#1 - "New Fire, New Blood"
A few months after the backdoor pilot, the personnel of Station 40 are moving forward with their lives as they cope with the loss of firefighter Jerry Sorenson. Dunnigan drops his son Trevor Jr. back home while his second wife Andrea holds their daughter Maddie. Rossi drops his two children of at his ex-wife Danica's (A.J. Cook) house. Keating and his Ukrainian-born wife Katya (Mila Kunis) pick up their children from school. Griggs says goodbye to his wife Naomi (Tracie Thoms) and their four children. Grace checks on the diabetic levels on her son Josh, which are normal so far. Her husband Dennis (Scott Foley) assures her that their son is okay, and she heads for work after saying goodbye to her family. At Station 40, Peter arrives as his white girlfriend, Aurora Clark (Elle Fanning), drops him off. As everyone arrives for work, Richards and Vest speak to Sorenson's wife Donna (Amber Tamblyn) at the memorial wall where her husband's plaque is displayed along with those of other fallen Station 40 members as they console her. Richards instructs Keating to shave the long beard he has grown due to taking some time off to help Katya with her father, who has been hospitalized out of state following a heart attack. Just as Donna leaves, Fire Candidate Raj Sydnor arrives and Richards and the others greet him. As Guevara gives Raj a locker, Griggs wondered where Lila is and Clayton replies that she is at home since her water heater died and plumbers are replacing it.
At her house, Lila observes the plumbers finishing replacing her water heater and testing it, and pays them for their service. As the plumbers are about to leave, everyone heard a sound of a loud boom and Lila goes out to her backyard and sees an explosion. At the Station 40, just as Keating finishes shaving, the alarm bell sounds and the station responds to the explosion. Lila rushes to the scene and finds two houses on fire. She helps the family in the first house evacuate. The father says the explosion came from his neighbor's propane gas grill and he's not sure how it happened. The mother says that a family of five lives in the second house. As Engine 40, Truck 40, Rescue 3, and Ambulance 15 arrive, Lila enters the second house. Griggs goes in to help with fellow Rescue 3 members Dwight "Brix" Brixton, Wolfe King, and Max McGee, while Engine 40 works on extinguishing the fire and Truck 40 works on getting access to the house's second floor. As Richards arrives on the scene and took charge, Guevara, Raj and fellow Truck 40 member Tim Malloy find the father and his oldest daughter who were outside when the explosion happened and received some injuries and burns from the force of the explosion. The father informs them the propane tank ruptured due to a leak in the pipe of the grill and the leaking gas made contact with the flame which triggered the explosion. They bring the two to Peter and Clayton, who tend to them. The husband then tells them his wife and other two other children are inside. As Keating, Grace and other Truck 40 member Edward "Ed" Rhee break through the second floor window, Lila and King find one of the children, the middle son, in the kitchen and bring him out. As Rossi, Dunnigan, Vest and fellow Engine 40 members Troy Meier, Clarence Young and Kent Asher extinguish the flames on the first house, Griggs finds the wife in the smoke-filled dining room and has Brix take her out through the front door. Keating, Grace and Rhee continue searching for the last child in the second floor through the dense smoke. They find the youngest son in his parents' bedroom under their bed, and it starts to heat up. Keating and Grace take him with Rhee leading the way, and Griggs and McGee meet with them. Then the flames on the ceiling start to rapidly spread into an inferno. Upon seeing this flames reaches on the roof, Richards order the house evacuated now. As Keating and Grace get the boy downstairs, Griggs, Rhee and McGee break through the window in the living room as time was up the essence. Keating and Grace got the boy through it, then jump out just as the entire house is engulfed in flames. Peter, Clayton and other paramedics who have arrived on scene tend to the family.
At Denver Memorial, as the family is being treated, Peter and Clayton stop by and pick up some more supplies for the ambulance. Clayton says that she heard that Raj's father was a firefighter who died in the line of duty when he was 10. Peter say that some people follow the family genes, including being firefighters, football players, military, and such. Clayton reveals that her father Earl was a firefighter and he worked alongside Richards, Vest and Guevara before he retired. Peter suspects she became a paramedic because of her father. She corrects him, revealing she initially wanted to be a doctor, but dropped out of medical school after an incident between her and a fellow student. So she switched gears and became a paramedic in the same firehouse Earl worked in. As Peter says being a medic means being on the front lines of medicine, they get called in for a child who has been got run over by a car.
Peter and Clayton arrive and sees the boy's mother and neighbors tending to him. As they took over, Clayton asks what happened. The distraught mother, Kelly Drew, confesses that she accidentally ran over her son, Ron, as she was leaving for work. Ron rushed out, wanting to hug his mother, as he loves his hugs and she accidentally rear-ended him as she didn't see him. Clayton and Peter assess Ron and finds he has trauma in his chest and possibly a collapsed lung and internal bleeding as well. They are able to stabilize him and loaded him to the ambulance. With Peter driving and Kelly riding with them, Clayton works to ensure Ron makes it to Denver Memorial. When they reached the hospital, Peter and Clayton quickly roll Ron in as Boyle, Kira and others tend to the boy. With him in the doctors hands now, Peter and Clayton return to Station 40.
As everyone settles in at the station, Richards and Keating speak to Raj. Raj says that he wanted to be a firefighter like his father was noting that he looked up to the man for years, and he reveals that Vest knew him too. Vest confirms that he knew James Sydnor since they went to the academy and served in different firehouses. James was killed in a gas station fire/explosion trying to get people out of the station. Raj says that he heard about Sorenson and expresses his condolences. Griggs says that Sorenson's widow Donna and her three children are still grieving over the tragedy. Raj sympathizes with the family since he, his mother, and his two younger sisters endured that pain when James died. Keating tells him he and the others will make sure he becomes as great a firefighter like his father was. Rossi sees Ambulance 15 returning and asks how the boy is doing. Peter says that Ron is in surgery right now, and Rossi acknowledges this in relief.
Later, as everyone eats lunch and are watching a Colorado Rockies game, an alarm bell sounds, as the dispatcher reveals that four people are trapped in an elevator that has broken down. Truck 40 and Rescue 3 respond to the scene. As they arrive at an office building, the security manager reveals the elevator stopped between the 9th and 10th floor due to a malfunction in the mechanisms on top. Guevara inspects the mechanism and sees the cable is caught and is and it's becoming unsteady. He warns Keating and Griggs about this, and they inform everyone that they are on a ticking clock. Keating and Griggs, along with Brix and Malloy, pry the outer elevator doors open on the 10th floor. Griggs assesses the elevator and finds the cable is on the verge of breaking and the brakes on the elevator won't save the people inside. Grace says that with four people in the elevator, the weight of it is not exactly favorable. Lila warns them that one of the people trapped the elevator is pregnant and is having contractions. Griggs says that they will have to get them out from the 9th floor. With that in mind, Keating as Raj watch as he, Guevara and Rhee pry the elevator car door on the 9th floor. Griggs, Lila, Brix and King manage to pry the outer elevator on the 9th floor open, just Keating and the others got the inner elevator door open. They warn everyone in the elevator to move slowly to get out to avoid the car giving way and crashing at the bottom of the shaft. One of the people announces that his pregnant co-worker is going to labor. As two of the people slowly get out of the car, Lila convinces the woman attending to her pregnant co-worker to leave too so they can tend to her. After that woman leaves, Grace and Lila get in and quickly remove the pregnant woman, Linda Sinclair, in spite her painful contractions. With Grace's knowledge of having given birth to three children, she, Lila and Griggs eventually help Linda deliver a baby girl just as paramedics and Linda's husband arrive. They thank the firefighters, especially Grace, for helping born their daughter, naming her Judy Grace Sinclair. Grace was moved by them using her name as their daughter's middle name as paramedics rolled her out to take her and baby Judy to the hospital.
As everyone returned to the station, the others inside applaud them for their jobs, especially Grace for helping in a child's birth. Griggs reveals that he called the hospital and informs them that Linda and Judy are both doing fine. Raj tells Grace that she did pretty good; she replies that she was trained as an EMT prior to undergoing firefighter training and having three kids helped her to talk Linda through the birthing process. Later, at the grocery store, Rossi, Dunnigan and Vest are shopping for food for the firehouse. As they were leaving with said food, Dunnigan and Vest talk about how Sorenson always got his favorite foods while on duty. Rossi says that they should check in with Donna after their shift is over and Dunnigan and Vest agree.
Later at night, everyone is asleep in the bunk rooms or private offices. Then the alarm sounds with the dispatcher revealing that there's a multi-vehicle pile up on the I-70. Everyone heads to the scene and wind up finding a 16-car pile-up. With Richards taking command, all firefighters and paramedics on the scene get to work to free the trapped people and extinguish any flames. Griggs, Lila and others free a family of three on a overturned van using their rescue equipment, and Peter and Clayton tend to them. Rossi, Dunnigan, Vest and the others rescue a man who hit the Jersey barrier. Keating, Grace, Guevara, Raj and others use their Jaws of Life to free a woman pinned in her car. Then a car explodes, setting the driver on fire. Dunnigan quickly rushes in, pulls him out of the vehicle and rolls him around the ground as Rossi and Vest spray him with extinguishers. Meier and Young help bring him to Peter and Clayton. Guevara finds another driver of a sedan highly intoxicated and realizes he's the one who caused the pile-up. Raj sees a boy yelling for help with his trapped mother and he rushes over to help. Seeing the mother crammed inside their pickup truck, he yells for help. Richards and Griggs, with Brix and McGee, rush over and help Raj free her, much to the boy's relief. Keating and Guevara bring the drunk driver out and the woman points that he caused the accident, which Guevara confirms it. Grace helps a woman whose husband was killed in accident and convinces that her children need her to get through their father's death. With that, Grace is able to get her out. The final casualty count is six dead, eight have moderate to severe injuries and seven had receive mild injuries, with the drunk driver being turned over to the police. After the rescue operation, Raj feels enjoyment of rescuing whatever people they can. Richards and Keating say that it is the best part of the job, but it can also be the worst when faced with the ones that couldn't be saved.
In the morning, with their shift over, everyone returns home as the next shift comes in. Richards returns home to her husband Caleb (Simon Baker) and their three children. Grace reunites with her family. Dunnigan goes home to Andrea and their children. Keating met with Katya and their children at Amanda's for breakfast. Rossi and Vest check on Donna and her children at her home and give some extra groceries they bought. Griggs arrives on time to have breakfast with Naomi and their children at church. Lila returns home and takes a much-needed shower now that her water heater is replaced. And Peter returns to his new condo and reunites with Aurora.
#2 - "Sky High Fire"
At Station 40, Danica drops Rossi off at the firehouse since his car is being serviced and his father Edward (John Doman) will stop by to help him pick it up. Danica reminds him about how things are between his divorced parents, after which Rossi thanks her for dropping him off. As everyone gathers in the briefing room, Richards informs everyone that DFD Chief Madelyn Mullen (Wendy Crewson) will stop by later to discuss the response times from each firehouse and she wants to see results from them. Shortly after the briefing finishes, the alarm rings, indicating a four alarm fire in a condominium. Everyone gets dressed, rushes to their vehicles and take off for the fire.
As the team first arrives at the 10-story condominium, they see the eighth floor is smoking and blazing. Then firetrucks and ambulances from three different stations, Station 1, Station 8 and Station 9 arrive to help, along with rescue units from different stations. The head of security tells Richards that the eighth floor is hot and filled with smoke, the flames all over the eighth floor are advancing to the seventh and ninth floors, and the elevator shaft is also in flames and the cars are coming down. He also says that there are still people trapped on the eighth and ninth floors. Then an explosion is heard in the elevator shaft as the elevator car drops down to the basement, where it explodes, engulfing the shaft in more fire. After learning this, Richards takes command. A frantic father rushes inside the lobby, telling Richards and the others that his two children and their friends are in the basement; Keating assures him that they will get to them. Richards sends Truck 40 to the basement, along with other truck companies, to get to the children. She also sends Rescue 3 and other rescue units to the top floors to find trapped people and Engine 40 and other engine companies to extinguish the fires and search and rescue if needed. As members of Engine 40 go to put out the fires on the seventh floor, Rescue 3 goes to search for people on the eighth floor, while other Rescue units search the ninth floor. Truck 40 arrives at the basement door, but finds it blocked by falling debris cause by the explosion.
Lila finds a couple inside one place trapped by the smoke, and leads to the stairway. Griggs finds an open hole on the floor that leads to the seventh floor, before having Brix and King check the next room. Then he hears an elderly man screaming for help from the other side of the hole. As Lila and McGee arrive, Griggs tells them to get a ladder down in the hole. Despite protests from Lila and McGee, Griggs jumps over the hole and stabs the floor with the axe so he wouldn't fall through the hole. As he climbs up using the axe, he searches for the elderly man and finds him. With help from Rescue 3 and others, Griggs takes the elderly man down through the hole as other firefighters bring him down to safety. Meanwhile, in the basement, Truck 40, with help from one of the truck companies, cuts through the door and pushes the rubble out of the way. They began searching the area for the children. Elsewhere, Rossi, with Dunnigan, Vest and others from Engine 40, extinguish the fires on the empty seventh floor. Then Dunnigan and Vest look at the elevator control room and finds the room is corroded and melted. Dunnigan finds that the control panels have been tampered with and Vest sees that the ventilation shafts also smell like gasoline; they realize from this that the fire is the result of arson. Dunnigan informs Richards over the radio about their findings; Richards tell him to focus on the fires first and any survivors they can find. Then as they left the room, Rossi spots two people coming towards them as they are being evacuated from the eighth floor. He and Dunnigan instruct them to take the stairway to the lobby.
At the basement, Truck 40 and others search for the missing children. Guevara finds two of them in a back of a pickup truck and gathers them to a safe area. Meanwhile, Grace finds a crawlspace. She opens it, finds a girl alone inside, and gently coaxes her out. Raj sees that a part of the ceiling is going to collapse and yells out to everyone. As everyone clears out, Keating and Rhee quickly grab two boys and pull them out of the way, as the ceiling collapses, filling the basement with rubble. Grace is on other side of the rubble with the girl she found, Helen Mauro. They find a small opening in the rubble and crawl through it. The other firefighters find three other children, one of them Helen's brother Tucker. Back on the eighth floor, Griggs and the others from Rescue 3 continue to search the area for survivors. Hearing a mother and daughter screaming for help in a room that is engulfed into flames, Griggs rushes in, despite the risks. After a moment, Lila reluctantly follows him in the room. They find the mother and daughter inside a bedroom, but their path out is blocked by flames. Lila breaks the bedroom window and Griggs shouts down to Richards that they need a truck to get two people out. As firefighters of Truck 9 reposition the ladder to them, Griggs and Lila help the mother and daughter down the ladder, then head down themselves. As this goes on, Peter and Clayton are assessing victims on the scene.
Meanwhile, Truck 40 and others bring the children out of the building and Tucker and Helen reunite with their father. Engine 40 also makes it out with three more people as the others continue to contain the fire. Richard instructs Rossi and most of Engine 40 to continue to help putting out the fires while having Dunnigan fill her in about his and Vest's findings. After learning about the evidence they found on scene, Richards feels that someone wanted to destroy the condominium or at least render it uninhabitable based on what happened in the ventilation and elevator shafts. Dunnigan theorizes that the arsonist tried to take out many people as possible with the smoke, the flames in the elevator shaft, and the vents. Once everyone returns to the station, Rossi announces the causality count: five people are dead from the eighth and ninth floors, ten got burned, and over 40 people have smoke inhalation. Richards announces good work to everyone in the station. Rossi's father Edward, a former FBI agent, arrives to pick up his son, informing that his car ready for pickup.
