"in your dreams" (stylized in all lowercase) is a song by American singer and songwriter Olivia Rodrigo. It was released through Geffen and Interscope Records on January 7, 2022, as a standalone single before later being added to an expanded edition of Rodrigo’s debut studio album, Sour. The song was announced on her website and via her social media accounts on December 31, 2021 and serves as a follow-up to her globally successful debut album. An accompanying music video for the song directed by Petra Collins was released simultaneously.

The song received critical acclaim upon its release, several of whom praised the "unique sound and dynamic lyricism", and achieved commercial success in becoming Rodrigo’s third number one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, also reaching number one in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. It received the nominations for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.

Background and release[]

Olivia Rodrigo released her debut studio album, Sour, on May 21, 2021 to widespread commercial success. Produced by Dan Nigro, it became Spotify’s most-streamed album of the year and spawned two number one singles, "drivers license", which spent eight consecutive weeks atop the chart, and "good 4 u", which spent a single week on top and later tied Whitney Houston’s "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" for the most weeks spent at the number two spot for a song recorded by a female artist. Sour also went on to score two additional top ten singles in "deja vu", which peaked at number three, and "traitor", which peaked at number eight.

On November 19, 2021, Rodrigo posted a picture to her Instagram account with the caption, "in ur dreams 💗🌸🥀". She formally announced the song on December 31, 2021 alongside a link to presave the song and preorder the physical disc of the single, which also featured a demo recording.

North America[]

"in your dreams" broke two Amazon Music records, including most first-day streams, and most on-demand voice requests with Alexa of a single debut on the platform. On Spotify, "in your dreams" opened at number one on the Global Spotify charts with 9.43 million streams dated January 7, 2022, surpassing "brutal" as Rodrigo’s biggest debut on the chart.

In the United States, "in your dreams" debuted and peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Rodrigo’s third number one single. The song debuted at number one on the Billboard Digital Song Sales chart, as Rodrigo’s second chart topper, with 30,000 sales (17,000 physical units; 13,000 digital downloads), at number two on the Billboard Streaming Songs chart, with 28.6 million US on-demand streams garnered within a week. The song’s chart position declined to number six the following week, then once again dropping to number nine, where the single remained for four consecutive weeks before beginning to ascend and eventually returning to the number two position for two consecutive weeks.

The song also debuted atop the Canadian Hot 100, becoming her third number-one in Canada.
