Her life changed forever when she encountered BB-8, a New Republic astromech droid who carried information about Skywalker's whereabouts, and a Stormtrooper named Finn who defected front he First Order. They were hunted by the First Order, forcing them to escape from Tatooine on the Millennium Falcon with Han Solo and Chewbacca.

On Takadana, Rey discovers the lightsaber that had once belonged to Luke and Anakin Skywalker but rejected the idea that the lightsaber was a sign of her destiny. Rey soon encounters the dark Force user Kylo Ren, who wanted information about Skywalker's whereabouts. During the attack on Yavin IV, Rey witnessed Solo's death at Ren's hands and engaged the darks warrior in lightsaber combat. Rey, an injured Finn and Chewbecca escaped Yavin IV before it was destroyed. Rey ventured to the lost world, Ahch-To, found Skywalker and presented him with his father's lightsaber as a sign of the only hope the galaxy had left: the return of the Jedi.

Early Life on Tatooine

Rey was born eleven years after the Battle of Endor. At a young age, she was sold on Tatooine to Unkar Plutt. Rey would trawl through the junk fields of the Starship Graveyard which was littered with the remains of starships and other military technology from the Battle of Tatooine, in exchange for food portions. Plutt would also whip Rey if she fell behind on her quota. Rey learned that parts that parts that could be repurposed were the most important, anything that could not be put into another ships as worthless to Plutt.

At some point Rey made her home in a downed All Terrain Transport, Hellhound Two, left over from the Battle of Tatooine. Once settled into the walker, Rey salvaged working parts of the the AT-AT for trade.

When she was ten, she acquired a Rebel Alliance flight helmet she found while scavenging. During her time, she befriended scavenger John.

Escape from Tatooine

Scavenging a crashed Star Destroyer, Rey brought the parts to Plutt but was behind on her quota and punished with a whipping. Returning to her home, she found an astromech droid, BB-8. BB8 attempted to remove Rey's collar but she told him that she still wouldn't be able to escape from Tatooine.

Returning to Niima Outpost the next day, Rey was interrogated by Plutt on the location of BB-8 so he could sell it to the First Order. Plutt attempted to torture Rey but she was saved by Finn and Poe Dameron, who overheard she knew where BB8 was. Dameron explained that he was a sent by the New Republic to receive a map that would lead them to Luke Skywalker, a legendary that Rey assumed was only a myth.

Rey took them to her home to find it destroyed. BB8 was able to hide but John was killed by Stormtroopers. Finn and Dameron promised to help Rey get off the planet and she had BB8 remove her collar. Attempting to escape Tatooine, the group were spotted by Stormtroopers who were sent to recover the droid from Tatooine. Rey led Finn, Poe and BB8 to a shipyard attempting to commandeer a quad jumper moments before it was destroyed. With no other option, Rey led them to towards the Millennium Falcon where Han Solo and Chewbacca had docked. Solo and Chewbacca took the pilot's seat while Finn manned the gun turrets.

They form began to introduce themselves to one another, having not learned each other's name in the commotion. Rey and Finn realised the ship was the Millennium Falcon and that Solo was the famous smuggler who fought for the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War. Dameron also told Solo about his mission to bring BB-8 to the New Republic, a mission that caught Solo's attention once he realised the droid carried a map to his old friend Luke Skywalker.

Suddenly, the ship began to lose power and the group realised they were caught in a tractor beam. The Falcon was pulled into the cargo bay of a large freighter called the Eravana. The Falcon was soon boarded by the Guavian Death Gang. The group tried to hide in a compartment beneath the floor but the gang were wise to Solo's trick. They who took them out the Falcon only to encounter a rival gang, Kanjiklub. Both groups had a vendetta against Solo who had swindled them into loaning him money. Rey, Dameron and Finn hide in the corridor beneath the floors as Solo unsuccessfully tried to talk his way out of the situation. Rey pressed the wrong button and accidentally unleashed the monstrous Rathtars the Guavian Death Gang had been smuggling, whichr an loose on the ship. As Rey, Dameron and Finn ran from the beasts, one of them grabbed Rey and carried her away. Finn found a control panel that allows him to close a door onto he tentacles of the monster, severing the limbs and allowing Rey to escape. They reunited with Solo at the Millennium Falcon and escaped onto the ship.

After escaping the group gathered in the ship's common area where Dameron explained the map inside BB8 could not be accessed until they got to Yavin IV. Solo explained the story of why Skywalker had disappeared in the first place. An Apprentice-Kylo Ren-turned against the Jedi Master and formed the Knights of Ren, destroying Skywalker's attempt to rebuild the Jedi order. Afterward, Skywalker vanished, going off in search of the first Jedi temple.

The Force Within

Solo, the estranged husband of New Republic General Leia Organa, did not plan to bring BB-8 to the New Republic base, so he set course for the planet Takodana, where he intended to enlist the help of Maz Kanata, a pirate the collector who operated a pirate castle on the planet. As the ship approached the castle, Rey was taken aback by the lush green world.

