Following the destruction of the Death Star at the hands of the Rebel Alliance, the Empire has started to build a new, more powerful one, the Death Star II. Darth Vader, a Dark Lord of the Sith, arrives on the incomplete Death Star II and is greeted by Grand Moff Tian Jerjerrod. Vader puts pressure on Jerjerrod to double his efforts, but Jerjerrod requests more men to work on the station. However, he agrees to Vader's demands when he learns that Emperor Palpatine will be coming to visit the Death Star II.

In a dark cave on Tatooine, a cloaked figure is seen contructig a new lightsaber. At the nearby palace of crime lord Jabba the Hutt, astromech droid R2-D2 and protocol droid C3PO arrive with a message for the Hutt. They present a holographic message in which their master asks Jabba to release his captive friend, Han Solo, but Jabba rebuffs the offer and takes the droids as his own.

Later, Jabba is entertained by a group of dancers. He is attracted to one of the newer, younger dancers, Oola, and tries to pull her towards him. Oola resists, so the enraged Jabba opens a trap door beneath her feet and she is dropped into a dark pit. A large gate opens and an unseen menace advances out of the darkness towards the terrified Oola, who is then devoured.

A bounty hunter named Boushh arrives with a captive Chewbacca in tow, looking to collect the bounty on Chewbacca's head. While Chewbacca is detained, Boushh is regarded suspiciously by bounty hunter Boba Fett, who captured Han in the first place, as he notes his old ally is acting oddly.

Later that night, while everyone else is seemingly asleep, Boushh releases Han from his carbonite tomb and unmasks himself as actually being Princess Leia Organa. Although Han is temporarily blind, he recognizes Leia's voice. Suddenly, they are interrupted by Fett and the rest of Jabba's court. Han is imprisoned alongside Chewbacca, while Leia is forced to wear a skimpy gold bikini, and to further add to her humiliation, is forced to wear a chain around her neck, making her Jabba's personal slave.

The hooded figure arrives and stands before Jabba, revealing himself as the Jedi Luke Skywalker. Luke makes one final plea to Jabba to release his friends, but Jabba simply laughs. Leia notices that Luke is standing on the trap door and tries to warn him, but Jabba yanks on the chain. Luke uses the Force to grab a blaster and aim it at Jabba, but a Gamorrean guard named Jubnuk rushes forward to protect his master. Just then, Jabba opens the trap dorr, and they both plummet into the pit.

The gate opens and huge monster known as a rancor emerges. Jubnuk realises what has happened and tries to climb out of the chamber on a steep slide, but no avail while his former compatriots laugh and mock him. The rancor then corners Jubnuk, picks him up, and bites him in half.

The rancor next turns it's attention to Luke. It takes a swipe at him, causing him to lose his lightsaber. Luke tricks the rancor into return to it's chamber and then uses the Force to throw a rock at a control panel on the wall, causing the gate to come down and crush the rancor. A furious Jabba has Luke arrested.

Jabba sentences Luke, Han and Chewbacca to death by the sarlaac pit, a large man-eating alien which lives in the Great Pit of Carkoon. C3PO, translating for Jabba, explains that people who are eaten alive by the sarlaac are digested over a thousand years.

The trio are flown to the Great Pit of Carkoon on a skiff, while Jabba, Leia, C3PO and R2 watch from Jabba's sail barge, along with the rest of Jabba's court. R2 makes his way to the deck just as Luke is about to jump. However, Luke turns as he does so, and jumps back up onto the skiff. At the same time, R2 launches something towards Luke, which he catches, revealing to be his lightsaber. The startled skiff guards attempt to fight Luke, but he slashes through most of them, and the rest fall from the skiff into the sarlaac pit.

Luke then jumps onto the second skiff, while Han, who's sight is slowly returning, tries to defend himself. Luke fights a henchman named Vizam, while another called Lathe comes up behind him. Suddenly, Lathe is shot and killed by a skiff guard, who unmasks himself to reveal Lando Calrissian. Luke then kicks Vizam off of the skiff. However, a henchman called Vedain tackles Lando and they both fall over the edge. Lando grabs hold of a rope as they fall, but Vedain falls into the pit.

