Nadeshiko dynasty mon

Mon of the Nadeshiko dynasty.

The Nadeshiko Dynasty is a line of Genjin rulers under the title of Tenno (天皇).

The Nadeshiko dynasty is one continuous line that stretches back almost three millenniums with occasional interruptions but no change of dynasty. The dynasty's legitimacy is based on the imperial family's alleged descent from supreme deities Zenno-sha & Kanno-teki via their eldest granddaughter, Shuyona Akegata-no-hime of the Ten'nyo, a daughter of Himiko, the daughter of Zenno-sha & Kanno-teki. Excluding some power struggles within the imperial family itself, this claim has never been challenged as a matter of course, and thus has kept the dynasty from being overthrown or otherwise replaced.

The Nadeshiko dynasty has ruled for nearly three millenniums, both before and since the founding of the Yamato Empire. The authority of the tenno has waxed and waned with the times and varying circumstances, twice in the dynasty's history being marginalized and holding little actual power. The early tennos of the Nadeshiko dynasty claimed to hold sovereignty and spiritual authority over all of Fuso, though for the last seven hundred years the authority of the tenno has been restricted to the Empire of Yamatai and its extracontinental holdings in Marlakcor and Maritymir.

Scion of the Nadeshiko dynasty descendant of Byosaki-tenno. Creator of Seishitsu.

First tenno of the Oda clan cadet branch and progenitor of the current imperial line of the Nadeshiko dynasty. His ascension as tenno began the Seifuku Jidai period of the Ni-Hyakunen Senso.

Continued the custom of the imperial family having no surname when he dropped his and ceded the title of daimyo of the Oda clan to a relative of the parent line.

The second decade of his reign and campaigns saw the invasion of northeastern Fuso – which Shintoki-tenno and his armies had not touched yet – by the Arslan-ruled Gergazard Khaganate/Lin dynasty in 2032ɪɴᴏ (3749ᴘᴄᴢ/4170ᴛᴊʜ). With local forces unable to effectively stand up to the Arslan hordes, a council of the local daimyo sent him a plea for help. Shintoki-tenno didn't hesitate and redirected his armies to face the Arslan, temporarily abandoning a central Fuso campaign under a truce with the local daimyo.

Shintoki-tenno's forces brought the Arslan Invasion to a standstill for two years, culminating in the Siege of Hansei (繁星の包囲) in 2035ɪɴᴏ (4173ᴛᴊʜ/3752ᴘᴄᴢ), where Shintoki-tenno himself slew Khundet Khagan (ᠬᠦᠨᠳᠦᠳ ᠬᠠᠭᠠᠨ), the Arslan ruler of the time, in a duel. The sudden loss of their leader threw the Arslan into disarray, resulting the first real victory for the Yamato and local forces against the Arslan forces. Within a year of the battle the Arslan were completely expelled from Fuso. In gratitude for answering their call for help, all of the regions and people effected by the Arslan Invasion willingly submitted to the Yamato Empire.

Years after, Shintoki-tenno's reign came to a tragic end when he was killed in battle by a stray arrow during the Siege of Umadake.

A female ruler. Daughter of Kagemitsu-tenno, born as Shiwase-no-miya Miki Kojo (幸せの宮秋影皇女/Miki, Princess Shiwase), she was enthroned following the Second Arslan Invasion of Fuso, yet was not originally intended to succeed the throne.

Before the Second Arslan invasion, her elder brothers, twins Bakufu-no-miya Mitsufumi Koshi (瀑布の宮光史皇子/Mitsufumi, Prince Bakufu) & Niji-no-miya Akikage Koshi (虹の宮秋影皇子/Akikage, Prince Niji), were fighting a civil war for succession, recalled in history as the Futago no Kyodai Senso (双子の兄弟戦争/Twin Brothers' War), a war that was interrupted by the invasion of Fuso by the Lin dynasty of Tianchao.

After the final defeat of the invasion, her elder brothers buried their old rivalry and passed the throne to her rather than fight over it again. And so, Miki became the new ruler of Yamatai after a fifteen-year interregnum and was left to rule an empire trying to rebuild from both a civil war and an extracontinental invasion.

Because Orihime-tenno never envisioned herself ruling Yamatai, she didn't know how. And so, she relied on the words of advisors, particularly the shogun, to get things done. Unfortunately her eagerness for advice inadvertently caused her let herself be manipulated by her advisors, namely the shogun.

Her relatively ineffectual reign from hanging on to voices from behind the throne resulted in a long period where the tenno, while still the de jure ruler of Yamatai, was largely marginalized and their power curtailed in favor of the Shogunate, similarly to how it was before the Sengoku Jidai. For three hundred years the power of the tenno was ceremonial at best and the shoguns were the de facto rulers of Yamatai, until the civil war known as the Shirayuki Fukkatsu (白雪復活/Shirayuki Restoration) brought power back to the imperial family.

Born Toyotomi Nobunaga, he was the first tenno of the Toyotomi clan cadet branch, also descended from the Oda cadet branch, and progenitor of the current imperial family of the Nadeshiko dynasty.

He was a great-grandson of Shirayuki-tenno via her daughter Mutsumi (六ツ美), who married out of the imperial clan and into a lesser branch of the Toyotomi clan.

Nobunaga was a retainer of the assassinated tenno, Odayaka-tenno (穏やか天皇). Nobunaga avenged Odayaka-tenno in the resulting civil war, the Akechi Rebellion, later becoming tenno when the heirs of Odayaka-tenno renounced the imperial title in favor of Nobunaga.

Dropped his surname and continued the tradition of no surnames in the imperial family.

Notes & Trivia

  • The years have the years of the Teikoku calendar on top and the Solramese calendar on the bottom. There's a 1717-year difference between them.
  • Tenno whose reigns ended before they died abdicated and retired.
  • Tenno who were given the same posthumous name as are prefixed in a few ways:
    • The first Tenno after is prefixed "Go- (後/later/II)."
    • Tenno further after are given numeral words: "San- (三/III)," "Shi- (四/IV)," etc.
  • Women are normally forbidden from inheriting the throne. The only way a princess can inherit the throne is if they are either the sole heir, if they prove themselves worthy of it, or the original heir apparent abdicates their position to her.
  • Mikado Keikenna (神門敬虔な) is a title that was part of the personal names of tenno before Shinotki-tenno to denote their descent from Zenno-sha and Kanno-teki, but they otherwise had no surname. They were addressed by it by the court both before and during their reigns. This title dropped out of use long before the Fourteen Kingdoms period. It was shortened to Keiken (敬虔) as the surname of the clan that no longer held the throne.