As everyone relaxes after such long work in the condominium fire, Chief Mullen arrives. She informs Richards that she heard about the fire at the condominium. After Richards reveals the cause of the fire and that Dunnigan is helping arson investigators, Mullen says that they have to find the arsonist because what happened over there could happen elsewhere. Then she gets right to the point about their meeting about the station's response times to emergencies. Richards tells Mullen that Station 40's record speaks for itself as they are within the Top 5 in the department. Mullen agrees that they are ranked 4th best in response times in emergencies and that they should try to get further ahead because they are one of the busiest firehouses in Denver. Richards says that they respond as quick as possible when a call comes in. Mullen says that they got a very good satisfaction rating from the public and it should stay that way. Richards acknowledges that. As that was happening, Aurora arrives, asking Peter for his help with something important. She asks him to help cater her young niece's 6th birthday party, which he agrees to do.
As Edward drives Rossi to the car service shop, he tells him that his mother, Mariana Rubin (Bonnie Bedelia), a retired city councilwoman, is at the car shop too, which displeases Rossi giving how things are between his divorced parents. Once they arrive, Rossi greets his mother, but tells her not to make a scene with Edward. Mariana says that she paid for the service of his car, but Edward says that he had it covered until she barged in. Mariana bluntly says that he has his own problems to worry about and a verbal showdown started between them, forcing Rossi to get in between his parents. He says that that their marital problems started when he was a kid and their divorce got ugly because they were both having affairs due to how bad things were between them. He tells them to put their issues aside and stop dragging him into their feud as he leaves with his now-fixed car.
Afterwards, Richards confronts Griggs for his unorthodox methods in the condominium fire. He justifies that the mother and her daughter, as well as the elderly man would've died if he hadn't done what he did and he made the right calls to save those people, despite the risks. Richards reminds him that one of these days, his risk-taking will endanger himself and anyone else with them. Griggs tells her that part of firefighting, especially being on a rescue squad, is about taking risks, and Lila jumped in to help him with the mother and her daughter on her own free will. Richards states that Lila did so out to help trapped people and out of her own loyalty to him. Griggs says that she still made her choice to come to his aid, no matter what. Richards tells him he got lucky this time, but states that one of these days, it will eventually come back to bite him.
At the end, Dunnigan goes over the evidence of the condominium fire. Rossi returns home with his now-fixed car, feeling frustrated by his parents going at it against each other. Griggs works out on in the firehouse gym as Richards looks at him before heading home. Lila stares at him too before deciding to go to the the gym's boxing bag to work out. Grace and Guevara help clean Truck 40 as Keating looks on. Peter and Aurora celebrate her niece's birthday with Aurora providing the food. And Raj returns home to his mother and heads inside.
#3 - "Hard Rain"
As a massive rainstorm causes a downpour in Denver, Richards informs everyone that there may be some flooding that might occur in few areas in Denver and warns them to be mindful while driving in certain flooded areas. Dunnigan continues his investigation in the condominium fire with the Fire Investigation Unit, headed by Gordon Jessup. They believe that someone wanted to make that condominium inhabitable at best and destroyed it at worst by setting fire to the down the vests and the shafts. As Dunnigan returns to Station 40, the dispatcher announces that there's a child in diabetic shock at Grace's home address, making her realize her son Josh is the victim. Truck 40 and Ambulance 15 respond, and when they arrive, Grace immediately rushes in and is shocked to see Josh's condition. Dennis told her that he knew something was wrong with Josh when his blood sugar spiked after by Laura in an attempt to stop her seizure; Grace understands as she works feverish to help Josh as Peter and Clayton arrive. The two administer insulin, and they load him to the ambulance. As they arrive in Denver Memorial, Kira continues treatment and Josh's condition improves, much to the relief of Grace and the rest of her family.
As Dennis stays with Josh, Grace and everyone returns to the station. Grace is still visibly shaken up by Josh's diabetic shock. Richards suggests that she should take the rest of the shift off, but Grace says that she will take the next shift off. Then the alarm bells sounds, indicating that a mini-mall is flooding and people are trapped in it. Engine 40, Truck 40, Rescue 3 and Ambulance 15, as well as AC 26, all respond to the scene. As everybody droves towards the mall, they find the roads are flooded. They stop nearby and they bring out rubber rafts to get to the waters. When they arrive at the mall, they find most places have flooded. Richards tells everyone to patrol the mall to find any trapped people. As everyone checks out the area, Dunnigan and Rossi find two people trapped in a dental office. As they get closer to it, Dunnigan and Meier dive in and help the two trapped people, also bringing them life vests. Elsewhere, Guevara finds three people trapped in a pizzeria, and Keating sends Grace, Guevara and Rhee in. At a flooded farming and ranch supply store, Griggs and Lila see people trapped; they, along with McGee, go into the store to help anyone in there. After Dunnigan and Meier bring the two people to their raft, Rossi and the others take them to safety and Peter and Clayton check them out. Grace and Rhee bring two more people, while Guevara finds two other people drowned and brings a surviving third one over to their raft. At the farm store, Griggs, Lila and McGee manage to find trapped people who are clinging to anything that floats inside. Griggs and McGee find two inflatable rafts inside packages and the former has an idea. As Lila and McGee help the people out of the water, Griggs uses an air pump to inflate the rafts. Now with more rafts, the firefighters work to find more survivors. Keating finds two people trapped in the nearby Dairy Queen; he and Malloy come to their aid and are able to get them. Suddenly, Raj spots a toddler boy being swept by the currents of the flood. Seeing no other firefighter nearby, he dives in to save the boy; he is able to get him, but continues being pulled along by the currents as he kept the child above the water. Richards, Rossi, Vest and Young come to their aid and get them both in the raft. They bring the toddler to Peter and Clayton as more ambulances and firetrucks arrive to assist. As more rescuers came to save more people in the mall, they are to get many people out of the flood mall as they can, but also find some people have drowned.
As everyone returns to the station, they all dry themselves off. Grace says that Josh is improving and she should go see him. Richards tells her to go to Denver Memorial and be with her family, citing that she's done all she can for the flood victims at the mall. As Grace heads out, everyone is drying off their vehicles from the downpour. Then Peter and Clayton are called up, with dispatch citing an elderly man having chest pains outside of his home. As they arrive, Peter finds that the man has collapsed and realizes he was in cardiac arrest. His daughter, who had called them, says he had a heart attack nine years before and he recovered from it, but was told to take things easy. He was trying to protect their house from flooding when he started having chest pains. After Clayton defibrillates him twice, he regains his pulse and woke up. She and Peter then immediately take him to Denver Memorial.
As this is happening, Richards calls Donna to check in on her; Donna replies that she and her children are not in the flood zone. Richards warns them to be weary if case of flooding that does occur around the area, which Donna acknowledges. She then states that she wishes Jerry was around to help them out with the flood situation. Richards assures her that she and everyone in Station 40 are helping her and her children in any way that they can. Donna somberly acknowledges this, noting that she has to go and be there for her kids before hanging up. At night, as the storm ends, the water starts to rescind. Grace is at the hospital at Josh's bedside and says that he is starting to feel better. As Dunnigan goes over the evidence on the condominium arson, he believes that someone with knowledge of the building may have set it. Jessup says it will take some time to narrow down the list. Dunnigan hopes that there won't be any other arsons after it.
At the end, Dunnigan returns home to Andrea and the rest of their family. Grace reads a story to the Josh at the hospital, while Raj receives some praise for his bravery in saving the toddler from the floodwaters. Keating and Rossi play chess at the firehouse, and Richards looks at the view of the city from the driveway of the firehouse.
#4 - "Such Shoddy Workmanship"
Days after the flood, things have returned to normal. Dunnigan tells Richards about his findings at the condominium fire; he notes that whoever set the fire had to be someone who had access to the building and knew where the vents go. As everyone eats breakfast, Grace says that Josh has improved and is back home, now with a device that will monitor his blood sugar levels. Keating and Griggs tell Grace that she is a good mother, and she admits that being a firefighter and a mother to three kids is a difficult balance. Keating and Griggs agrees on the balance since they are both fathers; Grace, however, says that being a mother has a slight difference when you're a firefighter. Peter says that his mother worked as a medical examiner and she worked often while his father was overseas and he & his older siblings had to deal with that at times. Grace says that she has wanted to be a firefighter since she was a child and she got her wish, despite having to deal with a lot of toxic masculinity when she first joined the department; being married and having children was something she never thought it would happen, and she ultimately is glad she has a family. Keating says having a family is best thing for anyone. Then Peter and Clayton were called in to respond to a child swallowing a moth ball.
Peter and Clayton arrive in the house where the frantic father reveals that his toddler son swallowed a moth ball, thinking it was candy. Peter and Clayton tend to the boy. The quickly treat him with activated charcoal to prevent the chemicals from getting into the digestive system and put him on oxygen before rushing him to the hospital. Later, when Peter and Clayton return to the station, they tell Rossi and Vest that the boy is touch-and-go at this time. Just as they are settling in, Katya comes to the firehouse and informs her husband that their neighbor Arthur Gilbert, who is bigoted towards Jews, is harassing her again because of her Jewish Ukrainian heritage. Keating is angered by this and responds that he's going to deal with Gilbert soon. Then the alarm bells ring and the dispatcher notifies that a construction accident has buried three workers alive. With that, everyone heads out as Keating goes to get his kids and bring them to Donna's home for temporary babysitting, which she has agreed to do.
All teams arrive at the construction site; the foreman tells Griggs that a cement mixer accidentally drove into an incomplete scaffolding and it sealed the tube with three of his workers trapped inside. Richards has Truck 40 and Rescue 3 to work on extrication to clear the path and has Engine 40 try and find out if there's another way to get to the workers. As Keating, Griggs and the rest of the team work to remove the debris to free the workers, Lila speaks to them through the hole and one of them reveals that one of his co-workers is injured. Rossi and the rest of Engine 40 find no other way and joined the others to free the workers. One worker secretly reveals to Lila that the company has been cut corners to reduce costs and still get their building finished in time, and where he has hidden the evidence. As everyone works to remove the debris to free the workers, Vest notices that the building material above them is unstable. Griggs, with Richards and Brix guiding him, uses a tractor bucket to steady the material above them to prevent them from falling while Keating, with help from Grace and Rhee guiding him, uses a crane to get close to the area. Then Dunnigan, Rossi, Vest, Grace, Rhee, Malloy, Meier and Young help wrap the crane's cables around the area to keep them in place, securing the area. After a long extrication period, they are able to get an opening. As one worker escapes, Griggs, along with Lila, Brix, King and McGee enter and secure the injured worker. As the second worker escapes, Griggs and the other were able to get the injured worker out where Peter and Clayton treat him. Lila finds the evidence and secretly sends it to the media.
As everyone returns to the station, Dunnigan gets a call from his mother Gloria, who lives in a nursing home due to immobility. Gloria informs Dunnigan that his brother Matt (Matt Lauria) is about to be released from jail today and asks him to pick him up; Dunnigan reluctantly agrees. As Dunnigan heads out to pick up Matt, a woman came in and Lila recognizes her as her ex-lover, Carrie Epstein (Sprague Grayden), a lawyer. Epstein confronts Lila about leaking classified information to the press about the building-in-progress. Lila, realizing that Epstein is representing the people who cut corners on the unsafe building, defends herself that the people on the construction site are committing unsafe construction practices and now everybody knows the truth. Epstein says that the company's owners are suing her for slander and industrial espionage and she will be there to bring her down as she leaves. Griggs and Richards ask Lila what is going on and she reveals the company who owns the site is suing her for slander because she leaked evidence of the building's unsafe construction practices to the press. She reveals that Epstein also has had it out for her since, back when they were lovers, she asked her to commit perjury on the arson case which involved her rich client who burned down a house that badly burned a couple. But she refused to do so and testified against Epstein's client instead, which publicly embarrassed her and led to their breakup. Richards tells Lila to talk to Guevara for legal advice.
Meanwhile, Keating and Katya return to their neighborhood and confront Gilbert. Keating warns the man that he has a co-worker whose wife is a cop with serious connections, and threatens to involve the police on him if he continues to harass Katya and their children over their Ukrainian Jewish background. They affirm their warning to Gilbert that he is to leave them alone or face the police and the rest of the Jewish community, who will no doubt give him a very bad time. With that threat, Gilbert submits, and both Keating and Katya leave satisfied. Elsewhere, Dunnigan picks up his brother Matt from jail; Matt is happy to have freedom again. Dunnigan, however, warns his brother that if he's gonna stay with them temporarily, it's not gonna be a free ride, and there will be some ground rules. Matt acknowledges this as they get into the car. Back in Station 40, Guevara provides Lila some legal advice about her situation; he notes that she should get an attorney she can trust and build a case in her favor, citing that if she can prove the allegations true then it won't be considered slander. Richards returns home to her family, where Caleb and their three children, 19-year-old Brock, a college football player at Colorado State University, 17-year-old Dana and 14-year-old Charlie. Charlie tells his mother that he needs a ride to Denver International Airport in three days since he has a science fair in Houston since his father is busy on an R&D assignment that day. Richards says he'll drop him off the morning at that time.
At the end, Lila is at home, feeling a little upset about the pending lawsuit against her, Keating and Katya play with their children at their home, Grace returns home and spends time with her family, Rossi and Vest dine at Amanda's with Griggs, Raj, Peter and Aurora, Richards settles down with her family and Dunnigan brings Matt to his place where Andrea warns him of the ground rules, which he accepts as they welcome him in.
#5 - "Shots Fired"
In the morning, Dunnigan finds Matt in his kitchen cooking some French Toast for breakfast. Matt notes that he still is a good cook and that he even cooked in jail. Dunnigan tells his brother that cooking is the only thing he's ever been good at. Trevor and Piper come in for breakfast and greet the two. Andrea, while holding Maddie in her arms also enters; she warns Matt that he is not to gamble while he stays with them, especially with their money, due to his past history of gambling. Matt acknowledges this, admitting he committed a theft to pay off his gambling debts, which is what landed him in prison to begin with. Andrea says that she knows about his history and how her husband has had to deal with him. Dunnigan also reminds him that the only reason he is saying with them because he is family, and that their mother wants to ensure that he stay on the right path after his release. Matt notes this and tells them that breakfast is all ready for them. Later, as Dunnigan arrives in the station, Richards notices his mood and asks what the problem is. He reveals that his brother is out of jail and staying with him and his family. Richards, having heard of Matt's history of run-ins with the law, asks about how his family handling it; he responds that Andrea is strict when it comes to him since she is a cop. Richards gently reminds him about Matt's history of getting in trouble. Dunnigan says that he wants to ensure Matt flies right this time, but he knows that trouble can find him at the worst times. Rossi comes in and reminds Dunnigan that try as he might, he can't always keep Matt in check.
