Directors Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, who directed Sausage Party were hired to direct it, with Tiernan's animation studio, Nitrogen Studios producing it. Sony Pictures Animation was set to co-animate it, but when it received an R rating from the MPAA, it was rejected by DIXAR, who co-animated it with Nitrogen Studios instead.
