Out of Life (人生から外れて, Jinsei kara hazurete) - stealth action game developed by Loviise.
Gameplay[]
The main character is a yandere girl obsessed with her "Senpai." Her sole goal is to eliminate any rival who wants his heart. In the main game mode, the heroine faces 12 "Heartbreakers" —one for each school week. If she doesn't eliminate each rival by 6:00 PM on Friday, she will confess her love to Senpai, and Kami's heart will be broken forever. The action takes place at the elite Erito Academy. The main difficulty is stealth: the school is overcrowded with students and staff. Students can disarm Kami, and the Student Council members are ready to use pepper spray at the slightest suspicion.

Difficulty: 17 opponents. The toughest retro mode. 2044 Mode A secret mode unlocked after week 10 in the main story in 2026. The player takes on the role of Kami Hana's daughter. Special Modes Mode Description Features Mission Mode Kami plays as a hired killer. You must eliminate targets using special methods. You can enable the hunter Morta for maximum difficulty. Nurse Mode Play as nurse Ami Buraddo. A story about revenge for her parents. Each murder increases the anxiety level at school. The mode concludes with a court case. Important: In Nurse Mode, winning the court case depends directly on how cleanly and discreetly you acted throughout the game.
Development[]
YanGIRL is an ambitious stealth simulator with elements of social engineering, created by solo developer Katherine Vance (Loviise). Despite the lack of a publisher, the project evolved from simple Unity cubes to a complex system with three timelines.
However, by 2025, the game had become less of a hit and more of a cautionary tale about the difficulties of indie development and a management crisis. Funding and Team: Since 2020, the project has relied on donations through Patreon and Ko-fi. Budget: When revenue exceeded $5,000 per month, surplus funds were donated to a fund to pay key staff (modelers and animators). By early 2025, the fund had reached $30,000.
Risks: Loviise emphasized that the project relies on exceptional volunteers. Losing a lead 3D artist or optimization programmer would have meant "a setback to development for years."
Critical Point: In 2024, the developer stated that a drop in revenue below $2,500 would force her to relegate the project to hobbyist status, condemning the game to perpetual incompleteness.
Development Timeline: From Concept to Scandal 2019–2022: Foundation and Early Promises Development began in March 2019. Loviise abandoned procedural generation in favor of handcrafting each "heartbreaker."
In 2022, an early version of Erito Academy was released, featuring a schedule system for 100 NPCs and a reputation mechanic.
2023: Escape to the Past. Instead of working on the main 2026 storyline, Loviise switched to the 1989 mode. Result: Within a year, all 14 opponents for this mode were fully completed. Reaction: Fans accused the developer of desertion. Skeptics claimed that Loviise chose retro modes because they were easier to simulate than a highly detailed modern setting.
2024: Cult of Discontent. Under pressure, a demo version of 2026 was released, featuring the first opponent, Eteru Kagayuki. Loviise spent the rest of the year polishing details and... secretly developing the "1968" mode. The community exploded: the developer was accused of deliberately avoiding complex work on the main story in favor of "convenient" side projects. 2025: A Release That Left a Bitter Taste. Under threat of financial collapse, the pace accelerated, but the quality declined.
By the time of its official release on December 1, 2025, the game was in an extremely mixed state: Era / Mode Status at Release 1989 (Uta Hana) Complete (14 out of 14 opponents). 1968 (Tsuki Hana) Almost Complete (14 out of 15 opponents). 2026 (Main Story) Failed. Only 3 of the 12 opponents are ready. The remaining 9 exist only as concept art. Results and Community Split: YanGIRL's story has become a textbook example of how perfectionism and a lack of focus can ruin a promising project.
As of early 2026, the community is divided into two camps: Defenders (#WeForKatherine): They believe a game of this scale requires colossal resources for voice acting, animation, and lore, and that one person can't "snap their fingers" to complete all 12 weeks at once. Critics: They point to systematic cheating and the wasteful use of six years of support. What's next? Loviise has promised to release a fifth opponent for the main mode by the end of January 2026. Whether this marks the beginning of real progress or another attempt to hold on to dwindling patrons remains to be seen.