Later, after everyone finishes roll call and settles in, Guevara asks Lila if she's hired a lawyer yet. She asks him if his father Jorge (Luis Guzman) is available and Felix replies that he is. Seconds afterwards, the alarm bell sounds and dispatch reveals that they've got a fire in a gun and ammo store and people are trapped inside. The dispatcher also warns them of there being live ammunition on the scene. Station 40 responds to the scene and finds the gun store is smoking and flames are coming from the back of the building. Richards and Griggs warn everyone to proceed with extreme caution. Griggs, Lila and the rest of Rescue 3 go in through the side while Keating and Truck 40 go in through the front. As they search for trapped people, Guevara is able to quickly get one of the customers out of the building. Raj and Malloy find the owner and he warns them that he just got a new shipment of high-grade ammo and it's in the back where the fire is. Malloy warns Griggs about it just as he sees it; he yells everyone to evacuate the back as quickly as possible. Lila finds an employee and races to help him out, with McGee and King assisting her. Then the flames reach the ammo and set it off, sending bullets flying all over the store. As Lila and King manage to get the man out, Griggs asks where McGee is. They look back and find him on the ground. As Griggs and Lila rush to him, they find out he's been shot twice, once in the right leg and once in the abdomen. Griggs yells that they have a firefighter down, and Richards tells Peter and Clayton check on McGee. As Peter and Clayton check on McGee, Raj and Malloy get the owner outside. The owner reveals his cousin, who works in the store, is still in the office area; Raj goes back in, despite Malloy telling not to. He makes to the office area despite the smoke, the flames and bullets going off all over the area, finds the owner's cousin and takes her down to the ground as another spray of bullets go of above. After a moment of being trapped, Dunnigan, Rossi, Vest, Keating, Grace and Rhee arrive with police-issue riot shields and they use them to provide cover for Raj, the cousin and themselves. As Raj and Rhee take the cousin, Dunnigan, Rossi, Vest, Keating and Grace each use the shields to cover them. As everyone made it out, paramedics went to check on the cousin. Both Keating and Richards scold Raj for endangering himself and other firefighters by rushing back in alone and tell him that they're going to have a major talk back at the station.
At Denver Memorial, everyone in Station 40 awaits word on McGee's condition. Then Kingston comes and reveals to everyone that the first bullet damaged McGee's spleen and it will have to be removed and the second bullet nicked a major artery in his leg and damaged a thigh muscle. She says that Barkawi is working on him now and the next few hours will be crucial. McGee's family shows up and Kingston goes to explain his condition to them. Raj isn't prepared for a reprimand from his fellow firefighters after his bold move to save the woman inside the gun store. As everyone else returns to the firehouse, Richards orders Raj to her office. As he follows her, Clayton reveals that the woman Raj saved is doing fine, which relieves everyone in the station. Richards sternly scolds him for putting himself and other firefighters in danger in the burning store. Raj says that the owner's cousin was trapped in the office and he couldn't just leave her behind. But Richards bluntly states that she knows he wanted to prove himself to everybody that he has what it takes to be a firefighter like his father. Raj retorts that it wasn't just about him proving himself, it was about not leaving anyone behind. But Richards sternly says that he and some of the firefighters who came in to help him could've gotten themselves killed by the exploding ammo, and several of them have families of their own. She tells Raj to imagine how he would face said families if they had been killed because of his reckless move. Raj says that he was closer to the woman than Malloy was and time was not on her side with the dangers inside the store. Richards tells Raj what he did, while well-intended, was reckless and he almost got himself and few of their firefighters killed, and they would've died on her watch if that happened, also noting that what he should have done was let her know of the situation and allowed her and the other COs to come up with a plan instead of going off on his own. She adds that part of her her job is to keep everyone in the firehouse alive and if he wants to continue to become a firefighter like his father was, he will not pull any more of the stunts like he did in the future. After a moment, she tells him to take the rest of the shift off and think about everything she has said. After Raj leaves, Chief Mullen sees this and asks Richards what it was all about; she fills Mullen in about what happened. Mullen acknowledges this, and hopes for the best outcome for McGee. She then reveals the reason why she's here is to discuss Lila's legal situation.
At the lounge, Lila speaks to Guevara and his father Jorge about why she did what she did and provides him the evidence about the building's unsafe construction practices, confirming that it was what she leaked to the media. Jorge agrees that it will clear her of slander, but she will still face industrial espionage charges from the company, and that Epstein will try to get her for all she can, as he is aware of Epstein's vendetta against her. At the same time, Clayton is surprised to see her father Earl (Delroy Lindo), a retired firefighter who served with Richards, Vest and Guevara, arrive at the station. As she leads them them to him, Vest and Guevara greeted Earl. As Earl chats with them and the other firefighters in the area, Richards is surprised to see him when she arrives in the lounge. As they embrace each other, she tells him that she'll be with him in a moment. Then she takes Lila aside and informs her, due to the lawsuit against her, the brass don't want her in the field; as such, she's being removed from Rescue 3 and relegated to desk duty in the firehouse until the case is resolved. Lila protests this, citing that with McGee already out, Rescue 3 will be two people down, but Richards reveals she's reaching into the floater pool to find temporary replacements. Later, Clayton asks Earl what's going on; he reveals that he is undergoing an operation to have a stent implanted in a plaque-filled artery of his and the operation will happen in a few days. He is letting her know if he doesn't make it out of surgery, she will be the executor of his will and estate. Clayton says that she will be in the hospital with him just incase anything happens. Then the alarm sounds and dispatch informs that Ambulance 15 is being summoned to respond to a possible overdose at a motel. Clayton and Peter head to the scene.
Peter and Clayton soon arrive at the motel and the manager lets them in the room, where they find a man unconscious next to the bathtub. They find some prescription sleeping pills on the floor near him, and guess that he has taken a lot of them. They proceed to give him some Narcan to counteract the drugs and take him to the hospital. There, Franelli assesses him and reveals the man has been despondent due to his wife having recently separated from him and he was at his lowest. As they returned, Peter and Clayton see that Earl is still here. Then Dunnigan sees Matt coming over to the firehouse. He goes to greet him and ask what he wants. Matt reveals his cellmate is getting out of prison in a few days and will be staying at his sister's place, but he is in trouble with certain inmates since he ratted them out on their escape attempt and they just found out about it. Matt asks for his help to convince Andrea's father to ensure he gets increase protection from the angry inmates. After a moment, Dunnigan says he'll see what he can do. Back in the firehouse, Jorge tells Lila to keep him appraised about anything that happens. Lila asks Guevara about his father since she notices that he is not much older than him. He reveals that his parents were in their upper teens when they conceive him while living in Capitol Hill, which is a gang neighborhood. After Jorge got his law degree, Guevara's mother was shot by a gang member during a gang initiation ritual. Jorge and his grandparents raised him afterwards and he joined DFD afterwards to stay on the right path. Lila acknowledges this and hopes he and Jorge can get her out of trouble. Richards and Vest talk with Earl, admitting that they miss having him around. Earl admits that he misses being a firefighter, but knew it was his time to retire after losing a couple of his firefighting friends to cancer, and notes that he did 30 years with the department. Guevara comes over and he, along with Richards and Vest, wish him good luck with his surgery. Clayton decides to take her father home. Afterwards, Dunnigan tells Matt that he talked to Andrea's father, who talked to the warden, who is an old friend, and he has been assured that Matt's cellmate will have increased protection until he gets out. Matt thanks him since he owes his cellmate for helping him get through the tough times in jail. Andrea arrives and picks both Dunnigan and Matt up to go home. Richards announces to everyone present that McGee will pull through, but his spleen had to be removed, and the muscle on his thigh has been repaired, but it will take time for it to fully recover.
At the end, Raj sits at home, thinking about his recent actions. Clayton helps Earl out at his home, Dunnigan and Andrea bring Matt to their home, Richards checks on McGee at his hospital room with his family alongside him. Peter returns home to Aurora, where she shows him the mountain landscape that she painted, which pleases him. Guevara comes to his father's apartment, where Jorge lets him in to watch a movie. Lila is at home, contemplating about her legal troubles and worried about what will happen next.
#6 - "Hot Connection"
Grace and her family are having a birthday party for her daughter Allison with many of her fellow firefighters in attendance. After the party, she and Dennis are in their backyard, watching the Denver skyline and chatting about how the party went. Dennis asks his wife for her help with fire safety at her workplace since it's a required checkup, and she replies that she and her truck company will be there when they are on shift. He asks how McGee is doing in the week-and-a-half since the gun store fire, and Grace replies that he is undergoing physical therapy. The next day, everyone is at roll call; Clayton reveals that her father is undergoing surgery to have a stent put in his artery today and Richards wishes for the best for Earl. Then she announces that two floaters are coming to fill in for Lila and McGee in Rescue 3 and Griggs asks who they are. Richards introduces DeMarcus Daniels (Texas Battle) and Renee Kinsey (Amanda Kloots). Dunnigan went to the fire academy with Daniels and notes that he is a decent firefighter, but is also a womanizer. Rossi has heard of Kinsey, citing that she worked for the department's Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Division, and once rescued three kids from a wildfire in the mountains. As Lila is doing desk work, Guevara asks how she's doing. She states that she is feeling frustrated by desk duty due to the lawsuit against her. Guevara says that he and Jorge will provide the best defense for her.
As everyone settled in, Daniels and Kinsey arrive and the personnel welcome them. Richards informs that they are only in for temporarily proposes, of which both of them are already aware. Meier shows them the locker room and the lockers that they will use for the moment. As everyone enjoys their downtime time, the alarm bell sounds and the dispatcher reveals that an apartment complex is on fire and people are trapped inside. With that, everyone responds as Jorge calls in to check on Lila. As the trucks close in, Dunnigan can't shake off a certain feeling about the fire. As they arrive, they see heavy smoke on the fifth floor area. Richards has Keating, Griggs and their squads to search for the trapped people and has Rossi and others on Engine 40 help evacuate whatever remaining people out of the building. As Rossi, Dunnigan, Vest, Raj and others look for more people, Keating, Griggs and others with them search the fifth floor. Engine 40 encounters some people coming down the stairs, and help direct them where to go. One woman with her baby daughter reveals to Dunnigan and Rossi that the fires started in the laundry chute and she thought she smelled gasoline; this made them realize that the fire is arson, just like the condominium fire. As Vest and Young evacuate the woman and her baby, Rossi relays it to Richards. At the same time, Griggs, along with King and Kinsey find a teenage boy and his younger cousin whom he's babysitting trapped in a room. After telling King and Kinsey to have a ladder over to the window, Griggs goes in despite the hot blaze and finds the two. Brix sends the ladder over to where Griggs is while Daniels goes up and helps Griggs get the two kids out through the window. Meanwhile, Grace and Rhee find a man down on the floor in a smoke-filled room while Keating, Malloy and Raj search in other rooms. Grace uses her mask to help the man breathe, which succeeds, before she and Rhee escort the man to safety. As Keating and the others on Truck 40 search the room, Raj spots another woman was holding her son in a panic and was trying to get into the elevator. He yells at her not to use it, but the doo door closes before he can stop them. He warns Keating about it and he radios Grace and Rhee to halt the elevator. Down on the first floor, Grace and Rhee arrive, along with Rossi, Meier and Asher. As they opened the elevator, they find the woman and her son burned to death in the elevator cab. Raj rushes over and, despite Rossi, Grace and the others trying to stop him, sees the burnt bodies; the sight utterly mortifies him. Vest arrives and sees what happened as well.
Elsewhere, Griggs, King and Kinsey find and rescued a man and managed to get them out, but Griggs and Kinsey find another victim dead from smoke inhalation. As everyone outside is treated by paramedics, including Peter and Clayton, Richards asks how everyone is doing. Keating says that everyone's okay, but Raj saw the burnt bodies of the woman and her son in the elevator cab. Richards sees Raj shaken up by what he saw and comes to him. Raj is horrified and also guilty, feeling that if he had gotten to them sooner, he could've stopped them and saved their lives; Richards assures him that he did everything he could. Dunnigan says that he finds the whole ventilation shaft and elevator shafts are doused with gasoline, just like the condominium fire, which dismays Richards and Rossi. At Denver Memorial, Clayton goes to check on Earl and he tells her the operation will start in a few minutes. She wishes him luck and is glad that he's taking care of himself. Then the doctors say that they are ready for him and Earl is moved to the OR for surgery. Clayton and Peter then check on McGee, who is relaxing in his hospital room. McGee reveals that he might be out of action for a month or so; Peter and Clayton wish him well. He asks about Lila as he has heard about her placed on desk duty, and Peter says that she's doing her best to hang in there.
Back in Station 40, Vest checks in on Raj, who is the bunk room, still horrified over the gruesomeness he witnessed. Vest tries to make him feel better by noting that they all have seen people burned to death at some point, but Raj asks if they've ever seen them that way after seeing them alive and well just moments before. In the office area, Lila asks Keating about Raj, and Keating replies that he pretty shaken up; she expresses hope that he'll be okay. Then she admits that she unhappy given that the lawsuit has cause her to be put on desk duty. Keating tells her to hang in there, and the case will be resolved soon. Dunnigan writes down the findings that he found on the apartment fire in his report and wonder who could be behind the arsons. Meanwhile, Truck 40 is at Grace's husband workplace, conducting an inspection. Grace inspects all the fire alarms switches and lights, and smoke detectors in the office, and the rest of the squad ensure that the hoses are working and the fire extinguishers are up to date. After checking out the smoke detectors, Grace tells Dennis that they've had to replace a couple of fire extinguishers and a smoke detector. Dennis expresses thanks that his wife and her truck company are able to help keep the fire code up to date. Then he reveals that he heard about the apartment fire on the news. Grace only says that four people died in the fire, including a mother and her son, for which Dennis expresses condolences. Grace says that she and her people have been checking everyone on who was in the building. Then Truck 40 receives a call about a fire in an industrial complex that is housing a sweatshop. Grace, along with Keating and the others in Truck 40 quickly head out in response.
As Truck 40 arrives on the scene, the fire becomes an inferno in some areas. Then Engine 40 and Rescue 3 arrive. Richards arrives soon after and tells everyone to find a way in and learn if there's anyone trapped inside. Engine 40 gets to work on putting out the fire while Truck 40 and Rescue 3 work to find a way in. They find a locked back door, and Griggs, along with King and Daniels, pry the door open. The room is filed dense smoke and fumes. Griggs and the others enter, they search the area. Meanwhile, as Rossi and the rest of Engine 40 continue to put out the fire, he notices a hand on one of the windows and warns the others. He then rushes over and sees that it has four women trapped inside a room filled with dense smoke. As Dunnigan arrives, along with Keating and others from Truck 40, Rossi says that they need to get them out quickly. With that, Rossi breaks the window and goes inside; he gets two of the women out with help from Dunnigan, Keating and others. Rossi then sees one of the woman pinned by the fallen filing cabinet. Dunnigan and Keating go inside and quickly take the third woman out as well. As that was happening, Rossi moves an office chair close to the filing cabinet. As he lifts it off the woman, he kicks the office chair in its leg to prop it up, before pulling her out. He then helps her to the window, while Keating and Dunnigan get her outside, where Richards has Peter and Clayton tend to her. After a moment, the woman is successfully resuscitated, much to the relief of Rossi and the others. Meanwhile, Griggs and Rescue 3 search around and find two men trapped in a nearby office. Griggs, along with King, Daniels and Kinsey break through the door. As King and Daniels move one man out, Griggs had to lift a fallen entertainment center on the other man while while Kinsey pulls him out. Then they get him out and to the ambulance. The final count is five dead, six critical and over sixteen fighting smoke inhalation.
Back in Denver Memorial, Clayton returns and awaits word for Earl's surgery. She starts to worry about her father and if he'll come through okay. Then Dr. Nunez comes over, revealing that the surgery was a success and Earl will need to rest in the ICU for a bit. Later, as everyone returns to the firehouse, Keating asks Lila how Raj is doing and she says that he is still pretty shaken up. Kinsey tells Vest that she may have solution for Raj. Meanwhile, after going through evidence of both arsons, Dunnigan confirms that it is most likely the same arsonist. He informs the COs about this and Richards says that she'll call the Fire Investigation Unit and update them.
Later, Peter, Keating, Griggs, Guevara, Brix and King are at Denver Memorial to check on Earl and McGee. Clayton reveals that Earl will pull through, but will need rest for awhile. She then goes to see Earl along with Guevara; Earl says to his daughter that it's good that he made it through surgery so he can keep on living, and he is at peace with his homecoming since he has everything covered for her. Guevara agrees with Earl about this and Clayton sits alongside her father. Back in Station 40, Jessup comes in and visits Dunnigan with his findings on the two arsons. He profiles the arsonist: he seems to want to cause as much damage as possible and possibly even takes personal pleasure in the chaos he causes. Dunnigan says that they need to get him and soon.
