Melancholy is the debut studio album by American singer Dove Cameron. It was released on May 4, 2018 through Republic Records. It was preceded by the singles "Beneath" and "Tongues". The singles peaked at number 18 and at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. Both songs have also reached the top ten on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. "Flawless" was released as the album's third single on May 15, 2018 and debuted at number 75 on the Hot 100, before peaking at number 20 on the chart and number 7 on the Mainstream Top 40.

The album received positive reviews from critics, who commended Cameron's songwriting conveying emotional maturity and honesty. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, moving 112,000 album-equivalent units.

Background Edit

During multiple interviews in which Cameron was promoting her film, Descendants 2, she teased that she was working on her debut studio album. Following the release of the album's lead single, "Beneath", Cameron interviewed by Zane Lowe on his Apple Music radio show Beats 1 and confirmed that her debut studio album was being completed. "Tongues" was released as the album's second single on March 9, 2018. Alongside the release of the single, Cameron revealed the title and cover artwork for Melancholy.

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show On Air with Ryan Seacrest, Cameron explained that the album represents "the emotional, more raw version of myself". She later mentioned that the album was built around the assumption that it "takes place in a confessional, where I air out all my insecurities and such". Cameron told People during a June 2018 interview that she had "always wanted to make an album that was personal" in both its lyrics and concept, including the album photoshoot.

"Beneath" was released through Republic Records on December 1, 2017, as the album's lead single. Commercially, the song has reached the top five in multiple countries, such as Australia, Canada, Ireland, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Scotland and Singapore. The song peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 3 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart. In the United Kingdom, the song peaked at number 10 on the UK Singles chart. The song was most successful in Scotland, where it peaked two weeks atop the chart and marked Cameron's first chart-topping single in the country. The lyric video was released on December 1, 2017, and featured clips from the song's official music video while the music video was released on December 10, 2017. Cameron debuted "Beneath" at Capital FM's Jingle Bell Ball on December 10, 2017. She performed an acoustic version of the song, supported by her backing vocalists. Alongside "Beneath", Cameron also performed a few songs from the Descendants franchise, "If Only", "Evil", "Better Together", covered "Genie In A Bottle" by Christina Aguilera and "Same Old Love" by Selena Gomez, and performed two unreleased songs titled "Normal" and "Grateful". Cameron made her live television debut on the January 27, 2018 episode of Saturday Night Live. She performed "Beneath" alongside "My Destiny" from Liv and Maddie. Cameron performed "Beneath" at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards on January 29, 2018.

"Tongues" was released by Republic Records as the second single from the album and was released on March 9, 2018. The song's music video was released on March 30, 2018, and was directed by Hannah Lux Davis. It was filmed in February 2018 at Grand Central Library in New York. n the United States, "Tongues" debuted at number 54 on the Billboard Hot 100, with 12,000 downloads, 10.8 million streams and 9.4 million radio audience. Following the release of its accompanying music video on March 30, 2018, the song bounded from number 45 to number 24 on the Hot 100 chart, with 15,000 downloads sold and 25.1 million streams in the United States. The song also set a new peak of number 18 on the Mainstream Top 40 that same week, before eventually peaking at number 8 on the chart. Internationally, the song reached the top ten in Belgium and Scotland. The song also reached the top twenty in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Cameron debuted "Tongues" at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards on March 11, 2018. The performance was named one of the best performances of the night by several critics. At the 2018 March For Our Lives benefit, Cameron performed "Tongues" with Ariana Grande, her longtime friend and labelmate. Grande sang a newly written verse. The performance took place on March 24, 2018. Cameron attended the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 20, 2018, and performed "Tongues" at the festival.

"Flawless" was serviced to mainstream and hot adult contemporary radio as the album's third official single on May 15, 2018. The song debuted at number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 following the release of the album. The song ascended to number 20 in it's second week as it sold 36,000 downloads, was streamed 17.5 million times in the United States and accumulated 9.1 million radio audience. This was caused by the song impacted radio earlier in the week, and due to Cameron performing the song at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards on May 20, 2018. The song's official music video was released on May 31, 2018. The song was more successful internationally, reaching the top five in countries such as Australia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Scotland. The song also peaked at number 7 on the Mainstream Top 40.

In the United States, on the day of its release, Melancholy broke streaming records on Amazon Music by amassing the biggest streaming debut of any solo female album on the service. The album also broke streaming records on Spotify when it debuted with 46.5 million stream, thus collecting the biggest streaming debut for a female artist's debut studio album. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, moving 112,000 album-equivalent units. The album was blocked by Post Malone's Beerbongs & Bentleys, which sold 193,000 album-equivalent units that week. In its second week, the album fell to number three on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 76,000 units. This marked a 32% sales drop from the album's first week of sales. In its third week, it descended to number five with 64,500 units sold.
