The Tonglu were a tribal people of similar ethnic origin to the other Wan peoples but had been culturally separate due to migrating away from central Zanghuan many centuries before even the Qiang dynasty. As Tianchao expanded it's borders westward, the Tonglu came into conflict with the empire under multiple occasions beginning as far back as at least the Chang dynasty but the tribal people mostly remained beyond the empire's grasp until at least the late-Bei dynasty. Under the Shu dynasty and the succeeding Zhai dynasty the northern portion of their homelands came under Tianzu rule. There were some attempts to reclaim these lands during the Four Kingdoms period, but the Kingdom of Zan thwarted every invasion. The Tonglu homelands and all the Tonglu tribes were fully conquered by the Xuan dynasty following the Four Kingdoms period.

Over the following few centuries, the Tonglu began to culturally assimilate into Tianchao until they resembled their overlords in all forms, yet they retained their ancient tribal traditions for special occasions. The Tonglu began to reclaim some of their independence as the Kai dynasty fell apart into the Twenty Kingdoms period, but full sovereignty was reestablished with the formation of the Kang Dynasty out of the collapsing Western Tan Dynasty during the Western, Central & Northern Dynasties period, followed by a period of full rule over Tianchao under the Zan dynasty.

Following the conquest of the Zan dynasty by the Xiyi-ruled Qiu dynasty, the Tonglu would not rule again until the establishment of the Gui dynasty one of the Seven Dynasties of the Seven Dynasties & Twelve Kingdoms period, but Gui was soon usurped by the Geng dynasty. While the truth is unlcear to historians, Xiangrikui Gongchen (向日葵功臣), the first abjaksan of Marlakcor, is believed to have belonged to an ethnic group that became the Xiyi.

Initially a rustic, almost savage, people, the Xiyi were a series of tribes of Wan ancestry long-isolated from the cultural developments of the mainland. Initial contacts between the Gao and the Xiyi were openly hostile, developing into war more than once as Tianchao looked to expand onto the island, yet the unfamiliar guerilla tactics of the Xiyi kept the Tianzu from gaining any foothold on Qiulu. A cooling of tensions resulted in increased diplomacy that saw the gradual transition of the Xiyi from tribalism to civilization.

Two of the dynasties of Tianchao, the Qiu dynasty and the Ting dynasty, were established by the Xiyi, the former as a conquest dynasty, bringing Qiulu under Tianzu control at last.