At the end, Vest takes Raj to someone's house. The man, Steven Massey, answers and welcomes Vest and Raj in. Steven has a burn scar on the right side of his face. His wife Julie comes over and reunites with Vest. She too had burn scars on the left side of her face. Raj sees the couple also have burn scars on their arms too, but they are not bothered by it. They reveal that they were caught in a school fire when they were younger and Vest took the backdraft that was coming at them by shielding them with his fire vest that prevented them from getting killed; that was how Vest's fire vest saved his life as well as theirs, hence the second reason behind his nickname. They calls their two teenage children, Frank and Gina, downstairs; Frank and Gina come down and reunite with Vest. Raj was surprised by Steven and Julie managing to enjoy life despite their scars on their faces. Steven and Julie says that once the burns were treated with skin grafts and such, they got on with their lives and become positive people and they got married and had children, and they are holding good jobs where people accept them despite their scars. Vest tells Raj that he's going to encounter more burn victims in his career and that while he can't save them all, he should try and put more focus on the ones he does save. Realizing what Vest is saying, Raj accepts that he will have to move forward from his failure to save the mother and her son and that he will continue to deal with burn victims no matter what.
#7 - "Torch of Dignity"
At Dunnigan's place in the morning, Matt reveals to his brother and Andrea that he and his old cellmate Nelson Toomey have gotten job offers at the Denver Pavilions mall, showing them proof of an open position for cook in one of the restaurants there for him and an usher in the movie theater for Toomey. Andrea tells him that he and Toomey better behave themselves if they want to remain out of jail, which Dunnigan concurs and wishes him luck. Guevara and Jorge prepare Lila for a deposition with the judge, along with Epstein and the higher-ups of the construction company. Lila is less than enthusiastic, but Jorge instructs her to keep her head up and not let the other side get to her. Clayton finds her father resting at his home after his angioplasty. Earl says that it will take him some time for him to get back to where he was before. Clayton notes that she does know the procedure since she did go to medical school. Earl acknowledges and tells his daughter to get to work, citing that a friend of his will is going to stick with him for the day.
Meanwhile, Richards enjoys the breakfast time with her family, and then heads for work. While en route to the firehouse, she spots a man on the bridge above the railroad tracks and realizes he's planning to commit suicide. She informs dispatch about it, stops and exits her car and comes over to the despondent man, Don Buswell, who tells her to walk away and let him die. Richards gently asks Buswell why he wants to end his life. After a long moment, he admits that he lost his job, has been unsuccessful in finding a new one, is about to default on his mortgage and lose his house, and his wife of 15 years has left him and taken their three children with her. Realizing how low he has fallen over his multiple misfortunes and is crying out for help, Richards reaches out to him, asking if he has any family and friends who still care about him. Buswell replies that he has family who live out of state in a town he grew up in; Richards tells him that he needs to think about his children and his remaining family and the consequences of how they will feel if he goes through with ending his life. She reveals that she had a cousin who committed suicide because of severe depression and how she and the rest of the family felt afterwards since they failed to recognize how severe his depression was. After a moment, Buswell walks back and abandons his suicide plans as the police and an ambulance arrive. Richards tells paramedics to take Buswell to Denver Memorial for evaluation and treatment for his depression. Once that is done, she heads back to Station 40.
At the Fire Investigation Unit, Dunnigan and Jessup check out the commonality of the two arsons. They question a few people who lived in the two buildings, and a couple of them reveal they remember a man rummaging in the ventilation shafts on the day of each fire, claiming to be clearing cockroaches out of the vents, and wearing a work uniform like a pest control specialist. The owners of the two buildings reveal that neither of them called for pest control recently. Checking the pest control company's personnel files, Dunnigan and Jessup find one of the man that resembles the one messing in the vents on the days of the fires and identify him as Bradley Farrington, a former Denver Fire candidate who was booted from the academy due to mental instability, and joined the pest control company four years ago. Dunnigan says that they have identified their arsonist since, having attended the fire academy, he knew the fire in the vents and elevator shafts would more damage and be hard to contain. Seeing a home address in the file, he alerts Denver PD, while Jessup asks Farrington's supervisor for his current location. Later, Dunnigan and the Denver PD head for Farrington's current location, which is another apartment complex. Dunnigan soon spots a man dressed in a pest control uniform, he notifies the officers in the area via the radio, and rushes to confront Farrington. The two get into a scuffle until officers arrive and detain Farrington. Dunnigan demands an explanation why he burned the two apartment/condominium locations that killed nine people and injured so many other tenants. Farrington rants that the DFD has gone too soft and they booted him from the academy after deeming him unstable. Jessup arrives and tells Farrington that he was already not right for the fire department due to his anger and mental health issues, which Dunnigan agrees with as the police haul him away.
As that happens, Richards arrives in Station 40. Rossi says that he and the others heard about her saving the man from suicide. Richards inform them that Franelli will evaluate Buswell. Then the alarm sounds, with the dispatcher saying that they have a flipped car in the area and that it has caught fire. Engine 40 and Truck 40 respond, with Brix riding Engine 40 since Dunnigan is busy with the arson investigation. As the trucks arrive, they see the car's engine and undercarriage is in flames. Ambulance 15 arrives shortly afterwards, as Rossi, Keating and the others rush over and find the driver stuck in her seat and her baby boy in her backseat. Vest gently breaks the glass window, while preventing the glass from hitting the baby. While Rossi and Young work to save the mother, Grace crawls under and unbuckles the baby from his car seat as the mother pleads for everyone to save her son. Grace gently takes the baby out of the burning car and she rushes him to Peter and Clayton for medical treatment. Rossi, with help from Young, Meier, and Rhee, works to free the mother. As the others work to keep the fire at bay, Keating and Rhee pry the driver's door with the Jaws of Life open. Meier hands Rossi a knife and he uses it to cut the seat belt, before he and Young pull her out. They help her over to the ambulance where Peter and Clayton are treating her son, who is stable, and they take the mother and son to the hospital.
At the deposition, Lila speaks in her defense, citing that what she did was to ensure the construction company's unsafe and dangerous construction practices is revealed and to ensure no one would go inside the unsafe building. Epstein attempts to attack Lila using their past history, but Jorge has it dismissed as irrelevant to the case. Lila notes that the company had been cited for violations related to their corner-cutting before, but had gotten better at concealing them. The CEO offers to drop everything if Lila names who gave her the information, but she refuses, citing that she refuses to allow a good man to be ruined for doing the right thing. Jorge defends Lila's actions, citing that cutting corners in building architectures is dangerous and that they cause floors and likely entire buildings to collapse and all for the sake of saving money. Epstein then tries to note that Lila published stolen company records and caused a lot of PR damage, even snarking that she always seems to blow up anything good that she has, covertly referring to their past relationship. Lila responds that at least she's hasn't sold her soul to the Devil for profit like Epstein has. The judge tells both of them to stop and warns Epstein if she can't act impartial towards Lila, she will be replaced as counsel. Jorge presents evidence from independent investigators that confirms what Lila sent to the news is legit and the company cut corners on the building that led to the construction site collapse and the workers' injuries. Later on,, after deliberations, the judge decides that there will be no criminal charges against Lila, but she will receive a hefty fine for leaking company records to the press. Epstein warns Lila that she and the company will file a civil suit against her. Lila retorts that she will see them in court as she and Jorge leave.
In the end, Dunnigan returns home and Matt reveals some good news: he been hired as a restaurant cook and Nelson has been hired as a movie theater usher, with both with them working in Denver Pavilions Mall, which pleases his brother. Lila returns to Station 40 and they give her support after being cleared, but she notes that there will be a civil suit against her. Richards says that she will be back in the field for the next shift. Lila thanks her by acknowledging that she can use all the support she can get; Guevara assures her that she will. Later, Richards returns home and Caleb asks if she's okay. She only replies that she saved someone from suicide and it reminded her of her cousin who killed himself by stepping in front of an oncoming semi-truck due to his severe depression. Caleb gives his wife some support as they sit together on the couch.
#8 - "Mean Streets"
At night, the personnel in Station 40 are on the night shift. Lila is back in Rescue 3 while Daniels is back in the floater pool. She asks about McGee's status and Griggs reveals that he is back home, but is not ready to return to at work. King says that it will be good to know when he'll return. Guevara speaks with Lila about her civil lawsuit and she replies that Epstein is still trying to get back at her. Dunnigan, Rossi, Keating, Vest, Young and Brix are watching a Sunday Night Football game, while Grace and Peter play darts. Raj cleans the bathrooms with help from Meier and Rhee and Richards speaks to Clayton about her father's recovery. As they continue to relax for the night shift, an alarm bells rings as the dispatcher reveals that there has been an arson attack on the homeless camp and everyone is required to approach with extreme caution as the police have been called in.
As they arrived at an old motel used for the homeless, the officer in charge reveals to Richards and the others that an angry mob of people raided the homeless shelter since it also is housing migrants; they tied them up, set the motel on fire and locked them in. The police believe the people responsible are still present in the area. Richards tells everyone to proceed with extreme caution while trying to save the people trapped inside, and to put Kevlar vests on since they might be criminals in the area. She has Truck 40 and Rescue 3 to go in and conduct the search-and-rescue while Engine 40 helps contain the fires. As Keating and Griggs lead their teams in, they cut the chains that locked the doors and head inside, with the inferno and smoke being very intense. As Grace, Guevara and Rhee move on to the main floor, Keating, Raj and Malloy head upstairs. Rescue 3 goes in from the back top floor; Griggs, Wolfe and Kinsey went to the top floor while Lila and Brix go down a floor. Others from Stations 8, 9, 10 and 16 arrive to help out as well. Lila and Brix find several migrants tied up; they free the ones nearby, but a few are burned to death before they can get to them, forcing them to evacuated the ones they've freed. Grace, Guevara and Rhee find a few of them trapped inside a manager's office. After Rhee takes a fire axe to the door but does no damage, Grace and Guevara unscrew the bolted door and free four trapped people inside, but the smoke inhalation is revealed to have killed three others. They evacuate the survivors from of the motel.
Keating, Raj and Malloy hear more people screaming from a janitor's closet. They pry the bolted door open, find some migrants, and quickly evacuate them. Unknown to them, someone watching in a protective suit with an oxygen task informs someone else via a radio that the fire department are rescuing the migrants as they speak. The other person responds that when they have the chance, that they should finish what they started no matter what. Griggs and Kinsey spot six people trapped in a blazing motel room with the windows sealed. After telling Wolfe and Brix to stay back, he goes into the fully involved room, despite the risks. Kinsey sees another bunch of people trapped in another room and tells Wolfe to stay with Griggs while she tries to find a way in. As Griggs brings two children out of the blazing motel room, members from Rescue 2 arrive and Wolfe tells them to get the children out. Kinsey and others from Truck 16 pry the door open and rescue two people, but find five others have collapses from smoke inhalation. Griggs manages to get one man out, but reveals that the others inside are already dead. As the Station 40 crew's oxygen tanks start running low, they evacuate, along with anyone else they found as members from other stations continue to search the area. As Peter, Clayton and other paramedics treat those who got out, Richards and Rossi help the police search for the attackers. Keating, Griggs and everyone somberly say how deadly the situation is and how bad it is in there. Lila even notes that they hope the police get the ones responsible. Meanwhile, as Grace scours the area, she sees someone wearing protective gear that doesn't have a fire department logo on it. Then a police officer, having noticed the same thing, comes to check them man out. Grace soon sees that the man has a gun and tries to warn the officer, but the man shoots him in the head, killing him. He then turns to aim at Grace, but she quickly runs and radios for help. The gunman, who turns out to be the leader behind the arson attack, warns the other attackers on the radio to find a female firefighter with long red hair, revealing she saw him kill a cop. His men acknowledge this as they continue on burning the motel.
As Grace makes it back, with the police meeting her, she informs Richards and Keating that she saw one of the attackers kill a cop and gives a description of the man and the protective suit he's wearing. The officer-in-charge alerts all officers to look for anyone wearing protective gear without DFD logos on them. Richards tries to tell Grace to stay at the outpost where she will be safe, but she refuses to be intimidated. As Truck 40 and Rescue 3 got their tanks refilled, Grace goes in to help Truck 40 despite risking being found and targeted by the arsonists. As they continue to rescue more trapped migrants, they also find others dead from the smoke, the heat and the flames. Then Griggs and Lila find a trapped child inside a blazing motel room; they go in and get the child out of danger. Grace and Rhee manage to save a woman whose arm was in flames, which they put out. Then one of the attackers sees them. Before he can fire his gun, Guevara hits him from behind as Grace and Rhee come upon the scene what was going. As they help Guevara, the firefighter pushes the attacker out of a window, sending him falling the main floor, where police officers detain him. They ask Grace if he's the one who shot the cop, but she affirms he's not the guy. Meanwhile, said shooter continues to stalk around the area looking for Grace and the opportunities to silence her for good.
As Rossi and the others from Engine 40 are containing the fire, he notices someone with protective gear without the DFD logo on the side entrance going upstairs and warns Richards about it. As the police are alerted, Griggs and Lila see the man Rossi saw approaching and inform the others. The man is about to torch another room where several migrants were in, but Griggs and Lila jump and fight with him. As the ceiling above them collapses, it pins the arsonist's legs. Griggs and Lila radio everyone about the now-trapped arsonist. At the outpost, the cops interrogate the captured suspect, demanding to know the names of those involved in the attack; the man refuses to cooperate and rants on how migrants taking away jobs that belong to people actually from their country and affecting their way of life with their camps and such. The police nonetheless continue to interrogate him, determined to get answers. As Grace and Malloy are helping two more people out of the motel, the leader spots her and begins to follow her. He informs his last remaining accomplice, revealing that he will cut her off. However, Grace sees the man in the reflection of the glass on the motel door and rushes into a side door; the man quickly comes after her. As the leader draws his gun and looks around from the doorway, Grace hits his arm with a fireplace poker, causing him to lose the gun. The leader then grabs the poker, knees Grace in the abdomen and slugs her down the ground. Before he can retrieve his gun, Dunnigan and Vest spray him down with their fire hose. As the police corner the leader, Grace IDs him as the shooter and they arrest him for killing one of their own. She then reveals that there's still one more left from what she heard, and the officers spread out in search for the remaining arsonist.
As the police search for the final arsonist, Keating and Raj find some protective gear uniform abandoned nearby. Meier notes that he saw a suspicious man walking by him earlier, headed in the direction of Ambulance 15. At the same time, Peter and Clayton finish assessing a patient, but just as they brought him to Ambulance 15, the final arsonist stabs said migrant in the chest and points a gun at Peter, ordering Clayton to drive him out of the area, which she reluctantly complies with. As they drive away, Keating and Raj warn Richards that someone ditched the protective gear near them and Meier saw a man passing by him, heading towards Ambulance 15. With this information, Richards suspects that Ambulance 15 has been hijacked and warns the police. As Ambulance 15 drives away, the police follow them. Realizing that he's been found out, the arsonist orders Clayton to make them back off or he'll finish off the migrant and kill Peter as well. Clayton realizes that the hijacker doesn't know that Peter is ex-military and pretends that she will make them back off while Peter quietly grabs a scalpel. While the arsonist is distracted by Clayton, Peter stabs the arsonist's right arm with the scalpel, forcing him to drop the gun. As Peter fights the attacker, Clayton stops the ambulance suddenly, sending Peter and the arsonist to the floor. As Clayton grabs the gun and gets out of the front, the police arrive and she quickly turns the gun over to them. Then the officers go to the back of the ambulance and detain the arsonist. Peter and Clayton watch the arsonist being taken away, then take the stabbed migrant to Denver Memorial. The final count reveals that 42 are dead, 76 have burns and over 57 have smoke inhalation.
