Note: The feature sets of this upcoming update is a pure speculation so not all features described below are going to be included in the actual upcoming v2.x.x.x of foo_loudness_peakmeter component. Please lower your expectations or else you'll get disappointed about the update of this foobar2000 component.

Loudness Peakmeter (foo_loudness_peakmeter) is a foobar2000 visualization component that displays loudness, RMS, true peak, and other level-related audio features, developed by Crossover.

Options[]

Note: This section only covers options new to version 2.x.x.x of Loudness Peakmeter (foo_loudness_peakmeter 2.x.x.x) alongside changes to existing ones. And the new amplitude scaling (between linear, dB, and nth root) are derived from foo_enhanced_spectrum_analyzer 2.x.x.x and thus is not shown on this page.

Show graph

Whether or not it displays graph. Defaults to Scroll.
Available values are:
  • None: Does not display the graph at all.
  • Static: Similar to foobar2000's built-in spectrogram with "Static" scrolling setting.
  • Static (alternate): Same as the old version of foo_loudness_peakmeter (1.0.0.0 and below).
  • Scroll: Loudness graph scrolls from right to left.

Show level meters

Whether or not it displays level meters. Note that if everything else is disabled, it will always show level meters. Defaults to Enabled.

Show loudness meters

Whether or not it will show the LUFS bars. Defaults to Enabled.

Show balance/correlation meters

Whether or not it display the correlogram and pan meter bars. Defaults to Enabled. Note that on mono sources, it says N/A on both sides.

Channel configuration (upgraded from Mono/Stereo only loudness measurement)

Which channels are displayed in particular way. Defaults to All channels with Mid/Side.
Available options are:
  • Mono: Displays only one channel, which is after downmixing all channels to single mono.
  • Stereo: Display left and right channel even if a surround sound is played (which in this case, downmixes into stereo).
  • Mid/Side: Display mid and side representations of downmixed-to-stereo audio source.
  • Stereo and Mid/Side: Displays both L/R and M/S channels simultaneously after stereo downmix.
  • All channels: Displays all channels and loudness meter reacts to all channels.
  • All Mid/Side: Displays sum and difference channels for each stereo pair.
  • All channels with Mid/Side: Displays all channels and also display Mid/Side representations of each channel pair.
  • Pairs: Displays sum-to-mono version of each channel pair.

Calculate LUFS independently on each channels

Should LUFS measurements be calculated on separate channels. Defaults to Disabled.
Note that when enabled, the LUFS bars now display each channel instead of just one and the LUFS line on the graph display differently on each column.

LUFS channel weighting mode (only when not in independent channel LUFS calculation mode)

Which channel weighting modes is used for LUFS measurements on multichannel audio. Defaults to Standard.
Available values are:
  • Standard: Ignores LFE and apply a sqrt(2) multiplication on rear channels.
  • Include LFE: Same as Standard, except it doesn't ignore LFE channels.
  • Sum: Treat channels equally.
  • Average: Treats all channels equally and divides the result by number of channels currently present.

LUFS frequency weighting

Which frequency weighting is used for LUFS measurements. Defaults to K.
Note that anything other than K-weighting in LUFS measurements are highly experimental and it is not recommended for daily use.
Available values are:
  • None: Flat frequency response, sensitive to bass frequencies and prone to being skewed by DC offset.
  • A: Used in environment noise measurements, having stronger attenuation of bass frequencies than K-weighting and features a lowpass filter at higher frequencies close to upper limit for audibility.
  • B: Slightly stronger attenuation than K-weighting and having high shelf boost replaced by a low pass filter at higher frequencies.
  • C: Weaker attenuation of bass frequencies when compared to K-weighting and features a lowpass filter too.
  • D: Features a high frequency bump.
  • M: Used in Leq(m) measurements in movie trailers; stronger attenuation of bass frequencies than K-weighting filter and features a low pass filter.
  • K: Highly recommended and default frequency weighting for LUFS measurements, based on ITU-R BS.1770 standard.

Mid/Side channel arrangement (on all areas; the loudness peakmeter, graph, Peak/RMS metering, and stereo balance and phase correlation metering)

Which Mid/Side parts are arranged in a particular way. Defaults to Planar.
Note that it is only relevant for multichannel sources (including mono/stereo audio upmixed to surround via DSPs in the playback chain) like 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound as well as quadraphonic music.
Available values are:
  • Interleaved: Mid part is followed by Side part of M/S'd stereo pair. In case of balance/correlation meter, the L/R (stereo pan) is followed by M/S (phase correlation) and so on for each pair.
  • Planar: First half is the mid part and the second half is the side part of all stereo pairs. In case of pan meter/correlogram, the first half is L/R (stereo balance meter) and the latter one is M/S (correlogram).