Luke jumps from the skiff to the sail barge and continues to fight through Jabba's guards. Boba Fett leaps from the barge onto the skiff to try and kill Han. During their final struggle, Han damages Fett's jetpack and it explodes, engulfing him in flames and launching him off of the skiff. He slams into the side of the barge before he falls into the pit.

Inside the barge, Leia sabotages the interior by closing all windows and cutting the power, plunging the room into darkness. During the confusion, she wraps her chains around Jabba's neck and strangles the crime lord to death. Leia then frees herself and climbs out onto the deck.

One of the sarlaac's tentacles grab hold of Lando's legs, with Han being the only one who can save. Han manages to get enough of his vision back in time to shoot the tentacle with a blaster, saving Lando, who he then helps back onto the skiff.

Luke and Leia take out the remaining resitance on the barge deck and take control of a large canon. Luke orders Leia to aim it at the barge itself, and then uses a rope to swing with her onto the skiff. R2 and C3PO manage to jump from the barge just before the cannon fires, destroying the sail barge in a large explosion, finally putting an end to the Hutt Cartel.

On the Death Star II, Emperor Palpatine arrives and is greeted by Vader. Palpatine tells Vader to make sure that his feelings for his son, Luke, do not cloud his judgement and affect his plans.

While the other rebels head for a rebel rendezvous point to attend a meeting, Luke and R2 return to the swamp world of Dagobah to see Master Yoda. Luke asks Yoda to complete his training, but Yoda tells Luke that his training already is complete. Luke is confused, but Yoda then states that by having completed Luke's training, his destiny is complete, and it is time for him to die. Luke watches sadly as Yoda finally becomes one with the Force. Yoda uses his last breathes to tell Luke there is another Skywalker. As Luke prepares to leave Dagobah and return to the rendezvous point, he is visited by his late friend, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan then explains to Luke his origin.

During the waning days of the Republica Galactica, his friend and student Anakin Skywalker fell in love with Naboo Senator and former Queen Padme Naberrie, and they were secretly wed. Later, Padme became pregnant with Anakin's child, and the couple were overjoyed. However, Anakin began to suffer hallucinations of Padme dying in childbirth. Palpatine, at the time Supreme Chancellor of the Galactica Republica, tap into this fear and exploited it. Palpatine then promised Anakin to save Padme from death if Anakin pledged himself to his teachings. Anakin, having desperate, agreed. Palpatine then sent Anakin, now given the title of Darth Vader, to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, where he murdered all of the Jedi within. Palpatine reformed the Republic into the First Galactic Empire, and declared himself Emperor.

Obi-Wan and Padme confronted Vader on Mustafar, a volanic planet, where Vader mistakenly thought that Padme has brought Obi-Wan to kill him. In his rage, Vader used the Force to choke Padme into unconciousness. Obi-Wan and Vader dueled across Mustafar, ultimately leading to Vader's near death, as a result of which he had to wear the Sith armour to keep him alive.

Obi-Wan took Padme to the asteroid Polis Massa, where Luke was born. Padme died shortly after naming her son. Obi-Wan then took Luke to Tatooine to be raised by his uncle Owen Lars. Luke asks Obi-Wan what Yoda meant by saying there was another Skywalker, and Obi-Wan reluctantly explains.

On the night of Luke's birth, it was discovered that Padme was carrying twins. Luke was born with a twin sister. Alderaan Senator Bail Organa, who was present at the birth, volunteered to adopt the infant girl to keep her safe from the Empire. Luke then realises that Leia is in fact his sister.

Luke arrives at the rebel rendezvous point, where they are being briefed by Admiral Gial Ackbar. Ackbar reveals that the Alliance has recovered leaked plans for the Death Star II, which is currently stationed near to the forest moon of Endor. The plans reveal a way into the core of the Death Star II, which the rebels plan to destroy in order to destroy the Death Star II. Most importantly, however, they know that the Emperor himself will be on board, and if they blow it up with him on board, it could cripple the Empire. The first step of the plan, however, is for a strike team to disable the shield generator, located on Endor itself. Han is assigned to lead the team, and Chewbacca, Leia and Luke therefore volunteer, bringing C3PO and R2 with them.

