2024 FANON WIKI AWARD NOMINEE! |
Sunsets (stylized in all lowercase) is the fifth studio album by American singer Peyton List, released on August 16, 2024, via Interscope Records. It was written and recorded with List working closely alongside Patrick Wimberly. Inspired largely by R&B music from decades past, List conceived Sunsets hoping to reflect the process of maturity and sobriety she experienced toward the release of her previous album, The Blues. Primarily, the album touches themes such as List’s romantic endeavors, and personal trials and tribulations. Though primarily a pop and R&B record, the album also incorporates folk, indie rock, and electronica music. The sound of the project was described as "a varied palette", combining pop rock and grunge elements, alongside "moody lo-fi beats".
The album was preceded by three singles released throughout 2024—"Easy" on January 5, followed by "Fool Me Twice" on May 3, and "Homewrecker" featuring Canadian singer Tate McRae on August 9. "Easy" became List’s highest charting single on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart as a solo artist, peaking at number two and being List’s second song to peak at the runner up spot, whereas "Fool Me Twice" reached a peak of number 14, and "Homewrecker" charted at number three. Sunsets was reissued on December 6, 2024 as Sunsets: After Hours Edition, featuring ten tracks recorded for the album that had leaked online days prior, with List saying she "had no intention of releasing them". A further seven songs, all of which were previously featured exclusively on physicals releases of the album, were released to streaming and digital download services on January 3, 2025 as Sunsets: Twilight Edition. The new version also featured a previously unheard song, entitled "Fateful Night", which was serviced to US pop radio and debuted at number nine on the Hot 100 chart.
Commercially, Sunsets topped the album charts in 12 countries, including the United States, Australia, Canada, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. In its US debut, it charted seven of its songs on the Billboard Hot 100. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart dated September 7, 2024 with 200,000 equivalent album units earned (comprising of 73,000 pure sales and 126,000 stream-equivalent sales, resulting from 157.63 million on demand streams).
Release and promotion[]
Sunsets was released on August 16, 2024 via CD, cassette, and streaming platforms, as well as a box set edition. Preorders for the album began on May 3, 2024. Vinyl LPs, in various colored variants, were also released, each of which were exclusively available at List’s webstore, Urban Outfitters, Walmart, Amazon, or Hot Topic. An exclusive CD and vinyl edition of Sunsets was made available through Target, featuring an alternate cover and one bonus song was also available upon release. On August 21, 2024, List released Sunsets II and Sunsets III to her webstore, each featuring alternate cover artwork and a cover of a track by Brook Benton and Otis Redding, respectively. The two webstore exclusive editions have retrospectively been considered precursors to the sound of List’s sixth studio album, XOXO. Sunsets was reissued on December 6, 2024, as Sunsets: After Hours Edition. The new version of the album featured ten songs that had previously leaked online roughly two days prior, and featured alternate cover artwork.
Singles[]
"Easy" was released on January 5, 2024. Intended as a standalone single, the song was praised for its "lush instrumentation, which is a match made in heaven with List’s appropriately wistful vocal delivery". Following its official release, "Easy" debuted at number one on the US Spotify charts and eventually opened at number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100, marking her seventh top ten single. The following week, due to a surge in popularity on the video-sharing application TikTok, the song reached its peak position of number two. A close contender for the summit, List released a number of List performed the song at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 4, 2024, as part of a medley with "Grace", and again on Saturday Night Live on May 11, 2024 alongside the second single, "Fool Me Twice".
"Fool Me Twice" was released on May 3, 2024 alongside the album being made available for pre-order. The song debuted and peaked at number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
"Homewrecker" featuring Tate McRae was released on August 9, 2024. The song debuted at number 18 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and peaked at number three the following week, due to the release of Sunsets.