Loudness meter[]

Show meters

Which LUFS measurements are displayed. Defaults to Enabled for all measurements.
Available measurements are:
  • Momentary: 400ms window K-weighted RMS describing a very short segment being analyzed
  • Short-term: 3 sec window RMS of K-weighted audio data denoting the overall loudness over a short period of time
  • Integrated: Cumulative average of perceived loudness estimates

Display LRA

Which way the loudness range (LRA) is displayed in a particular way. Defaults to Separate bar.
Available values are:
  • None: Doesn't display LRA
  • Area: Display as area for all LUFS measurement types
  • Separate bar: Displays LRA as a separate bar

Graph[]

Channel representation (upgraded from Single Spectrum View)

Which multiple channels are visualized in a particular way. Defaults to Separate. Note that global (not per-channel) loudness measurement are duplicated on each graph when using anything other than Combined.
Available values are:
  • Combined: All channels are superimposed into one graph.
  • Separate: Each channel has its own graph.
  • Combined and separate: The Mid/Side part has its own graph, separating from main one.
  • Pairs: Each channel pair have its own graph.

Level meters[]

Note: Configuration of level meters' ballistics are same as spectrum (especially with IIR filter bank modes selected) in foo_enhanced_spectrum_analyzer component. Also applies to phase correlation and stereo balance meters.

Velocity

Decay rate in dB/sec. Defaults to 48dB/s.

Show true peak

Shows the true peak on top of the sample peak. Defaults to Enabled.

Show RMS

Shows the RMS bar. Defaults to Enabled.

Show infinite average level

Shows the cumulative average bar. Note that it is not the same as Integrated part of LUFS metering. Defaults to Disabled.

Enable clipping indication

Whether or not the bar change its colors when either true-peak or sample peak measurement reaches 0dBFS line. Defaults to Enabled.
Note: Sample peak and true peak exceeding full scale are colored separately for each.

Show crest factor

Whether or not the crest factor is enabled. Defaults to Disabled.

Show infinite crest factor

Shows the ratio between highest peak since last reset and infinite average. Defaults to Disabled.

Show crest factor as

Whether or not the crest factor meter are shown as separate bar. Defaults to From bottom to top.
Available values are:
  • From bottom to top: Crest factor meter starts at bottom, going higher as the crest factor goes "louder".
  • From top to bottom: Displayed similarly to gain reduction meters in dynamic-range compressor plugins.
  • Floating: Display an area between peak and RMS.

Show crest factor meter as separate bar

Whether or not the crest factor meter are shown as a separate bar rather than being in main bars. Defaults to Enabled.

Correlogram[]

Pyramid display

Whether or not it displays phase correlation/balance meter in a similar way to Pan Meter section of Level Meter from WaveLab. Defaults to Disabled.
Note: When enabled, each side has its own state (especially when infinite decay rate mode isn't selected), hence why it looks similar to stereo spectrum analyser from NUGEN Audio Visualizer 2.

Scaling mode

Which mode is used for how correlogram/stereo balance meter is scaled. Defaults to Relative (ratio).
Available values are:
  • Absolute: Simply calculate correlogram values with "R - L" formula
  • Relative (ratio): Calculates correlogram with level-independence using "(R - L)/max(L, R)"
  • Relative (dB): Correlogram values are calculated with "20*log10(R) - 20*log10(L)"

Changes from version 1.0.0.0[]

  • NEW: Major redesign, now it uses hardware-accelerated OpenGL rendering instead of GDI+ for faster rendering.
  • NEW: Graph over time can now be optionally hidden.
  • NEW: Peak/RMS meter bars.
  • NEW: Stereo balance meter and correlogram.
  • NEW: Crest factor meter, roughly measures "dynamic range".
  • NEW: Channel weighting modes for LUFS metering can be selected.
  • NEW: Experimental selectable frequency weighting modes (A, B, C, D, M, and no weighting) for LUFS measurements.
  • IMPROVEMENT: Refresh rate for integrated loudness as well as loudness range (LRA) is now the same as display's refresh rate, but it can be opted-out.
  • FIX: Small/slow memory leak, resulting in stability issues on 32-bit versions of foobar2000 with this component.