The team lands on Endor and discover a scout trooper patrol. Han attempts to sneak up on them, but steps on a twig and snaps it, alerting the nearest trooper, who punches him out. The scouts climb onto speeder bikes and race off to warn the rest of the Imperial forces. Luke and Leia pursue them, determined to not allow that information reach the Empire. Together, they manage to eliminate all of the soliders, but in the process Leia is knocked off of her speeder. Luke and Han become worried when she doesn't return and discover her helmet, so they set off to find her.

In actuality, Leia is found by a small Ewok, the moon's native creatures, named Wicket Wystri Warrick. The rest of the group are led into a booby trap set by the Ewoks and are captured. The Ewoks proclaim C3PO to be their god and worship him. They announce that Han will be the main course of a banquet in C3PO's honour. Luke forces C3PO to warn the Ewoks to release them unless they wish to face his magic, and then uses the Force to levitate the droid. That night, Chief Chirpa welcomes the rebels as members of the tribe.

Luke, having sensed Vader's presence on the moon, fears he is endangering the mission, and decides to leave the group to surrender to Vader. Leia follows him and tries to stop him, forcing to finally reveal that he is Vader's son, and that she is his sister. Leia is left in stunned silence, while Luke heads off.

Luke arrives at an Imperial docking bay and surrenders. Vader arrives to personally detain his son. Luke attempts to bring his father back to the light, but to no avail. Luke rakes up painful memories by mentioning Padme, causing Vader to ignite Luke's lightsaber and nearly strike him down. He manages to restrain himself in time, and has Luke taken to the Death Star II.

The next day, the rebel fleet arrives from hyperspace to prepare for the final assault, while the rebels on Endor set out to attack the shield generator. Lando is leading the attack in the Millenium Falcon. On the Death Star II, Vader brings Luke to the Emperor's throne room, where Palpatine tells Luke that he will soon become his apprentice, and follow the same path as his father. Luke scoffs, telling Palpatine that they will soon both die in the destruction of the battle station. Palpatine fakes fear, but then asks Luke if he is talking about the rebel assault. He then explains that he was the one who leaked the Death Star II plans to the rebels, so he could gather them in one place and finally wipe them out.

The rebels gain access to the bunker, only to have the Imperials waiting and are captured. As they are marched outside, R2 gives a signal, and the Ewoks begin an attack on the Empire's forces. In space, Lando's fleet approaches the Death Star II and realise at the last moment that the shields are still up and pull away. While they consider what to do, the Imperial fleet reveals itself and a huge space battle breaks out.

Han and Leia try unsuccessfully to get back into the generator base, but to no avail. Leia is shot in the arm and Han rushes to her aid, just as two stormtroopers approach from behind. Han pulls back at the last second, revealing that Leia was carrying a concealed blaster pistol with which she shoots them both.

On the Death Star II, Palpatine continues to mock Luke and then reveals that the Death Star II is actually a fully operational battle station. Lando also realises this as it begins to open fire on the rebel fleet. Admiral Firmus Piett observes the battle from the bridge of the Executor. Rebel pilot Arvel Crynyd's ship is damaged and he spins out of control, but he uses the last moments of his life to crash into the bridge of the Executor, killing Piett and several other officers, as well as plunging the Star Destroyer into the side of the Death Star II, destroying it.

Luke, observing the battle, is prompted by Palpatine to take his lightsaber and kill him. Luke finally gives in and uses the Force to pull his weapon towards him, but Vader ignites his own lightsaber and jumps to his master's defense. The two fight, and Luke kicks his father down a flight of steps. Vader begins to rise again, enticing Luke to jump onto an overhead platform. However, Vaders throws his blade at the platform and collapses it. Luke retreats into the shadows.

