The film begins with a South California Desert Motel female manager and her daughter at night be attacked by two masked strangers (Chad Michael Murray & Ralph Fiennes) who gas them. We are then taken inside two of their dreams in which they murdered and die in real life. Four people come to the same Southern Californian Desert Motel and are after all coming into assembly in one Motel room are gased by two masked strangers. The gas renders all four onto the Motel's Master Bedroom bed asleep and comes from a gun like mechanical device which allows one to control another's subconsious through their sleep.

The two strangers go to unmask each other and we are taken into the dreams of each of the four victims of the bed. All but one is killed and all share the same Creepy Costume Bearer Man. The strangers are revealed as two brothers whose father created the invention to access one's mind through their dreams. After a square off, the psychotic one of the brothers is killed and the remorseful one flees the sole survivour Mrs. Elena Clearwater (Julia Roberts) discovers that the Motel had once belonged to their inventor father, that he had been originally a lawyor that served them all in their court cases and was the Creepy Costume Bearer Man from all their dreams.
