television counterpart, the film makes heavy use of meta-humor and pop culture references, frequently parodying film and television clichés and tropes.
The movie picks up on the recurring theme of 'multiple timelines', a concept created by character Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi) and is the first time the entire ensemble has appeared together since the show's fourth season. It marks the return of departed characters Pierce (Chevy Chase), Troy (Donald Glover) and Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown).
The film was green-lit by NBCUniversal in late 2018 and was released theatrically in September 2019 to mark the 10th anniversary of the show and fulfill the in-show prophecy and subsequent fan campaign of 'Six Seasons and a Movie'.
