With Fisher looking for her, Boyd about to walk downstairs then a man grab her and attack her. He holds a gun to Boyd and tells the whole CIFB will pay, starting with her. Boyd is shocked to hear the voice but he hit her with a stone paperweight and pushes down the stairs. He then takes Boyd's phone, gun and badge before running off and leave Boyd to died. Bobby found the apartment and shocked to see Boyd and her head bleeding. Boyd tell Williams "Who is he?" before she passes out.

Boyd was taking to the same hospital when Griffith was, with the CIFB found out about the news. Boyd woking up in the hospital and told Fisher, Vaughn, Harper, Haynes, Williams, and Dupree she hear the voice before. Isabella Curry finds a fingerprint on the stone where the attacker hit her in her head. Lytar analyzes the fingerprint and it's revealed to belong to Ben Knox, one of the prisoners that had helped Boyd's brother Jake is his last stand against the CIFB years ago. Boyd had shot him and he'd fallen into the ocean and was presumed dead. With a face to their shooter, the CIFB starts searching again, with Detective Landon and Officer Yates joining Fisher.

Williams found out Knox stole Boyd's phone, gun and badge. Williams call Knox who he has Boyd's phone but shocked to found out it was not Knox who has Boyd's phone, it was somebody else. Williams found out Knox was only helping to get Boyd's phone, gun and badge and then Williams are shocked to found out the person who got Boyd's phone know Williams and say to Williams, "You are my enemy".

Alston shocked to found out about the person who was talking to Williams was not Knox, it is somebody else who know Bobby and tells him, he is his enemy. Fisher, Yates and Landon find Knox and chase him then arrest him for the attack on Boyd. Fisher and Williams asks Knox about the attack on Boyd. Knox told Fisher and Williams, he made a deal to somebody to get Boyd. Knox refuses say the name but call come back. Williams has to take the call and the caller tell him, released Knox on bail and he and Fisher can see the person who Williams talking if they not, he will hurt Boyd. Williams told Fisher to released Knox but Fisher refuses. Williams told Fisher, he don't wanted to lose Boyd and the person who call him wanted he and Fisher to meet him or he will hurt Boyd.

The CIFB was shocked Knox is released, and an angry Alston asks Fisher and Williams why they released Knox on bail. Fisher and Williams has to lie to Alston about Knox. But the text say "Thank you for releasing Knox. I wanted you and Sergeant Fisher to meet me in the old place when Boyd was a young child". The CIFB, angry that info was withheld from them, refuses to talk Fisher and Williams and they head to the place with the caller say to them. Fisher and Williams found out the place is the old house when Boyd grown.

Lytar, Haynes, and Clara Lewis, run a trace through the phone but it comes up to a disposable number. However, they do find out Knox had used the phone in several different areas including a shopping mall, and a waterfront harbor. The CIFB then sets out about to find Knox.

Meanwhile, Vaughn reminices about him leaving the CIFB and admits it was one of the hardest decisions he ever made, but he felt his growing family needed to be away from the dangers of the job. Lytar says that that's what spouses and parents often have to do for their families' sakes.

It's also revealed that both Haynes and Dupree have had daughters and named each other their godmothers, and that Fisher and Williams have married Ortiz and Boyd respectively. Also, Lambert talks to Hawkins about his departure from the CIFB. She says she can tell he misses being a detective and might return someday. Hawkins admits that he does sometimes miss the job, but says that he feels being a Fed gives him more ability to protect and serve.

Fisher and Williams, along with Vaughn who decided to come as back up for the sakes of his ex-partner and ex-superior, come to the location the caller told them. The caller is then revealed to be Antwan Morrison aka, "Ant Hill", a drug lord that Williams busted years ago, and whose son was killed in a shootout by Fisher and Boyd back in Season 14. Morrison reveals that he has ties to Alston's opponent in the mayoral race, alderman Thomas Ganz, and that Ganz has made millions of dollars in profits from bribes and drug deals. Ganz ordered the hit on Alston in order to secure the election, and gave Ant Hill permission to use Knox to attack Boyd for his son's death. He was not expecting Griffith to take the bullet successfully and the massive manhunt to find the shooter to ensue.

Vaughn, who is hiding nearby, calls up Roland and Ortiz at the D.A.'s office and sends the message to the CIFB of their location. Upon that, the entire CIFB, including Boyd (who is released from the hospital just in time), rushes to their location, getting there just in time to see the three detectives in a standoff with Ant Hill and his men. Upon their arrival, a shootout ensues between the CIFB and Ant Hill's crew, during which Lytar is shot in the shoulder while saving Haynes, and Ant Hill is killed by Vaughn and Fisher. In the end, Knox, as well as all of Ant Hill's surviving crew are arrested, and Ganz soon follows when his corruption is made public.

At the end of the film, the entire CIFB unit—police, medical examiners, specialists, analysts, etc,— as well as their D.A. office allies, friends and family gather at the Blue Crab bar to celebrate Griffith's expected recovery. However, M.E. Anderson gets a call from the hospital and then is forced to regretfully announce the tragic news that Griffith has died. At his funeral, the whole unit mourns and all the surviving members of his unit give memorable eulogies for him.

In the epilogue, Griffith finds himself in a slightly otherworldly version of the CIFB squad room. He briefly sees Elena Woods (whose murder occurred in the first episode of the series) and Boyd's brother Jake (sitting in the station's holding cell)  and heads into the station's breakroom to find ADAs Reuben Harris (who was killed by a sniper at the end of Season 16) and Marsha Meyers (who was murdered by corrupt law enforcement officers at the end of Season 2), Detectives Lance Carlson (who was murdered by a hitman at the end of Season 13) and Marko Crucious (who was stabbed to death in the line of duty at the end of Season 15), and Sergeant Owen Juarez (who was killed by a car bomb at the end of Season 10) all playing cards and having coffee and doughnuts. They all reveal that while the afterlife may physically resemble Earth, it lacks the worry that comes with living. Griffith joins them for a game of poker, but has one last worry when they inform him that the seventh, unoccupied chair is for the next casualty from the CIFB. Griffith asks if the chair is intended for Vaughn, Fisher, Boyd or one of the others, but Juarez tells him that there is no way of knowing who the chair is for and that it could be anyone. That being said, the six resume their game as the movie ends.
