Revision as of 03:27, 1 September 2014

Super Crash Bros. 4 is the upcoming fourth game of the fanmade Super Crash Bros. series. It seems that this game is back to being 3DS exclusive unlike the second and the third SCB game. Not much is known about this game, as it's not released yet.

Gameplay

The game seems to be divided into different modes, with the one being showcased the most in the early trailer is the regular race mode, which pits you against 7 opponents unlike other 3DS incarnations of Super Crash Bros., which pit you against 5. In multiplayer mode, however, there can be only four racers at a time. The game seems to take cues from Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8, as there are certain tracks that involve airgliding and going through loop-de-loops using anti-gravity.

The controls for this game is rather simplified. To start the race, the player has to charge the slide launcher/Rainbow Boost Pad by swiping his/her stylus across the touch screen multiple times, all the while the 3-second timer counts down. The faster and more often you swiped, the farther the racer will be launched. All racers will accelerate on their own once the race starts, so there's no need to hold a button. There are two ways to steer, depending on your settings. You can either use the control pad or the gyroscope (tilting your 3DS). Braking can only be done while drifting.

This is the first game in SCB series where racing karts are upgradable, and any character can ride any kart (no more restrictions to kart color, weight, etc.). New karts can be obtained either by purchasing them in-game or simply input the code found in Super Crash Bros.-related toys. An advantage of using codes is that you can unlock a hidden character early.

Once again, Final Smash is back, and it can be used to your advantage as usual. Most of them involve damaging your opponents. To use the Final Smash, press the A button when the Final Smash gauge is full. The first use in a single race is free, but every other use after that costs you Crystals.

The game is notorious for limiting usage of characters due to the stamina/food gimmick. To simplify, a character usage (except for daily races and multiplayer's Challenge Mode) consumes a single food from their possession. A character can have five consumable foods at max. If it's empty, you cannot use that character again unless you pay some Crystals or switch to another character. When not in use, the character "recharges", which can take from a few minutes to several hours, depending on how much food he/she consumed.

Note: In this demo, all tracks listed above aren't categorized in any way. The actual game is supposed to divide the tracks into several different categories. In this build, there seems to be only four categories used.

Other info

  • All available karts are fully upgraded and usable for convenience. However, there are still some karts missing from this build: All track categories (not counting "Normal" and Ice) are missing one kart each, there's only one available kart in the "Normal"-type category, and there are no Ice-type karts because that category doesn't exist in the demo.
  • A character's health is represented with a HP count, with a max of 150 and gets reduced by 30 every time he/she is used for a race. However, for convenience, the HP count is ignored and all characters can be used as many times as the player can.
  • Final Smash usage is limited by how much "usage" the player has bought before starting the race.
  • There are three power-ups: Rainbow Boost Pad (replaces the slide launcher when used), Rayman's Service (raises kart's durability to max), and Galaga Booster (increases top speed, replaced by Speed Power-up in the final build). All power-ups can be applied before you start the race, which cost Smash Coins in this demo.
  • The only available on-track pick-ups are Smash Coins and Crystals.
  • The demo lacks other game modes (even multiplayer). The only other game mode available is Crash Run, which can be run without the use of a code in this build.
  • There are no Challenge Race and Pass Through Gates modes, as unlockable characters aren't implemented in the demo and Ice-type track category isn't available, respectively.
  • All characters' Final Smash icon is the same, which is the Smash symbol.
  • During the race "preview", you cannot see any little info tidbit on all racers, including yours.

Game modes

Single player

These modes are located in every track you chose. Ice-type category has a little bit variety, however.

  • Regular Race: Race against 7 opponents to the finish line. Place in top 3 to succeed.
  • Timed Race: Race on your own against the clock. You have to reach the finish line before the timer runs out.
  • Versus: Race against a random character. You can pick one of the three difficulty levels. The higher the difficulty, the better the prize.
  • Break the Targets: Destroy a certain number of targets before you reach the finish line.
  • Challenge Race: Race against an unlockable character. Win against him/her 5 times to recruit him/her. This mode becomes unavailable in a track once the character associated with the track has been beaten.
  • Pass Through Gates: Pass through the gates while keeping your eye on the time limit. Missing a gate will give you a time penalty and several explosive crates.

Multiplayer

  • Regular Race: Race against 3 randomly-chosen real-life opponents from around the world. Every 5 wins, the player who reached that amount will get a random prize.
  • Challenge Mode: Can only be accessed if you're connected to the internet. Compete against your friends registered in your Friend List in a set of 5 races of randomly-chosen mode, track and character. The one who reaches the highest score after a week has passed (this is a weekly event) will obtain prizes. Second- and third-placers can still obtain prizes, though not as good as the first-placer.

Other

  • Crash Run: A single-player mode where the objective is to cause as much destruction as possible and eliminate all the enemies on a fragile structure. Only playable if you input a one-use code available on "Crash Run"-specific SCB toys.
  • Daily Race: A daily event. Race against a random character in a random kart (depending on track type) and on a random track to earn a daily prize of Smash Coins or Crystals. The more often you participate, the better the prize. Can only be accessed if you're connected to the internet.

Pick-ups

In Super Crash Bros. 4, it is notable that one track can have four kinds of pick-ups. There are no power-up pick-ups in this game, as power-ups are set up before you start your race and your only way of attacking aside from slamming into other racers is the Final Smash.

  • Smash Coin: The main currency of the game. Can also be earned after finishing races, from gifts or from buying them using Crystals. (common)
  • Crystal: The secondary currency of the game. Usually appears from 1-3 Crystals in a single track. Can also be earned after finishing certain events, from gifts or from buying them using Play Coins. (rare)
  • Party Ball: You won't know what's inside this item until you finish the race. Prizes vary from bonus Smash Coins to an unlockable kart (if you haven't gotten it yet). (very rare)

Power-ups

These power-ups are set up before you actually begin the race. Their effects only last for that one race, so if you happen to restart the race, you have to use up the power-ups again. When you first start the game, you're given a limited number of power-ups. If you run out of a certain power-up, you can still use it, if you're willing to pay some Crystals. Free power-ups can be gained from gifts like picked-up Party Balls and Multiplayer Mode prize.

  • Rainbow Boost Pad: Replaces the slide launcher when used. This allows your racer to be launched twice the distance than the slide launcher.
  • Rayman's Service: Raises your kart's durability to maximum.
  • Speed Power-up: Raises your kart's top speed.
