Summary[]

Two suburban families decide to share the same neighborhood in order to get along but things turn bad when their new neighborhood is taken over by a gang of criminals who might be after the money that was owned by original residents.

Plot[]

In a suburban neighborhood, former police chief Al Wilson (Bruce Willis) and his wife Edna (Uma Thurman) are having dinner with their neighbors: former district attorney Tom Walker (Justin Long), his wife Sarah (Denise Richards), former mob boss Don Maroni (Thomas F. Wilson), and his wife Miranda (C.H. Pounder). However, they get visited by some guests led by John (Nicolas Cage) and his second-in-command Fox (Michelle Rodriguez). The guests act friendly and are welcomed into the neighborhood.

At the front gate, two guards (John Lithgow and Alice Braga) are looking up the lists but find the guests are not on the lists. Before they can call the police, the male guard is bludgeoned by Noir (Luke Evans) with a baseball bat and the female guard is stabbed two times in the abdomen with a knife by Blanc (Orlando Bloom), Noir's younger foster brother. However, Blanc comforts her and lets her know that they gave them no choice.

At Maroni's house, Mason (Derek Mears) and Hairy (Tyler Mane) pretend to be trying the alcohol. Miranda happily asks about what do they think but Hairy takes out a gun and shoots Miranda in the face. Before Maroni can react, Mason shoots Maroni's head with a shotgun.

At Tom's house, him and Sarah heard the gunshots but heard gun clicking from Pete (Ewan McGregor) and Mike (Michael Rooker). They find the two men pointing guns. They are killed by Pete and Mike via gunshots.

At Wilson's house, him and Edna heard the gunshots as well but Edna is shot dead by Harvey. A vengeful Wilson tries to kill Harvey but is quickly shot dead by John. However, Carlota looked uncomfortable by the death scene but is comforted by her partner Sky Cooper (Bill Skarsgard), who is also uncomfortable. John then plans to have Sky and Carlota go undercover as a couple and to make sure that the upcoming neighbors don't suspect anything. He then found a underground hiding spot in the garage and decides to hide there while the fake couple remain acting. They also hide guns everywhere and the other members decide to go into hiding at other places. They help clean up the mess and the fake couple then put their bags in their bedroom. They then sit down on the chairs and propose a toast to new neighbors. (the opening title says, "Home Invasion")

The next morning, Police Captain David McLane (Tobey Maguire) and his wife Penelope (Natalie Portman) plan to move to a new neighborhood for Spring Break to make a learning experience for their rebellious daughter Alice (Victoria Justice), who has been nothing but ungrateful to her family. Their son Andy (Levi Miller) likes the plan because he loves his older sister and wants to connect with her but she hates him for his kindness and thinks he's blind to the real world. Their neighbors Edward McCone (Ryan Reynolds) and his wife Rose (Rose Bryne) are having the same problem with their daughter Bonnie (Camren Bicondova), who is being a complete brat to her older and more successful brother Robby (Drake Bell), who is also going on the trip with the two families for Spring Break from college. Rose has a crush on Andy but always ruins it by being mean while Alice is crushing on Robby but he is disappointed in her for her cruelty towards Andy and how she treats her parents. Also, Robby is good at taking care of Andy and has a sibling friendship with him.

In the van, Edward is driving as David is reading the map to find out where they are. Robby is dismayed to be sitting next to Alice, who keeps laying her head on his shoulder. Andy notices this and decides to help by giving Robby some music to listen to, much to his gratitude. Andy is also sitting next to Bonnie but is feeling nervous because of her rudeness.

In the new neighborhood, they are greeted by Sky and Carlota, who Andy takes a liking to. Carlota starts taking a liking to Andy and even acts like an aunt to him.

At the beach, they have a barbecue party. However, two mean twin girls Colleen (Lily-Rose Depp) and Collette (Harley Quinn Smith) bother Andy and dare him to enter the abandoned scary house of mirrors or they're gonna convince people that he's a chicken but two kind hearted twin boys Jack (Dylan Sprouse) and Colin (Cole Sprouse) saw this and warned Robby, who agrees to tell the adults.

At the scary house, Andy gets scared and sees creepy people but is found by his mom and he apologizes for walking off. She picks him up and they leave the scary house.

At the beach, the mean girls are punished for their behavior while the boys were praised for warning Robby about it.

At night, the McLanes are having dinner but Alice snaps and claims that nothing will ever change. Andy tries to calm her down but Alice becomes blind with rage and accidentally hurts Andy. Realizing what she did, she feels horrible about it and tries to apologize but Andy tearfully runs to his room in pain. Alice sits in her chair and puts her face in her hands in remorse for what she did.

In Andy's room, he's calming down but was confused when he sees the middle house being visited by two men named Marcus (Samuel L. Jackson) and Chris (Walton Goggins). He decides to check it out.

In the living room, David and Penelope decide to have dinner with Edward and Rose while the kids stay home. However, Pete goes with them to make sure they don't come home.

At the middle house, Andy sneaks in and finds the two visitors talking about hidden cash. However, Marcus notices Andy and tries to kill him but Chris ends up feeling bad for Andy and betrays Marcus by shoot him in the head, much to Andy's horror. Noticing this, Chris notices him and comforts him but decides to ask for his help, which the scared boy agrees to.

In the garage, they dragging the body but the kid is feeling uncomfortable. However, Chris comforts him and promises to not get him in trouble but they are caught by Rook, who holds them at gunpoint. Chris tries to reason with him but gets gunned down. Rook holds Andy at gunpoint but then they hear a car horn and a car suddenly appears, ramming Rook to the wall and killing him.