On Endor, Han and Chewbacca commandeer several AT-STs and use them to knock down the blast doors keeping them out of the bunker. The rebels spill inside and set a number of thermal detonators. Captain Sarkli engages Han in a firefight which culminates in Sarkli falling over a rail to his death. As the rebels rush outside, Han is shot and wounded by Jejerrod, who has arrived with another wave of stormtroopers. Suddenly, Leia unleashes a Force shockwave which blows the Imperials away, including Jejerrod, who is thrown against a tree, breaking his neck.

Vader searches for Luke, taunting him and telling him that his feelings and thoughts have betrayed him. Vader is shocked to learn that he has a daughter, Luke's sister, but uses this information to his advantage. He wonders aloud if Luke doesn't turn to the Dark Side, then perhaps Leia would. Luke finally snaps and savagely attacks his father, finally knocking him to the floor and slicing his hand clean off. Palpatine laughs and encourages Luke to finish his father, ascending to his place at Palpatine's side. Luke throws his lightsaber down, and tells Palpatine that he is a Jedi, like his father was.

Outside, Lando enters the Death Star II and makes his way towards the core. Palpatine, disgusted by Luke's resolve, chooses to finally destroy him, and blasts him Force lightning. Luke collapses to the floor, writhing in pain, as Palpatine mercilessly blasts him. Vader climbs back to his feet and stands next to his master as he watches his son slowly being tortured to death. Vader begins to flash back to his past, seeing images of Obi-Wan and Padme. With a final cry of defiance, Vader picks the Emperor up, but he continues to cast Force lightning, zapping Vader. Vader does not relent and drops his master down a reactor shaft, where he is finally vaporized. Upon his death, a cloud of dark side energy rises up and blasts Vader, badly damaging his suit. Luke rushes to his father side and drags him from the throne room.

An evacuation of the Death Star II is ordered and the personnel all run to the hangar bay, while Luke drags Vader to his own shuttle. As Luke prepares to bring him on board, Vader asks him to remove his mask. Luke refuses, as Vader will die without it, but Vader insists that nothing can stop that now. Vader only wants to see his son with his own eyes before he dies. Luke reluctantly removes the mask, and comes face to face with his scarred father. Anakin, now redeemed, thanks Luke for believing in him and tells him he was right, and his final wish is for Luke to tell his sister that their father died a good man. With that, Anakin dies with a smile on his face. Luke plants a kiss on his forehead and then pulls his body into the shuttle, and departs the Death Star II.

Lando arrives at the chamber at the center of the station and fires everything he has at the reactor core, triggering a huge meltdown. A huge fireball chases him as he flees in the Falcon, and finally escapes with a cheer as the Death Star II explodes.

Leia and Han watch the explosion as the other rebels and the Ewoks cheer. Han assures Leia that Luke would of gotten out in time, but Leia tells him that she knows he did. Han asks Leia if she loves Luke, and tells him that he will willingly step aside. Leia laughs and explains to Han that the reason she loves Luke is because he is her brother. She then kisses the wildly confused Han.

That evening, Luke returns to Endor and cremates his father's body and armour. Meanwhile, Lando also returns and is congratulated by Han, The Ewoks throw a huge party in their village, and all the rebels join in. Luke returns and embraces his comrades. Across the Galaxy, massive parties take place to celebrate the fall of the Empire. Amongst the planets shown are Bespin, Naboo and Coruscant. Luke spots the Force ghosts of Obi-Wan and Yoda watching, and they are then joined by the ghost of Anakin.

Following the end of the Galactic Civil War, everybody begins their new lives. Leia becomes Chancellor of the New Galactic Republic,  but is never too busy to spend time with her husband Han and their son, Anakin Solo. Luke rebuilds the Jedi Order and they are reinstated as the peacekeepers of the Galaxy. The criminal empires which plague the Outer Rim worlds are disbanded. A memorial is erected in rememberance of all those who died in the Galactic Civil War, the Clone Wars, and during the Great Jedi Purge. The final shot of the film shows Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, Lando, C3PO and R2 amongst others welcoming a new era.