As everyone makes it back to Station 40, Richards notes to everyone that they've had a rough night and that they all did their jobs and saved whoever they could. She tells them the two arsonists involved have given their testimonies to the police and that they will testify against their leader and their third accomplice, who was the second-in-command. Grace says that she is glad that they caught the leader before he could get to her. Lila says that the whole case was brutal given what the arsonists did to the migrants, and Dunnigan reveals that they infiltrated the motel posing as community workers and had been planning it for months. They got protective gear from one of the people involved, tied the migrants up in separate areas, and used lighter fluid, gas, ether, gunpowder, alcohol, and other flammable liquids as accelerants to destroy the motel and leave the migrants inside to burn to death, which shocks everyone in the firehouse. Raj notes that that he's glad that they were able to save who they could and take down the attackers; Griggs adds it's been a very long night. Richards tells them they should see their in-house chaplain or a psychologist the next day to help deal cope with everything that has happens, which all of them somberly acknowledge.
At the end, Griggs makes it back home to Naomi and their family after such a harrowing night. Keating also comes home, much to the relief of Katya and their children. Richards, Rossi, Vest, Lila, Guevara, Clayton, and Raj all go to Amanda's, where Ryan serves them drinks, feeling relieved that their night is behind them. Dunnigan and Andrea are also at Amanda's with their children after a difficult night. Peter makes it home to Aurora, who immediately embraces him in relief after hearing everything that happened. And finally, Grace comes home to Dennis and their children. Dennis is relieve to see his wife made it out of their motel fire; Grace admits that she had a rough night. Once the children are in bed, Grace somberly tells Dennis that she knows that her job has risks and is aware that said risks scare him and their children, and that she has been through some bad fires and lost some fellow firefighters, which can be traumatic for any firefighter. She admits that things can be hard for her family due to these risks but still feels that her job is worth on the good days. Finally, she affirms to her husband that she loves him and their children and apologizes for putting through such hardships. Dennis states that while what she does can be hard for him and their children and do get scared when that happens, he and their children have dealt with all that and they are proud of her because they know that she is making a difference. Grace, feeling better, embraces her husband in relief.
#9 - "Hard Knocks"
A few days after the harrowing arson attack at the migrant camp, Station 40 personnel speak their in-house chaplain Phillip Gorman or a therapist to cope with events that day. Raj points out that it was the most intense fire of his career so far. Dunnigan admits that it was one of the longest days of their lives. Richards says that they've went through some devastating fires and she witnessed a lot of them in her life, but this was one of the worst. Lila expresses relief that they don't have to testify against the arsonists responsible for the attack. Rossi notes that a few more people died in hospitals due to the severity of their burns and such. Griggs adds that other firefighters from different stations who responded to it are also seeing therapists. Peter and Clayton reveal that them getting hijacked in their ambulance has hit them, but they are doing better. Grace admits that her seeing the leader kill a cop in cold blood really made her think about how thankful she is to have family and friends supporting her in a time of need, just like everyone else. Keating expresses hope that the arsonists get the death sentence for what they did, while Guevara reveals that two of them have pleaded out in exchange for testimony against their leaders. And Vest and Young hope that will be enough to give them a long sentence.
As everyone relaxes, works out, and continues coping with the arson attack's aftermath, Donna visits the firehouse. She asks Richards how the gang is doing after everything; Richards states that they are getting a handle on things. Donna nods, adding that if Jerry was still around, he would seek Gorman to help cope. Richards agrees as she consoles Donna over her husband's memories. Then the alarm sounds and dispatch announces that a truck carrying asphalt has crashed into an occupied car near the overpass above the I-25 and there is hot asphalt on scene. Everyone suits up and heads to the scene. As the crew arrives, they see hot liquid asphalt pouring from the top the car with a man trapped inside and some people trying to dig it away from the man. They take over as Engine 40 and Rescue 3 work to extricate the man from the burning hot asphalt while Truck 40 works to get the truck off the car. As Truck 40 removes the truck using their own firetruck, Rossi, Dunnigan, Vest, Asher, Griggs and Wolfe help get the man out, discovering he has sustained burns from the sticky, hot asphalt. Peter and Clayton quickly rush him to Denver Memorial, where burn specialists and plastic surgeons take over his care.
As everyone returns to the station, Gorman checks in on them. While most of the firehouse enjoys relaxing time as nighttime comes, Richards and Gorman speak to Rossi, Keating, Griggs and Clayton on how everyone is coping. They reveal some are handling things better than others; Gorman says that everyone processes traumatic events differently, while Richards notes that it's was a tough night for all them. Gorman understands and that his door is always open if they wish to talk. Then Grace comes up, informing Richards and Keating that she has to leave early since she's got a family emergency, but not going into full details other than it's very important and promising she'll be back in the next shift. As Clayton chats with Peter about him seeing Gorman, he says that he's fine, as he's seen some crazy stuff as an Army Medic. Then the alarm sounds and dispatches announces that Ambulance 15 is needed at a residence for a cardiac emergency. Upon hearing the address, Peter realizes it's where Aurora's father lives as he and Clayton respond to the call. Upon arriving, Aurora frantically reveals her father suffered a heart attack while watching his favorite show and collapsed. Finding him unresponsive, Peter and Clayton perform CPR and defibrillate him twice times until they get a heart rhythm and pulse. After distributing some cardiac medication, they roll Aurora's father to Denver Memorial. Later Drs. Boyle and Nunez reveal that Aurora's father's condition is still critical but stable. They reveal that the electrical currents in his heart went out and he will need a pacemaker; Aurora gives consent to the procedure.
At the bar, Grace arrives and a bartender friend of hers greets her. He reveals that her father, Floyd Taylor (David Warshofsky), was drinking heavily at the bar and got into a massive bar fight with one of the customers, and refused to leave even after being cut off. He warns her that her father is likely on a bender and Grace acknowledges him as she pays him off. She then her inebriated father's attention and he drunkenly asks if she should be saving lives from some fire. Grace tells him to come with her, but Floyd refuses to leave. But Grace sternly tells him he's done and that he's leaving with her. As she escorted him out, Floyd sings himself in a drunken state. Grace can only bemoan how her father's drinking has caused trouble again. As she takes Floyd to her place, she warns him that he's got one week to sober up; after that he's on his own. She also tells him is to stay in the guest room downstairs and he is not to cause any noise that will alarm her family. And most importantly, no drinking especially around the kids. Floyd says that she and her family won't even know he's there when he cleans himself up. As they enter, Floyd reunites with his grandchildren, then goes downstairs to the basement bathroom, Dennis asks Grace if her father's okay and she admits that he hopes he will clean himself up this time. Dennis reminds her the last time they saw Floyd, they got into a verbal fight due to his heavy drinking. Grace says that she has warned him not to drink around their children and that if he does, he will be tossed out. Dennis is uncertain, but agrees to give him a chance.
At the end, Gorman speaks to Griggs about the aftermath of the arson attack. Peter checks on Aurora as her father is in a coma at the ICU. Grace checks on her father, who is passed out in the bathtub downstairs. Keating supervises Guevara, Malloy, Asher and Wolf on cleaning their firetrucks. And Richards, Dunnigan, Rossi, Vest, Raj, Young and Brix hang out in Amanda's, chatting about how their day went following the chaotic arson attack.
#10 - "A Blazin' Christmas"
At Station 40, the personnel and their families are spending time together for the holidays. Dunnigan is dressed like Santa Claus while Andrea is Mrs. Claus. Richards reminds Dunnigan if they have to respond to the emergency, he will have to lose the Santa suit. Dunnigan notes that the suit is for entertaining their families. Matt introduces himself to Grace, who is cooking for the firehouse and helps her with the food. Grace, knowing Matt's history of being a charming gambler, shows him her wedding ring and reminds him not to flirt with her, which he acknowledges. Guevara and Vest check on Lila on how she is preparing herself for her civil lawsuit; she says that the case will start depositions in in early January. Griggs and his family hang out with Rossi, Danica and their children. Naomi asks Danica how's she's been since the divorce; she replies that it's been an adjustment, but she's doing fin. Vest helps the children put in Christmas stockings in the galley and the bunk rooms. Rossi and Griggs show Raj how to pry a door open with a pry bar. Clayton asks Peter about Aurora's father, and he reveals that he will be fine, now having had a pacemaker implanted. Keating and his family speak to Grace, just she and Matt are serving food to everyone. Keating asks Grace about her father; Grace reveals that her father Floyd was a police officer for 23 years and was the Captain of SWAT. But he developed a drinking problem over the years but always refused to admit it. Then one day, when he showed up for duty hungover due to a department ceremony the previous night, he botched a raid the same day and two officers died under his command. He was summarily dismissed from the force, and was barely able to hold on to his pension. Grace's mother divorced him afterwards and Floyd fell into a depression, his drinking got even worse, and he has refused time and time again to get help for his issues. Keating apologizes for this, but Grace says that he's got nothing to apologize for. Richards informs Vest that McGee will return to duty shortly after New Year's, at which he is glad to hear. Vest also adds that they should help make a better Christmas for Donna and her children, with it being their first since Jerry's death. Richards replies that she is working on something for that, along with Rossi and Griggs, and Vest volunteers to help too.
As the firefighters and their families enjoy the holiday party, the alarm bells ring as the dispatcher announces that a car has skid on ice and crashed into a house as Engine 40, Truck 40, Rescue 40 and Ambulance 15 respond. Richards stays with everyone of their families as they head out to the emergency. As they arrived on the scene, they see the car crashed into the side of the house. Rossi and Vest check on the family who live in the house, and they reveals that they're okay, but the driver of the car is trapped inside. Keating and Guevara go to check on the man trapped in the car and find him unconscious. With help from Engine 40 and Rescue 3, Truck 40 slowly cuts the roof of the car. As Griggs, Lila, Guevara and Vest help free the man and slowly get him out of the vehicle. Peter and Clayton come to treat him as he regains consciousness. He reveals his name as Ray Garland and reveals that he skid on a black patch of ice while trying to come home for Christmas. Peter and Clayton assure him that he will be alright once they get him to the hospital as they put him the ambulance.
Arriving back in Station 40, the personnel rejoin their families and Richards. Vest says that he may have a plan to give Donna and her children the best Christmas, which they need following Jerry's death. As Grace and Dennis are in the bunk rooms with their children, she asks her husband about her father Floyd. He replies that Floyd offered to cook Christmas dinner for them at home; Grace admits that her father was the best at cooking especially during the holidays. Rossi learns from Danica that his divorced parents are at it again over wanting to do something for their children, which frustrates him. He wonders what he will do with them about their ongoing issues with each other, since they been at each other's throats since he was a child; they were never good spouses, but did care for him. Clayton's father Earl then comes in and sits down to relax as Clayton greets him. Earl says that he is doing better after having a stent put in his heart. Peter reveals about his girlfriend's father having a heart attack; Clayton says that he was glad to have a stent before he himself had a full-blown heart attack. The alarm bells sound, as Ambulance 15 is dispatched to respond to a child in distress; Peter and Clayton then head out. As they arrive on the scene, a police officer on the scene says a toddler boy started choking on a miniature Christmas ornament. Seeing his condition, Peter finds the ornament is stuck in his throat. On the side, he can somewhat breath, but he is still in distress. Clayton notes that in this case, doing the Heimlich maneuver might make things worse, or even cause him to swallow the ornament. They bring him to Denver Memorial where Kira tends to him; with help from a thoracic specialist, they were able to get the ornament out.
Afterwards, Richards, Vest and everyone else arrives at Donna's house. She is taken by surprise by this, and Vest explains they wanted to help make the Sorenson's first Christmas without Jerry as jolly as possible. They give the Sorensen children some nice Christmas presents and some stocking stuffers. They also provide the family a full-course Christmas dinner, with a turkey, ham, stuffing, sides and desserts, much to Donna's amazement. During this time, Dunnigan reveals the reason why he brought Matt to Station 40 is to ensure his gambling addiction doesn't get in the way of the holidays since he usually gambles massively during the holidays. Matt admits that he would often have either the best or worst luck and would either make a mint or be flat broke by the new year's start. Dunnigan wants to ensure he doesn't fall into temptation this time, which Matt agrees with. Donna becomes thankful to her husband's fellow firefighters for giving them a happy and jolly Christmas for her and her children. Vest embraces her in a hug as she weeps in his arms, still missing Jerry. At Grace's home, she and her family arrive and Floyd shows them his special roast turkey, honey ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, macaroni and cheese, string beans, and alcohol-free Egg Nog he made from scratch, which the family sits down to eat. Grace states her wonder why Floyd could've been a cook for a cop bar or something after his dismissal from the police force. Floyd says that a cop bar wouldn't hire him because of his history, and he only considers cooking a hobby; the only passion he had in life was police work, which he lost.
At the end, Richards returns to her family as they celebrate the holidays at home. Dunnigan, Matt, Vest, Guevera, Raj and Lila hang out with Donna and her children. Clayton and Earl have a mellow Christmas as they eat leftovers. Keating and Katya watch a Christmas show with their children. Griggs, Naomi, and their children sing Christmas songs. Grace and her family continue to celebrate the holidays as she wearily keeps an eye on her father. Peter and Aurora help bring her recovering father home in time for the holidays. And Rossi spends his Christmas with Danica and their children as his parents show up, with him still unsure of what to do with them.
#11 - "New Year's Grievance"
During a snowy, cold day in Denver, Grace tells Dennis that Floyd better not drink since sometimes around New Year's is where he would often fall off the wagon. Dennis asks if they're going to have another fight like she had with her father back then, and Grace says if she does, let her handle it. Then Floyd serves them breakfast. She asks Floyd about the music she heard last night; he says it wasn't loud and it was just soft classical music to relax him. Grace decides to take her word for it, but keeps a suspicious eye on her father. Meanwhile, Rossi speaks to his mother that he needs to stop her old feud with his father, because it's causing problem for his children. Mariana says that Edward had multiple affairs behind her back before the divorce and that his work as a FBI agent always came first ahead of them. Rossi says that Edward spent whatever time he could for him. Mariana notes while Edward had tried to be a good father to him, she was the more consistent parent to him despite previously working as a councilwoman and says that their marriage became utterly miserable when he refused to support her on when she sought re-election to her seat on the city council. Rossi says that Edward likely had a few good reasons for that, though it doesn't excuse his previous affairs, or him and Mariana feuding with each other since he was a child. He also reveals that he knows about her own affair with a co-worker and Mariana admits that it started after she left Edward. Rossi tells his mother that she and Edward need to put their feud aside and let it bygones for the sakes of both him and their grandchildren.
At Station 40, McGee finally returns to active duty and everyone welcomes him back. Griggs and Richards tell McGee to be sure to take it easy on his first day back. As everyone starts their shift, the alarm sounds as the dispatcher announces they got a jackknifed truck in a crowded intersection. As they arrive on the scene, they find the truck jackknifed on an icy intersection and the trailer has broken loose and fallen on top of the occupied car. There are also two other vehicles that got into minor wrecks due to the overturned trailer. Dunnigan, Rossi, Griggs and Lila go to the car and find a man and his daughter trapped on it, but alive. Keating and Truck 40 work to get the trailer off of the car. As Peter and Clayton check the victims in the other wrecks, Richards, Rossi and Keating have everyone attach cables to the trailer. Dunnigan and Guevara attach the cables to Engine 40, Truck 40 and Rescue 3. Dunnigan, Guevara and Brix back the firetrucks up, using the weight of the vehicles to pull the trailer off the car, and setting it back up to the standing position. As Dunnigan, Rossi, Raj, Keating and Guevara pry the passenger door off with their tools, Rossi and Grace carefully packaged the girl and get her out to Peter and Clayton, who check on her as another ambulance arrives. While the ambulance takes the girl to the hospital, Keating, Griggs and their crew cut out the roof with help from Rossi, Dunnigan and Vest. After they package the father for transport, Peter and Clayton take him to their ambulance.
