A lyrebetta in an aquarium in San Deigo Zoo Safari Park.

Lyrebetta is a species of fish that is native to California's Lake Tahoe. Despite its name, it is not related to an old world betta, which belongs to a very different group of fish, but is much more closely related to a rainbow trout. It is named because of its colorful scales, making it a very popular aquarium fish. It is highly endangered due to humans bringing in many whale species to Lake Tahoe, but due to the conservation efforts, people are trying to use genetic engineering (making the fish more tolerant to the invasive whales) to save this fish from extinction.
