Development

Andrew Adamson, director of the Shrek film franchise, decided to make the film after the fourth film Mr Pip was made. Especially, he made his fifth feature Ryan Burke Adventures.

He hired director of Brother Bear; Aaron Blaise and composer John Powell to do the score. After story changes, it was the original story of Ryan who joins the kingdom but since the idea is too similar to How to Train Your Dragon so the makers changes their minds.

Other people he hired were Tab Murphy, Jonathan Roberts, Irene Mecchi, Noni White, Bob Tzuidker, John Orloff and John Collee. On May 2015, Adamson hired Don Hahn and Bonnie Arnold to produce the movie. But in the end, Arnold, after producing How to Train Your Dragon 2, has commitments during production so she left the project leaving Don to produce the movie.

Blaise was considered to direct the film but he left the project because of scheduling conflicts. Adamson was so surprised after seeing Mad Max: Fury Road, stated that he would reunite actors from Fury Road to the project. Powell would work on Jason Bourne, so he left the project.

The makers waited desperate times for a composer until Hans Zimmer arrive to score the film.