After returning to Station 40, Richards reveals that they are fortunate the family inside that smashed car only received minor injuries, despite the weight of the trailer. Dunnigan notes that close calls happen all the time in their line of work, for both them and civilians. Raj adds that it's a miracle no one was killed inside that car. Vest asks McGee how it's feel to be back on duty; he replies that it is good, but he is still working on getting back to his old self. Later at night, as everyone starts to settle down for a bit, another call comes in, with dispatch saying that a family of six, with two kids who have mysteriously fallen ill. When Keating hears the address, he realizes he knows the family that lives there as they are friends of his. Richards has everyone respond to see what's going on. As they arrive, Keating rings the doorbell, but no one answers. After a long moment, the father, Neal Gamble, finally comes to the door, but is showing to be quite out of it. Upon seeing Neal's symptoms, everyone realizes that the Gamble family has fallen victim to carbon monoxide poisoning. Grace and Dunnigan take the youngest children, Vince and Carla, out for Peter and Clayton to examine as they called for additional ambulances. Vest and Griggs take Neal's wife, Margaret, outside while Raj and Lila rush another child, William, out of the house as well. Rossi and Guevara find the last child, daughter Gwyn, in the closet and get her out. The squads take the family to Denver Memorial, where they are given oxygen, and Margaret, Gwyn, Vince and Carla are taken to the hyperbaric chamber to flush the carbon monoxide out of their systems.
Shortly after the squads return to the station, Griggs receives a call that his mother, Celia, has suffered a blood clot and is en route to the hospital; he immediately heads to Denver Memorial. Shortly afterwards, Edward arrives and Rossi greets his father. They discuss how he has to settle his longtime feud with Mariana. Edward says that the reason why he didn't support Mariana on her reelection because he felt she was being a hypocrite criticizing him for his career and not being willing to sacrifice anything from hers. He adds that he wasn't a perfect man, but it doesn't mean he wasn't a good father to him and he was still a good FBI agent back then. Rossi said that the same could be said for his mother: neither of them were perfect, but they did their best as parents. He also states that they need to end their feud aside because it is affecting both him and his children. Edward says that he will try to make peace with Mariana if possible.
At Denver Memorial, Griggs arrives at the hospital and Kingston informs him that Celia had a blood clot on her left thigh and she is undergoing surgery right then and there. Griggs asks who's operating on his mother and Kingston reveals that Nolan is. Naomi and the kids arrive, and Griggs tells them about what's going on with Celia. Back in the station, Lila updates Richards and Guevara about her upcoming civil lawsuit. She's nervous about potentially getting saddled with a multi-million dollar debt that will follow her for life; Guevara tells her just follow what Jorge tells her to do. Elsewhere, Grace goes home to check on her family. When she enters, she sees the children interacting with Floyd. Josh and Allison seem to be enjoying their grandfather's company, as he messes around with them. But she notices that Floyd's speech is slurring, then Dominic reveals to her and Dennis that he saw Floyd hiding a bottle in a nightstand cabinet in the guest room and earlier, he drank from it, next to Josh and Allison. Angered, Grace goes to deal with him and Dennis secretly tells Josh and Allison to come with him. The infuriated Grace finds the bottle, then confronts her father, demands he leave since he broke his promise and drank around her children. Floyd tries to explain, but Grace refuses to hear his excuses as she throws his things outside. The drunken Floyd gets belligerent as their argument gets heated. Then Floyd slaps her in the face as he says that he won't be disrespected by his own daughter before hitting her again, resulting a nose bleed. Grace tackles Floyd down and slugs him in the face. Then, while slapping him around, she berates Floyd for drinking heavily at the ceremony years before the day before and as a result, got two officers killed in a botched raid in his drunken state. After managing to knock Floyd out, Grace turns sees Dennis and their children witnessing the altercation and apologizes to them for having to see it. As Floyd recovers, Grace tells him to pack his things and leave.
At the end, Richards, Vest and Raj interact with Drake, Katherine, their children and Ryan at Amanda's, chatting about their day and such. Rossi and Danica oversee Edward and Mariana's interactions with their children, Keating checks on the Gamble family, while Celia wakes up and sees her son alongside her in the ICU. Grace sees the Uber she called arrive, and she and Dennis puts her drunken father to it. She tells the driver to take Floyd to the nearest motel and pays him in advance. And Guevara helps Lila with how to handle the civil lawsuit against her.
#12 - "Crash Under Pressure"
Lila prepares herself as she enters the courthouse with her civil lawsuit, while Jorge reminds her what to do. She enters the courtroom where Epstein and the construction company's owners wait. As she sits down, she makes her testimony about exposing the company's unsafe construction practices and how their actions led to workers' injuries at the site. Epstein tries to break her in cross-examination, even over Jorge's continuous objections, but Lila doesn't crack under pressure, while the judge stops Epstein and warns that she will be held in contempt if she continues to badger Lila. Lila responds that she was only doing what any half decent person would do, much to Epstein's annoyance. Back in the firehouse, Clayton reveals that Earl is doing very well and Peter expresses his relief about it, while also revealing that his brother Jackson has been offered to join the U.S. Marshals after pursuing the fugitives. Then the paramedics are dispatched, along with other ambulances to a house party, where multiple teenagers have overdosed.
When Peter and Clayton arrive at the apartment, they find five teenagers having overdosed with ecstasy laced with fentanyl. As other paramedics treat the other teenagers, Peter and Clayton tend to a teenage girl and administer Narcan to her. Once she awakes, they took the girl, Jenny Eckhart, to their ambulance. Three out of five teenagers survive the overdoses, but the other two die. Peter expresses his frustration over people getting addicted to street drug and killing themselves over it. Clayton express her own feelings about it, but they need to move past their feelings and save whomever they can from such dangerous narcotics. Shortly after they return to the station, the alarm bells sound as the dispatcher announces that a window washing rig at Wells Fargo Center has malfunctioned, with two men trapped on it. When the team arrives, they find the rig is on the 22nd floor, one of cables breaks loose, with two workers holding on to dear live. Richards has Engine 40, Truck 40 and Rescue 3 go inside to coordinate rescue efforts. Rossi, Keating and Griggs lead the others to floors 21 and 22. Dunnigan, Vest and Meier take a window out of the 21st floor, and Keating, Grace, Raj and Rhee were able to get to the one of the two men who is barely holding on to the rig. Griggs then climbs out of the 22nd floor window, straps up the second man on the rig and lowers him to the 21st floor, where Rossi and Brix get the man to safety.
Later, after everyone returns to the station, Griggs reveals that his mother Celia is recovering nicely and she will be out of the hospital in a few days. Lila returns and reveals the outcome of her civil lawsuit: the judge ruled in her favor and she is officially in the clear, which relieves everyone. As everybody celebrates, the alarm bell sounds again and the dispatcher reveals a small plane has crashed in City Park. As the team arrives on the scene, they find the plane crashed into a tree, where it's still hanging from. Truck 40 gets its ladder set up, and Lila heads up to the plane, where she finds five people, including the pilot, trapped inside. She gets a young boy out of the plane and hands him over to Griggs, then gets the boy's mother out. She then finds the boy's father injured and bleeding, and announces that they need a medic. Peter goes up and checks on the father. The father says that the plane hit a bird strike, several went into the engines, and, despite the pilot's efforts, they couldn't reach an airfield and end up crashing into the tree. Once Peter readies the father for transport, he and Lila get him out of the plane. They then move to check on another victim, a friend of the family, only to discover that he has died from massive blood loss. Lila then finds the pilot wedged into his seat and the cockpit's cabin. After getting equipment from Griggs and the others, they freed the pilot and get him out of the plane safely. With all survivors out, the two then extract the dead victim's body and bring it down, as more paramedics and clean-up workers arrive on-scene.
After returning to the station, Keating asks Grace if she heard from her father since kicking him out. She reveals that he checked out the motel she sent him at and she has not heard from him since. Keating gives Grace sympathies on what she went through with Floyd. Richards tells her that she should make sure her family will be alright after her altercation with Floyd. She says that they're all okay, but that the kids are disappointed about their grandfather, citing that they truly do love him in spite of his flaws. Keating notes how such drinking can cause ripples within families; Grace adds that being an only child dealing with an alcoholic father, she was lucky to have been raised to be a smart, independent woman by her mother, and notes that this has helped endure toxic masculinity in most of her life and made her who she is. Richards informs her some of these traits have made her one of the most valuable assets in Station 40. Grace acknowledges this, as everyone settles down for the rest of the shift.
At the end, many of the Station 40 personnel are at Amanda's. Rossi, Griggs, Grace, and Lila are in the game room, playing pool. Lila reveals that her childhood was tumultuous at best, since she dealt with the pressure of sexism and homophobia with much of her life. She also reveals she grew up with five brothers and always felt she had to compete with them for everything. Then she joined the Air Force and became a pararescue specialist for a few years. After leaving the Air Force, she joined DFD and proved herself to everyone while wanting to set an example for the LGBTQ+ community. Rossi, Griggs and Grace give Lila some support for this as they continued to play pool. Lila says that her day in court was a reminder of the many tough battles she's fought in her life. Dunnigan and Andrea chat about their day with Peter. Andrea asks Peter if Jackson has made a decision about his future yet; Peter replies that he's still figuring things out. Dunnigan says that making vital career decisions isn't always easy, but they all have to do so at some point. Richards, Vest and Keating then speak to Ryan about their day as everyone enjoys the night out.
#13 - "Trouble in Paradise - Part 1"
Station 40 responds to an house explosion that kills the homeowners and Dunnigan discovers it was caused by a pipe bomb. They later discover it is linked to one of the escaped fugitives the FJU is pursuing and is on a rampage to get the people who help put the escapees in prison. Meanwhile, Raj helps one of the firefighters finding a person who stole his identity and Peter and Clayton help a woman who is having a severe allergic reaction.

#14 - "Class in Session"
Peter and Aurora spend time at Amanda's, where the latter plays a pinball game with the former standing nearby. Aurora says she is amazed that the restaurant got a couple of pinball games, and Peter replies that the owner, Ryan's son-in-law, felt the place should have some vintage nostalgia in the game room, among other things, and in working condition. After the last ball goes down, Aurora says it's amazing on how Amanda's was established as a restaurant, along with a bar and a game room, which Peter agrees with as they share an intimate moment. She asks Peter how his brother adjusting as U.S. Marshal and he replies that it's taken time for him, but he sees fulfillment with him being a fed now. Later Aurora drops Peter off to the station. Inside, Richards informs Rossi that there will be a new candidate for him to assess and Rossi asks who it is. Richards reveals the candidate as Victoria "Vicki" Carr (Brec Bassinger); Rossi notes that he heard of her father being a firefighter in the same station once. Richards confirms this, revealing her father was now-retired Lieutenant Bruce Carr, and she worked under him on Truck as a young firefighter.
With today being the 11th anniversary of his father's death, Raj speaks to Vest, wanting to know more about James. Vest tells him what he knows about James during their time at the academy, noting that he actually set a new record back then for fastest structure rescue. Then Vicki arrives and Rossi welcomes her to the station. Richards notes to Vicki about her having served with her father in the past; Vicki acknowledges this, and says she hopes to impress everyone during her time there. Rossi tells Vicki that he will be assessing her today on Engine 40 & she must what she's told when she's told, and that her ability to not only perform the job but follow instructions will be vital as two whether she stays at the firehouse or not; he also reminds her that she is not the first candidate to wash out via their assessment. Richards notes that it's standard thing for candidates and Vicki acknowledges this. While Lila is cleaning Rescue 3, Griggs informs her that they've got a new candidate and confirms its Bruce Carr's daughter. Lila reveals that she knew Bruce Carr and also notes that Vicki has a bit of a chip on her shoulder from what she remembers; Griggs thinks about this. Then the alarm sounds and dispatch reveals that there has been a roof collapse at Denver University, with people trapped and injured. With that, everyone responds, suits up and heads out.
As the crew arrives, the head of campus security says that the roof on one of the campus residence halls collapsed due to it being under renovation, some people have pinned by debris others have been injured in the scene. Richards has Truck 40 and Rescue 3 work to free the trapped with Engine 40 assisting them. As Griggs and the others reach the area where the roof collapsed, they find five people pinned by fallen debris. With Rossi and Dunnigan assisting, they bring in the equipment to free them. Keating and Truck 40 join in to help tend to the injured victims. Grace and Raj help a college girl, who leg was struck by falling debris. When they bring her outside, Peter and Clayton tend to her. Vicki stands by and helps Rossi and Dunnigan with another one of the victims. The victim is looking for his girlfriend and becomes frantic upon not seeing her amongst the injured to the point of having a panic attack. Vicki sees this and is able to advise the man to calm down. Guevara and Malloy find a student with a head injury from the debris and the former radios for medics and a backboard. Griggs, along with Lila and McGee, help free a pinned janitor by lifting a slab of debris off him. Vest, along with Meier and Young, come across another male student injured at the scene. After getting him outside, medics took care of him. Rossi and Dunnigan managed to use airbags to lift some debris off their victim with Vicki's help as they pull him out. The man is still worried about his girlfriend, and Vicki asks where did he last see her. He says she was headed towards her room, which is in the danger zone. Vicki takes off to try and find her; Rossi sees and yells at her to stand down, but she apparently doesn't hear him. Keating finds a woman pinned by a fallen wall during the collapse and, getting help from Rhee and Malloy, pulls her out. Richards enters and asks Rossi and Griggs about the situation. They note that the place is a mess, but so far they have no fatalities. Rossi says Vicki took off to find the missing girl and he told her to stand down, but she apparently didn't hear him.
Then Vicki yells out for help and Richards, Rossi and Keating sees that she is with the missing girlfriend, who is pinned down by a large chunk of debris. Richards radios Griggs to help them free the girl. As Griggs, Lila and other Rescue 3 members arrive, they use their equipment to lift the debris off her, and after a few minutes, they are able to get her out. Rossi demands Vicki to explain what she was doing. She explains that she was trying to put the other victim at ease by finding his girlfriend, but he berates her for just running off, reminding her that she is a candidate under his command. Later, when everyone returns to the station, they decide to relax after the tough work at the campus. Vicki asks Richards about Rossi; Richards replies that he is very dedicated and wants to ensure fire candidates are up to the task and do the job right. Vicki says he came down on her for running away to find the missing girlfriend and Richards says that he was in the right, since she did so without running it by him or anyone else and she still has to learn how to follow the rules and protocols, no matter what. Vicki somewhat acknowledges her on this, while Richards feels a little frustrated by Vicki questioning her about Rossi. As Raj cleans Engine 40, Rossi walks nearby. Raj asks why did he come on Vicki a little hard. Rossi says that she ran off half-cocked to find a victim's girlfriend in the campus incident; he notes that while her heart was in the right place, she didn't run it by him or any of the other COs on-scene and she could've been hurt or worse. He also advises Raj not to follow in her current example, to which he nods in understanding. Then he asks if Rossi knew his father; Rossi admits that he only met James a few times on several calls and didn't know him that well. But he did know that James was one of the bravest firefighters in Denver. Then dispatch announces that there is a three-car accident in an intersection. The crew suits up and heads to the scene.
