Growing increasing reckless and despondent about his impending death, and choosing not to tell anyone about his condition, Stark appoints his personal assistant Pepper Potts, CEO of Stark Industries.
While trying to develop a substitute, Stark is forced to drop his research time when Vanko and his henchmen, Bruno Horgan, takes hostages. Vanko wields electrified whips while Horgan uses a laser that melts anything it touches. Stark dons his Mark V armour to fight them. Horgan is killed and Stark defeats Vanko, but the suit is severely damaged. Vanko explains his intention was to prove to the world that Stark is not invincible.
Impressed by Vanko's performance, Stark's Rival, Justin Hammer, fakes Vanko's death while breaking him out of prison and asks him to build a line of armoured suits to upstage Stark. During what he believes is his final birthday, Stark gets drunk while wearing the Mark IV suit. This is the final straw for U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes who dons Stark's Mark II prototype armour and tries to restrain him. The fight ends in a stalemate, so Rhodes confiscates the Mark II for U.S. Air Force.
Tony discovers that Vanko's father jointly invented the arc reactor with Tony's father, Howard Stark, but when Anton tried to sell it for profit, Howard had hind deported. The Soviets sent Anton tot he gulag. Stark discovers a substitute for his arc reactor and finds out Vanko is still alive.
At the expo, Hammer unveils Vanko's armoured drones, led by Rhodes in a heavily weaponised version of the Mark II armour. Stark arrives in the Mark VI armour to warn Rhodes but Vanko remotely takes control of both the drones and Rhodes' armour to attack Iron Man. Hammer is arrested while Happy Hogan goes after Vanko at Hammer's facility. Vanko escapes but Hogan returns control of the Mark II armour to Rhodes.