Solo led Rey, Finn, Dameron and BB-8 to the castle, while Chewbacca stayed with the ship. Once inside, the arrival prompted informants both the New Republic and the First Order, alerting the respective groups that the fugitives were on Takodana. Rey and the others met with the pirate and told her about the map to Luke Skywalker. Kanta said she would not bring the droid to the New Republic because she believed Solo should, as he and been running from the fight for too long. To Rey's surprised, Finn told Kanata they could not win against the First Order. He left to speak to two pirates about exchanging work for passage to the Outer Rim Territories and when Rey pleaded with him not to go but he chose to leave the castle and head to the Outer Rim.

As Finn departed, Rey felt something drawing her to the lower levels of the castle. She made her way down the steps with BB8 and found a collection of ancient artefacts. One box in particular called to her and she boxed it to find a lightsaber. Upon touching it, she was immediately confronted with a vision of events she did not understand. She saw Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren kill many Jedi. The vision then transported her to Tatooine where she saw herself as a young girl being sold to Plutt by a teenager. The vision came to an end, she fell to the floor.

Rey was left shaken by the vision. Kanata told the young woman that the lightsaber once belonged to Luke and Anakin Skywalker, and that it was calling out to her. She tried to guide Rey towards embracing the Force and letting the light guide her, as well as take the lightsaber. Rey rejected it and said she wanted no part in it. She instead fled the castle. BB8 followed her and Rey told the droid to go back so Solo could help, but it was too late. Rey looked up and saw First Order transports and TIE fighters soaring through the sky.

Rey and BB8 returned to the castle where they saw it under heavy bombardment from the First Order. She noticed Stormtroopers approaching her position and fired on them, hitting twee Stormtroopers before running back to the forest. Rey told BB8 to go on without her so she could fight them off. She continued through the woods until she heard the sound of a lightsaber coming to life. She was soon confronted by Kylo Ren, who used his lightsaber to deflect every shot she fired at him. After several shots with the blaster, Ren used the Force to freeze Rey in place, threatening her with lightsaber while demanding to know where the droid was. He probed her mind with the Force but was forced to retreat when X-Wing fighters attacked.

Duel with Kylo Ren

Rey, Solo, Chewbacca and Finn took the Millennium Falcon to the Finalizer. They were confronted by Kylo Ren. Though Solo tried to get Ren to turn back to the light, the darks warrior stabbed him in the torso with his lightsaber, sending the tamed smuggler falling to his death in the deep chasm below. Chewbacca, engaged at the loss of his friend, opened fire on Ren but he stopped it with the Force. Rey set off the charges, destroying the shield generator the Finalizer was using.

Returning to Yavin IV, Rey and Finn were confronted by Ren who told them he had unfinished business. Rey attempted to fire at Ren with her blaster but the dark warrior used the Force to throw her away, temporary knocking her out. Finn, show as given Skywalker's lightsaber by Maz Kanata on Takodana, engaged Ren in a lightsaber duel but eh was bested by the Knight of Ren and left critically injured. Rey used the lightsaber to engaged Ren in combat and spent part of the duel in retreat, defending herself from Ren. The two locked sabres and Ren told her he was the one who abandoned her on Tatooine after stealing her from Skywalker. He was attempting to fight her to be his own apprentice. Rey drew upon the powers of the Force and moved on the offensive, delivering several blows against Ren but was soon disarmed when he chopped her hand off. A deep chasm formed between them, born out of the imminent destruction of the planet after Starkiller Base fired, so Ren left Rey behind, allowing her to return to the injured Finn. Chewbacca soon rived aboard the Falcon and carried Finn aboard, as Rey followed behind. The ship took off as the ground crumbled beneath it, and the Falcon and what remained of the New Republic retreated as the planet exploded.

The Last Jedi

Rey kept Skywalker's lightsaber with her and set a course for Ahch-To. After landing on one of the planet's small islands, Rey ventured through the island's ancient ruins and found the old Jedi Master.

Rey possessed a kind heart full of generosity and willingness to help other people in need. It was just willingness that led her to not only help BB-8 be free from Plutt's attempts to a squire the droid but also led her to help BB8 on its mission to return the star map it carried to the New Republic.

Powers and Abilities

Rey honed her skills as a scavenger in the junk fields of Tatooine. Rey developed a tenacity and instinct for survival. She developed skills as a warrior, with the ability to expertly wield a quarterstaff against those who would threaten her.

The adventure that followed her leaving Tatooine led Rey to discover she was gifted with the powers of the Force. She nearly able to defeat Kylo Ren in a lightsaber duel.

Hellhound Two and the Speeder

Rey made her home in the remains of the downed All Terrain Armoured Transport called Hellhound Two, a leftover from the Battle of Tatooine.

Though the AT-AT was her home, a speeder she stole was more important for her survival.

Tools and Weapons

Being a scavengers acquired many types of tools and gear necessary to survive. To be successful as a scavenger, Rey acquired the best tools she could, learning how to use them and maintaining them.

One of the most important items Rey carried was her quarterstaff.

After Rey left Tatooine and arrived on Takodana, she was given an NN-14 blaster pistol from Han Solo. In Maz Kanata's castle, Rey also learned that Skywalker's lightsaber was destined for her, as the Force beckoned her to claim it. The lightsaber was built by Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars and, after it was lost to Luke Skywalker during a duel with his father, it was salvaged from the depths of Cloud City. Rey finally claimed the lightsaber during her duel with Kylo Ren, and she carried it with her to Ahch-To so she could present it to Luke Skywalker himself.