As Station 40 arrives on the scene, Keating and Truck 40 went to an overturned SUV that had a couple and their two children in the backseat, with Dunnigan, Raj, Meier and Young helping. At the other wrecked car, Griggs and Rescue 3 help the mother and her six-year-old daughter. The third vehicle is attended to by Rossi, Vest and Asher with Vicki nearby. As they try to get the driver out of the truck, Vicki goes around the back and squeezes in through the broken window. She kicks the truck's back door to allow Rossi to get in. She starts to move the driver, but Rossi tells her not to until they put a neck brace on him first, noting her to remember her. As Dunnigan, Keating, Grace and Rhee get the family out of the SUV, the father reveals that car with the mother and her daughter ran into them, and he could've swore he saw the mother hitting her daughter before the crash. As Griggs and Lila get the daughter, Camilla Navarro, out of the car, her mother, Dolores, angrily berates her daughter. But Lila grabs Dolores and confronts her on the side of the car, demeaning her for abusing her daughter. As Keating and Grace confirms how the accident happened, Lila further lambastes Dolores for hitting Camilla, which also caused her to be distracted and to crash into two cars. As Dolores shoves Lila off of her, she tries to get at Camilla, only for Lila to slug her in the face to keep her away from the child. Griggs has the police arrested Dolores for reckless endangerment and child abuse, while Lila looks at the abusive mother with contempt. Rossi tells Vicki that while he gets that she helped save the man's life, but she has to run the ideas by him and act by the rules, not impulse.
As the crew returns to the station, Griggs reveals that Camilla is at the hospital with her paternal grandparents now, which Lila is glad to hear; she also hopes that Dolores gets everything she deserves. Brix also reveals that Dolores is also at the hospital under arrest and under police guard for her crimes. Richards calls Lila to her office, and confronts her over how she confronted Dolores at the accident scene; Lila defends herself, citing that Dolores caused the whole accident by taking her eyes off the road, all to abuse her own daughter. Richards says there's no doubt about that, and there are people who have confirmed that that's how it all went down, but at same time, she would've faced assault charges and the DFD would've face a lawsuit. Lila states that Dolores shoved her and was trying to abuse Camilla further, which is why she punched her out before the police arrested her; Richards assures her that the FJU will handle Dolores' case. Griggs asks Lila if she was okay and Lila says that she will be now, noting that it felt good striking Dolores for what she was doing to Camilla. Grace feels the same way as she hates mothers who abuse their own children, and Dunnigan adds that any abusive person doesn't deserve to be a parent in the first place. Raj tries to speak to Vicki about how she should run her ideas past Rossi, stating that he wants her to set a better example in the DFD. Vicki notes that she's determined to show that she belongs in the DFD and in Station 40, and she needs to push hard to make a good impression. Rossi speaks with Richards about Vicki's actions on the second call. Richards advises to make sure she follows the rules and protocols as best as possible.
At night, everyone was eating dinner when the alarm bell rings and dispatch reveals that there's a fire in a high-rise condominium. Station 40 responds to the scene, along with Station 8. Upon arriving, Richards coordinates with Chief O'Brien on how to proceed. O'Brien says that they got people trapped on the fourth and fifth floors, with the fifth floor being where the fire started. He warns them that the fire has weakened the floors up there, and that they should be careful when up there. With that, Richards sends Engine 40 and Truck 40 to the fourth floor and Rescue 3 to the fifth floor and to check out the roof. Griggs and other Rescue 3 crew search the fifth floor and find an invalid elderly man trapped inside with his nurse unconscious from the smoke inhalation. As Lila and Brix get the nurse out, Peter and Clayton work to stabilize him. Griggs, King, and McGee then escorts the elderly man out of the room, but the floor nearby collapses and part of it almost hits Rhee below. Griggs breaks the nearby window and Brix moves the Rescue squad truck's ladder to the window. As Lila climbs up, King comes out while Griggs and McGee hand them the elderly man, having placed him on a backboard for his protection. Lila and King slowly move the man down to safety with Brix helping them. At the fourth floor, Engine 40 and Truck 40 search for people in the area and helps evacuate a few of them. Keating hears a baby crying from one of the suites. Listening for the sounds, he tracks them to another suite. Keating breaks the door open and finds the baby's mother holding the child, both trapped by dense smoke. As the flames start coming in, Keating gets them to a safer area. Grace and Raj enter, and escort the three to the stairwell. once Keating got the mother and her baby outside, Peter and Clayton immediately tend to the child, who has stopped breathing. After several tense moments of resuscitation, the baby begins crying again, much to the mother's relief.
Elsewhere, Vest helps a couple get out of the condominium. The man says his brother is somewhere on the west side of the fourth floor. Vest radios to any firefighters on the west side from both houses to keep their eyes out for anyone still there. Rossi and Grace acknowledges. As most of the fourth floor is cleared, Rossi says he and his crew will search the west side and tells Keating and his company go to the fifth floor to help Griggs and Rescue 3. At the fifth floor, Grace, Raj and Rhee find a teenage girl and her younger brother in a suite and help evacuate them. Then the floor below them starts to give; Grace tells Raj and Rhee to get the kids away from the floor. As they do, the floor suddenly collapses with Grace still on it and she quickly uses the fire axe to grip the stable part of the floor and prevent her from falling. Keating and Malloy see this, and the former has Raj and Rhee get the kids out. Then he and Malloy help pull Grace to safety. Elsewhere, Griggs finds a woman in a heated suite and manages to go through the flames and carry her out. Back on the fourth floor, Rossi, Dunnigan and Vicki check out the west end. Rossi has Vicki check the door for heat and gets it open with a fire axe. Seeing no one in the room, they check the area. They find two women trying to figure a way out and Dunnigan tells them to take the stairs to get out. They then hear a couple of voices coming from outside; they peak out of a broken window and find a pair of window washers trapped on their platform just below. The washers explain their platform malfunctioned and got stuck as a result of the fire, and they're worried it might fall as a result too. Dunnigan asks about the brother that still missing and Rossi tells him to take Young to find him while he, Vicki, Meier and Asher find the way to help the window washers. Vicki suggests that they quickly harness up and conduct a retrieval; Rossi agrees, but notes they have to follow protocol in doing so. Vicki protests that she has personal experience climbing and repelling, but Rossi says that protocol is there for everyone's safety. Dunnigan and Young search around and find the man's brother down near the laundry chute in the hallway. After some navigation, they bring him out where medics tend to him. Meanwhile, Rossi and the others make preparations for the retrieval. As they set up, Vicki only rigs two lines for herself, instead of the standard four as required by protocol; she then prepares to rappel herself down, but Rossi notices her failure to follow protocol by not having enough lines. She protests that they don't have time to waste on protocol this time and rappels herself down to the platform, with Meier following after once he secures all his lines. After securing and harnessing the washers, Vicki and Meier start to bring them back up; Meier successfully brings his man up first. But as Vicki brings the other washer up, one of her lines snaps, leaving the two of them dangling, and Meier is forced to go back and help while Rossi and Asher stand by to help pull them back in. After everyone is safe, Richards asks for updates, Rossi reports the situation with the window washers, citing that they're safe, but also notes that they need to discuss Vicki when they get back. Grace is revealed to have received a minor cut on her arm from the collapsing floor, but is otherwise fine. Richards tells her to get treated at the hospital and come on back, to which she agrees. Meanwhile, with everyone evacuated, the stations start going about putting out the condo fires.
Later, after everyone has returned to the station, Rossi confronts Vicki over disregarding protocol again, and putting herself, the victims, and her fellow firefighters at risk. She protests that she was only trying to get the washers to safety as quickly as possible, and didn't anticipate that one of her lines would snap, but he notes that that's why they have the protocol to fasten at least four instead of just two like she did. Rossi then informs her that she is out of Station 40, despite her insistence it's where she belongs, like her father was. He notes that while she did come up with the idea on how to save the washers and his good initiative and instinct, her constant rushing into things and disregarding protocol have show that she's not ready to be at her father's old station yet. Richards shares her agreement with Rossi about his decision as she did in fact not follow protocol and endangered herself and others on the recent call; she does, however, note that with some experience in other houses, she might be get another chance to prove herself in the future, but for no she'll have to try somewhere else. With that, Vicki packs up and leaves in dismay. Afterwards, Grace returns after getting stitches for her cut arm. Just then, Dominic shows up and Grace asks her son what's he doing in the station. He says that one of his friend's siblings was in the condominium fire she was at and said that she almost fell through the floor. Grace realizes that the teenage girl and her younger brother she helped saved are family of one of her son's friends, and she replies she's okay, and that she used an axe to stop her fall. Dominic says the rest of the family, especially Dennis, are upset by what happened. Grace tells him not worry since she only got a small cut on her arm, and her fellow firefighters are looking out for her. Dominic acknowledges his mother as he heads back home. Keating cheers her up, saying that it's what family does when their loved one gets injured in the line of duty. The next morning, everyone finishes out their shift.
At the end, Lila goes to Denver Memorial to check in on Camilla who is with her grandparents in her hospital room. The girl is happy to see Lila since she protected her from her mother. Her grandfather reveals that his son, Camilla's father, had planned to divorce Dolores after learning of her physical abuse of their daughter which was a result of her ongoing alcoholism, but he died in a car accident on the I-70. Now that Dolores has been charged, they can now take care of Camilla without the risk of her mother hurting her again. Lila is glad to hear this as Camilla thanks her for saving her from her mother. Raj pays his respects to his father at the cemetery with Vest and Guevara nearby, while Grace returns home and assures her family that she's okay. Later, the Smiths go to Amanda's where Keating, Griggs and Clayton are also at. Grace has Dominic spend some time with Finn and Mary, who are playing air hockey with Danielle and Simon the game room. They offer him to watch how they play the game so he can learn, while the team discusses how their shift went. And Rossi comes home and checks in on his children with Danica letting him in.
#15 - "Facing Your Troubles"
Vest wakes up early one morning, only to hear loud arguments from his neighbors. Believes something more is going on, he calls the police. When the police arrive, officers reveals to Vest that they have previously have gotten calls from other neighbors about the husband and wife, Roger and Madelyn Tucker, and they believe Madelyn is the victim of domestic violence, which leaves Vest unsettled. He asks why Roger hasn't been arrested despite so many calls, and they explain that every time they've come, she's has refused to press charges. Vest decides to talk to the FJU to see if they can help. Later, while arriving at the station, Katya reminds Keating not to forget to buy a birthday gift for their son Art; Keating acknowledges her as he enters the firehouse. Rossi asks Keating what he's going to give Art. He notes that Art has a passion for RC vehicles, and he's considering getting the latest RC helicopter for him. Grace says that would be a good gift since she got a similar gift for Josh for his birthday and he enjoyed it a lot. Griggs and Brix are playing poker, at which Brix wins the current game. Peter, meanwhile, is assembling a C-130 Hercules plane model with help from Meier and Young for his nephew Franklin Jr. Richards, Dunnigan, Guevara and Lila talk to Donna and she tells them that her children are all in therapy and have finally started coming to terms with Jerry's death; Richards reiterates that Station 40 is always open to them.
As everyone relaxes in the lounge room, dispatcher reveals that there is a man down at a homeless shelter and Peter and Clayton respond. Upon arriving at the shelter, the manager leads them to a man in his 50s laying on the floor. They find the man is an Air Force veteran name Thomas Kincaid and that is having a heart attack. With Peter performing CPR, Clayton defibrillates him twice and regains his heart's rhythm and pulse dead. After administering some cardiac meds, they take Kincaid to Denver Memorial. After dropping off the patient, Peter talks to Clayton how his life as an Army medic was like for him. Clayton asks why he chose to be a paramedic instead of a doctor or a nurse; Peter replies that it was a lot like being a medic, and required less training and schooling. As they returned to the station, Vest is visited by Sykes, Lincoln and Redbird and he speaks to them about the situation with the Tucker couple. Lincoln reveals that Roger Tucker is a board member for Regional Transportation District (RTD) and has a lot of City Hall connections, which is likely why Madelyn hasn't pressed charges against him, and why no one before now has done more than call 9-1-1. Vest says that he knows about what's going over in house since he lives nearby. Sykes agrees that they will keep an eye on this case, but they need Madelyn to press charges to get Roger. Vest says that he'll figure something out and call them when he can.
Later, while Keating and Guevara are out on a grocery run, the latter spots someone he recognizes, Sancho Rodriguez. Guevara reveals that Sancho is a gang leader on Capitol Hill and he has encountered him in the past while living that neighborhood with his family. Sancho spots Guevara and walks up to him, greeting him. Guevara acknowledges him, noting that he hasn't seen him in this particular grocery store before; Sancho says that he's simply trying somewhere new. After Sancho heads out, Guevara has an eerie feeling about him, stating his belief to Keating that Sancho is probably moving into new territory. After a moment, Keating tells him to continue shopping and worry about Sancho later. Later, after they returned to the station, Lincoln reveals to Vest that Roger is at a meeting right now; Vest suggests to let him talk with Madelyn first. Rossi, Dunnigan and the rest Engine 40 take Vest over to the Tucker house, with Lincoln and Redbird following. Vest informs her that he knows about what's going on and he and the others want to help her. Madelyn is scared to come forward because of Roger's connections to City Hall, but Vest assures her that he's got people he knows who have higher connections, including the FJU and the D.A. Office. He even notes that there is one A.D.A. Katherine Sullivan, who has a no-nonsense stance on domestic violence cases, and she will stick by Madelyn and protect her from her husband. After hearing this, Madelyn agrees to come forward and press charges against Roger. As they head out, Engine 40 is called for a chemical fire. Vest tells Madelyn to go with Lincoln and Redbird to the police station as he gets onboard Engine 40 to respond to the fire.
As everyone from Station 40 arrives, it is revealed to be a multiple-alarm fire at the chemical factory. Rescue 3 goes to the roof while Engine 40 and Truck 40 head inside, trying to find people trapped in there. As they evacuate several trapped workers, Griggs and Brix get a couple of people down the ladder, the foreman of the factory reveals to Richards that there are chemical fumes coming closer to the roof. After Griggs, Lila and King help two others out, Richards warns Griggs to evacuate the roof because of the incoming fume. Just then, Brix saw a man below the skylight of the roof and informs the others. Griggs, realizing what Brix is about to do, tries to warn him, but Brix breaks the window and the fumes hit him full-force, and he collapses, coughing and struggling to breathe. As Griggs and Lila quickly pull him away, the former desperately calls out that they've got a firefighter down. The other Rescue 3 members get Brix back down to ground level, and Peter and Clayton immediately rush to treat him as he continues struggling to breathe. They drive Brix to Denver Memorial, where Grier, Kira and Gilchrist began to work on him. Grier quickly figures that his lungs have been burned from the inside due to the fumes.
As everyone anxiously awaits word, Gorman, who is also at the hospital, gives them some needed guidance to help them cope with what has happened. Grier then enters the waiting room and gives them the rundown on Brix's condition: the chemical fumes severely burned his lungs, and have likely caused a severe upper respiratory tract infection. Richards asks about Brix's outcome and Grier says that it's too early to tell and they have put him on a special breathing treatment for his lungs. Richards orders some of the fire crew to return to the station and she will appraised them if anything develops. As some of the squad members return to the station, Lila notes that they should've been faster to get to Brix before the fumes got to him; Griggs responds that they all should've known about the fumes sooner. Raj questions if Brix will truly be okay, and Young replies that all they can do is wait and pray. As everyone waits for word on Brix, Keating asks Guevara about Sancho their his encounter with him; Guevara admits he isn't sure what Sancho is planning. At the hospital, Lincoln and Redbird arrive and give Richards and the others present well wishes for Brix. Then they revealed to Vest that Madelyn is pressing charges against Roger and has provides them with enough evidence of her husband's abuse against her for them to arrest him; Lincoln adds that Katherine and Saxe will prosecute Roger. Vest asks where Madelyn will be staying and Redbird reveals that she has been placed in a secret shelter for women and families fleeing domestic violence.
