Warner Bros. agreed to animated the 2003 characters. The film began production on September 2020, and was scheduled to be released on May 27, 2021, but due to the first trailer receiving negative reviews, Warner Bros. delayed the film to November 8, 2021 to redesign the Cat, Thing One, and Thing Two, whose animation designs drew some criticism. The second trailer revealing the new designs was met with mixed-to-positive responses.
Produced by Warner Animation Group in collaboration with The Animation Picture Company, The Cat In The Hat was released theatrically in the United States on November 8, 2021 by Warner Bros. Pictures, and grossed $313 million. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its animation, John Powell's musical score, and the performances of Black, Prince, and Keaton, but many compared it unfavorably to the 2003 film and criticized the adult-oriented humor, innuendos, and inconsistent tone.
A sequel, The Cat In The Hat 2, was released on January 5, 2025, which was generally considered an improvement over The Cat In The Hat.