At the end, everyone present in the firehouse can only continue to hope for the best for Brix, as Rossi, Vest, Grace, Rhee and McGee all return to the station. At Denver Memorial, Richards stays with Brix in the ICU, where he is on a special breathing machine. She feels slightly shaken up by what has happened to Brix as she stands by him, waiting and praying for his recovery.
#16 - "Divergence Of Paths"
A week after Brix was overcome by chemical fumes, everyone at Station 40 is wondering about his recovery. Griggs feels that he and Lila should've gotten to him sooner, while Keating wishes that they had known about the fumes sooner, and then none of it would've happened. Rossi responds that what happened to Brix was beyond anybody's control, which Vest agrees with. At the Denver Pavilions, Grace and her family are eating at a restaurant, talking about how Brix is doing, and how Allison did pretty good with her history of Colorado project at school. Just as they were about to head out, Dennis and Josh hear a baby wailing. Grace hears it as well and investigates. To her utter shock, she finds a baby girl abandoned behind the garbage bin. She quickly puts her jacket around the infant and Dennis drives everyone to Denver Memorial, while Grace calms the baby down. Upon reaching the hospital, Kira takes the girl and notifies the FJU and Child Welfare Services. Dominic asks if the baby will be okay and Grace says that with the best care, she will be, and the police will find the girl's parents.
Later, Dennis drops Grace off at the station, Brix arrives and they welcome him back. Brix reveals that has to use an inhaler four times a day now, and he's on disability at the moment, but is hoping he'll be able to return to work soon. He asks how he can help, and Richards puts him to work in the office for the time being. The alarm bell sounds and dispatch announces an impalement accident in somebody's basement; Ambulance 15 and Truck 40 respond to the incident. Once they arrive, the wife leads them to her husband, whose abdomen has been impaled by a loose water pipe that has been shut off. They reveal that they were having plumbing problems, and he was trying to replace the pipe, when he slipped and fell on top of it. Keating has Guevara and Rhee use a buzzsaw to cut the pipe while the others cover him up so no sparks hit him. Once they cut the pipe, they get him on a gurney on his side where Peter and Clayton tend to him. After packaging him up as much as they can, they load the man into the ambulance.
Once they return to the station, they chat with Brix on the dining area. During that time, Richards gets a call from Grier and get some bad news about Brix's condition: the burns from the chemical fumes have left him with permanent damage to his lungs, and thus a chronic respiratory problem; as such, he can no longer serve as a firefighter. Richards sadly acknowledges this as she ends the call. After a moment, she goes to Griggs and gives him the bad news about Brix, which leaves him crestfallen. Later, after having taken some time to process, the two call Brix into Richards' office to break the news to him. The news devastates Brix, even as they tell him that he will put on a disability retirement and will still be paid 75% of his salary. Griggs and Richards console him as best as possible and advise him to see Gorman over this. Elsewhere, Drake and Andrea visit Grace and reveals the baby she found is believed to have been abducted during a car theft at a gas station in Golden based on the exact clothing the baby girl had on, and a security camera in the Denver Pavilions catching the car near the dumpster where she was found. Using facial recognition, the FJU have identified the man as a habitual car thief, suspecting he got more than what he bargained when he realized the baby was in the back seat; Grace hopes that it's the same baby she found. Before Drake and Andrea head out, Dunnigan asks his wife what they should do about Piper, given her rebellious behavior lately; Andrea states that she is looking at ideas for her, admitting that Piper has been acting more defiant and angry, and has been hanging out with the wrong crowd. Then the alarm sounds and dispatch announces there's been a three-car accident in an intersection. Engine 40, Truck 40, Rescue 3, Ambulance 15 and AC 26 responds while Brix stays behind, still feeling distraught by the news about the end of his firefighting career.
Once they arrived in the scene, Rossi and his crew check out the first car which was broadsided while Keating, Griggs and their crew go to the second car and a van that have collided head-on. Keating, Grace and Raj help two children out of the backseat of the car, while Guevara, Rhee and Malloy work to extract the children's unconscious parents from the front seat. Dunnigan and Meier help a woman out of the passenger side of the broadsided car while Rossi, Vest, Young and Asher work to get the driver out. Richards helps Griggs and Rescue 3 cut the roof off of the van. When they do, they find a gay couple and their daughter trapped inside. Back at the other car, Keating helps Guevara and the others free the children's parents as Peter, Clayton and the other paramedics tend to them. Rossi and the others, meanwhile, freed the driver on the broadsided car. At the van, Richards, Griggs and King help free the child while Lila, King and McGee slowly and carefully free the two gay men from of the van. When they ask what happened, the driver of the second car says that his brakes suddenly failed as he was trying to stop at a red light. Guevara checks the car's brakes and they are found to be defective. The driver admits he recently brought the car at a user car dealership and they showed him evaluations that it was in pristine condition inside and out; Guevara notes that the man should get a good attorney recommends suing the dealership for selling him a bad car.
Later, when everyone returns to the station, they find Drake and Andrea waiting. Grace asks about the baby and they confirmed that she was the baby that was in the stolen car and they have reunited her with her family; Grace is relived to hear this. Then she asks about the man who kidnapped the baby indirectly and revealed that they found him in South Denver trying to escape on the I-25. Drake says that the baby's family wants to meet the firefighter who saved their daughter. After a moment of thought, Grace says that she'll see them after her shift is over. Elsewhere, Gorman expresses his concerns to Richards and Vest about Brix and how he's handling the end of his firefighting career. Vest notes they should keep an eye on him. Richards suggests that they should talk to Griggs and Grace about it since the former is the leader of Rescue 3 and the latter has helped the morale of the firefighters. Gorman thinks the entire station should learn the truth about Brix's condition so they can all support him.
Later on, everyone is shocked by the news of Brix's condition. Raj wonders what they can do for him, while Guevara adds that Brix has been a dedicated firefighter in his whole life and losing his career will feel like the end of the line to him. Dunnigan wonders where Brix is and Young said he saw him getting into his car and driving away. Dunnigan tries to call him, but they find that Brix has left his phone behind. Richards remembers that his car has GPS tracking on it and Griggs knows the car's tracking number. Once they type in the number, they find that Brix is heading to the now-closed chemical factory where he got hit by the fumes. Fearing that he might be contemplating suicide, Richards takes Griggs, Grace, Vest and Guevara to get to Brix while telling the others to stay on shift. When they arrive in the chemical factory, Richards, Griggs and the others search for Brix, until Griggs eventually finds him on the roof, where he considering jumping off. Brix tells him to let him die as his firefighting was everything to him and now those days are over. But Griggs refuses to let him die and tries to assure him that he can still do other things for the fire department. Richards and Vest arrive up on the roof to talk to the despondent Brix and Grace and Guevara follow soon after. They note that they will still have his back and will still be family to him, just like they've been to Jerry's wife and children since his death the previous year. With that, all five are able to successfully talk Brix out of suicide and Griggs suggests that he should become a fire department dispatcher, where he can continue to help people in time of need. With that in mind, Brix agrees to after he takes some personal time to get himself together.
At the end, Grace and her family visit the baby, whose name is Barbara Jansen, and her family: mother Carol, father Alex and older brother Ken. The family, especially Carol, profoundly thank Grace for finding Barbara; Grace replies that she is a mother of three children herself and couldn't imagine going through what they went through. Carol admits that she left Barbara in the car with the heater on since it was cold at the gas station, and she was trying to run a quick errand to get some new wiper fluid for her car when it got stolen with Barbara in it. Grace gives her some gentle advice to not repeat that mistake for her children's sake, which Carol assures that she won't and again thanks her for finding her daughter. Griggs drops Brix back at home and the two exchange acknowledging nods at each other. Richards goes over who should replace Brix on Rescue 3 at home with Caleb, who advises her to take some time off of that since they have an outing with their children. Richards acknowledges and the family heads out together for their outing.
#17 - "Clear As Smoke"
Richards has early breakfast with her family, and Caleb advises her to find a suitable replacement for Brix, someone who has what it takes to get it done, no matter who they are. Richards admits that is what she's thinking, but she's not sure as to whom yet. At Peter and Aurora's home, they are getting dressed after having had an intimate night. Aurora says that her father is now back to where he was before his heart attack and his pacemaker is helping him to lead a more normal live. Peter says that her father's lucky he didn't have any heart muscle damage, but he should slow down a little now since he has a pacemaker; Aurora says that her brother is making sure of that. As she looks out the window, she notices some arguing from the apartment across the street from theirs with their silhouettes shown in their closed shades. As Peter steps up, Aurora wonders what is going on. Peter asks if she knows the people in that apartment; Aurora replies that she doesn't know as the argument continues. Then they see someone stab the woman with a knife repeatedly, which shocks them. Peter calls 911 about the stabbing as Aurora sees the man rush out of the apartment and speed off in his car, from which she gets the license plate number. After the call, Peter grabs his medical bag and rushes over to the apartment, with Aurora insisting she come along, and taking a baseball bat with her. As they slowly enter the house, they find the woman stabbed in the chest and bleeding out. As Peter and Aurora tend to her, the latter asks who did this. The woman, Hannah Ameche, reveals that her boyfriend, Ralph Graf, has become abusive due to his drinking after losing his job and he stabbed her when she threatened to dump him and kick him out if he refused to seek help. As Peter uses his medic skills to save Hannah, an ambulance arrive and paramedics take over Hannah's care. Peter and Aurora give the officers everything, including Graf's name and such, and they ask the two to come to the station to give a formal statement. Peter then calls into work telling his bosses that he's going to be a little late coming in.
At Station 40, Clayton informs Richards and the others that Peter will be late due to him and Aurora talking to the police about Hannah's stabbing. Richards asks if they are okay and Clayton replies that they are, but are giving their statements to the police at the moment. Griggs asks Richards if she thought of anyone to replace Brix, she thought that either Raj and Asher should do the job, since the former's father was on the rescue squad and he has shown his father's abilities to find people, and the latter, who has thrown his hat into the ring, is a logical choice due to his experience. Rossi agrees with this assessment, but Keating and Griggs are not too sure yet. Guevara comes in, informing Richards that Deputy Chief Gary Conroy (Aidan Quinn) has arrives and he wants to see her in her office. When Richards arrives, Conroy first asks if she found anyone to replace Brix yet, and she reveals is checking out two possible replacements in her firehouse; he suggests that she make a choice soon. Richards asks what he's doing at the station and Conroy reveals a fire candidate is suing Rossi for sexual harassment. Richards quickly realizes that Vicki filed the lawsuit to get back at Rossi for removing her from Station 40. Conroy says that he doesn't agree with the lawsuit, and neither does Chief Mullen, but most of the brass are sensitive about protecting the reputation of the DFD. Richards asks if they've spoke to Vicki's father, Bruce Carr, about it. He says that they have and reveals that Carr isn't sure who or what to believe. Richards acknowledges that and thanks him for letting her know.
Upon learning of the lawsuit, Rossi is angered that Vicki did this to get back at him for removing her from Station 40. Richards says that Mullen and Conroy don't agree with the lawsuit, but the brass are sensitive to these kind of lawsuits. Rossi notes that he will speak to Guevara about it. Peter arrives and Griggs asks if he and Aurora are okay; Peter replies that they are and Hannah is in surgery now. Richards expresses hopes for the best for Hannah. Then she informs Raj and Asher that one of them will take Brix's place. Asher asks why select two people to try to fill in for Brix. Richards replies that Raj has his father's abilities to find people while Asher has the experience. Asher feels that his experience alone should be enough to grant him the spot, also noting that Raj has only been on the job for less than a year. Richards states that Raj has in fact made some good saves during that time and that all though Asher does have the qualifications, she wants to ensure whichever one she selects will be right fit for Rescue 3. Asher says that if she wanted a second possibility, why didn't she think of others like Guevara, Meier, Young, Rhee and Malloy, who have more experience than Raj. Richards replies that they are happy where they are in their positions. Then, alarm bells sounds as dispatch reveals that there has been an explosion at a gas station and people are trapped in the area. Everyone suits up and heads to the scene.
On route to the situation, upon hearing about the lawsuit, Vest gives Rossi some encouragement on how to handle his situation, and to try not to do anything reckless over it. Rossi says that he will speak to Guevara about this after the emergency. As they arrive at the gas station, they find the gas pumps are gushing out flames. After Richards calls for additional firetrucks on the scene, Keating and Grace spot a family of three with raging flames around them. Keating notes that they need to pave a path to rescue the family and fast. Richards has Truck 40 to find something that they can go through the flames. Grace sees that the family is terrified and says that they need something to shield them from the heat and flames. Griggs may have an idea; he has Rescue 3 grab fire blankets from their truck and prepare to rush in, while Richards calls for a special foam unit to combat the ignited gasoline. Griggs, Lila and Rhee use the fire blankets and rush through the flames with them. When they reach the family they wrap the blankets around them. The father, Hank Bullock, reveals that a drunk driver struck the gas pump and the fire it ignited the other pumps, causing the exploding inferno. While Griggs, Lila and Rhee help the Bullock family, Rossi and Keating have their teams provide hose cover to create a safe area for the family. As Rescue 3 prepares to move the Bullock family to a safe area, the special foam unit arrives; Rossi points over to where they need to spray the foam. Once the area is sprayed, Griggs and Rescue 3 get the Bullock family out of danger and to the safe area, where Peter, Clayton and other paramedics tend to them. The foam unit then focuses on extinguishing the fire with the help on the rest of Station 40.
As everyone returns to the station, Rossi informs Guevara about the lawsuit against him. Guevara warns him not to approach Vicki about it because she might use it against him by claiming intimidation. Rossi then asks what should he do, and Guevara instructs him to keep his head down and just keep doing the job like he's always done. Elsewhere, Peter sees Aurora at the station. He learns from her that Hannah made it through eight hours of surgery with two blood transfusions and doctors say if Peter hadn't helped her on the scene, she would've died; she also reveals the police are still looking Graf. Peter asks if she was okay, and Aurora admits that she never witnessed anyone stabbing a person before. He advises her not to deal with it herself. Asher sees Raj loading some gear back into Truck 40. He tells Raj that he feels Raj shouldn't promoted to Rescue 3 so quickly and that he should get the position since he's got more experience. Raj says that it wasn't not his idea to join the rescue squad. Asher says that maybe true, but he hasn't turned it down either, meaning he likely won't stop fighting for the position in Rescue 3. Raj says it's not everyday a rookie gets a shot at a promotion like this, and he shouldn't turn it down. Asher, however, feels like Raj is jumping the line in front of guys like him who have earn the promotion after years of work. Griggs then breaks up the argument, tells Asher to help Dunnigan with getting everything back in place on Engine 40 and tells Raj to go help Grace with making lunch. Raj and Asher begrudgingly go about their orders. As Peter and Clayton restock the ambulance, Clayton reveals that she got word that the police found and detained Graf for questioning about 15 minutes prior; Peter is glad to hear this.
After their shift ends, Guevara reminds Rossi to remember his advice not to approach Vicki and if she approaches him, to have it recorded as proof. Griggs and Richards eye Raj and Asher noticing the tension between as they finished their shift. Peter returns home and consoles Aurora over her feelings over witnessing Hannah's stabbing and assuring her that Hannah will be okay; Aurora is gladly to hear this, and the two embrace lovingly. Griggs comes to Naomi and their children after shift, causing him to think of the family he helped save from the gas station inferno. Rossi meets up with Danica and he informs her about Vicki's lawsuit against him. Danica knows that her ex-husband wouldn't do such things and he confirms this, believing Vicki accused him to get back at him for removing her from Station 40 due to her impulsiveness and such. Danica suggests hire a lawyer to help him out. Rossi reveals he is currently working on getting help with that as their children arrive, and throw their support behind him before the family sits down for dinner.