Inside the house, Sky and Fox get alarmed and are upset to see Andy there but John sends Noir and Blanc to deal with the kid.

Back in the garage, Alice comes out and is the one who rammed Rook. Andy is shocked by this but Alice kindly calms him down and is sorry for scaring him like that. However, Blanc notices them and orders them to not move but then Noir appears and accidentally distracts Blanc. This gives Alice the chance to take Rook's gun and shoot Noir with it, killing him. However, she's out of ammo and the siblings start running outside.

Outside, Blanc on the top of the van and holds them at gunpoint. He then advises that the next time they have a chance to kill someone, they shouldn't hesitate. However, he is suddenly gunned down and Robby pops out with a gun, sarcastically thanking him for the advise. Bonnie recorded this and sends it to 911, who takes it seriously.

At the restaurant, the couples were having a good time but then get shocked to see the news about what's going on. However, Pete had enough and revealed himself to everyone as one of the bad guys but then gets shocked to hear that David is a cop. Before he can kill him, David and Edward both take out guns and shoot him in self-defense, making everyone cheer. As they interrogate him, he just sadistically mocks them before being angrily punched by Edward.

In the pentagon, the government gives the real names of the bad guys: the leader John is Thomas Burton, a British terrorist and one of both the CIA and FBI's top 10 most wanted terrorists in the world who was recently expelled from the Great London Syndicate for his sadism and greed. Fox is Carlota Garza, a former Mexican assassin who was part of a drug cartel but it was taken down by the government. Sky is Lucas Cooper, a former Swedish game designer who wanted to build a cool game but got fired for hacking into government database. Baldy is Mason Boorhees, a former Russian hitman who also worked for his country's government but was caught killing non-targets and was put on the hit list. Hairy is Mickey Criers, a former German soldier who fought for his country but sadly supported Hitler's views and was kicked out. Pete is Logan Wilcox, a former Scottish athlete who participated in his hometown's games but was caught cheating and got disqualified. Blanc is Lorenzo Caruso, a former Italian priest who ran a church but it got shut down because he was holding weapons there for rebels. Noir is Louis Bernard, a former French soldier who loved hunting but had been hunting animals and got dishonorably discharged. Rook is Leonidas Adonis, a former Greek bounty hunter who used to catch only criminals but also targeted innocents and was fired. Chris is Topher Marrick, a former Southern Union leader who committed racist atrocities but was kicked out because he was too dangerous for that group's standards. Marcus is Marquis Warden, a former African calvary officer who fought for his people but was dishonorably discharged for burning a prison camp down. They are highly trained professionals but they are suddenly after some hidden cash money underneath the middle house.

In the neighborhood, the kids were shocked at hearing that their enemies are terrorists but are upset that their fake neighbors were bad guys and the said neighbors told them on the radio that the kids should've stayed out of this. However, the kids refused to let some bad guys terrorize their neighborhood.

In the middle house's office, John is upset that his real name was revealed but still glad to have a reputation and that they know what he's capable of. He then warns the kids that he won't go easy on them because he hates children and the kids that are there just don't help change that point of view. He then orders his henchmen to get the kids.

Back to the kids, they smiled when seeing the police arrive but get upset to see the gate up. However, they get in contact with the adults and they assure them that they just took down 5 of them while the adults mention that they took down Pete.

Back to John, he angrily tells them that the kids better stay out of this or he'll kill them because he's hating children even more. He also smirked when the adults angrily threaten him and he warns them that this can't be Home Alone because he hired the best henchmen there is.

Back to the kids, they smirk and split up: The McLane siblings went into their house and the McCone siblings went into their house as well as the henchmen do split up. However, Alice tells the adults that she wants someone to tell her brother that she is sorry.

In the McLane house, Fox and Sky go to it and greet the kids with fake kindness but Andy shoots them with a bb gun, much to their annoyance. As they got inside, they slip on some toys and fall on the floor. As they get up, they go to the stairs but then Sky gets hit in the face with a bag of flour after stepping on a trip wire. Fox gets worried but then notices another bag and gets hit as well. She falls on top of Sky and they both blush at this but then snap out of it and she gets off of him. Sky gets angry to see that his glasses are broken and now wants to kill those kids.

In the McCone house, Baldy tries to open the door but it's heated and his hand is branded with a symbol. After cooling it down, he gets angry and goes to the back door but get a flamethrower blast on his head which he douses.

In the McLane house, Fox manages to get upstairs and starts to search for the kids. She then sees a door and smirks at this but when she tries to kick it down, she accidentally jumps into a laundry chute and falls into the laundry room, letting out a soft ow.

In the McCone house, Hairy goes to the basement stairs but slides down on frozen steps until he hits the door.

In the McLane house, Sky was searching for the kids but then stepped on some empty skates and skates down the hallway until he falls out the window and lands in a pool full of white paint.

In the McCone house, Hairy got into the basement and searches for a light but when he yanks a switch, a heating iron falls on his face and brands it.

In the McLane house, Sky goes into the kitchen to wash off the paint but it was an electric trap and he screams in pain before he gets launched back from it and falls unconscious.

In the McCone house, Baldy gets through the window but it was covered with nails and he screams in pain as he also steps on nails on the floor and screams some more. As he is slowly recovering, he starts going to the stairs but activates a trip wire and gets hit in the face with a paint can, breaking his nose.

In the McLane house, Sky recovers and finds an injured Fox. They show confusion at their current appearances but then decide to leave the house and head back to headquarters.

In the McCone house, Baldy gets woken up by Hairy and they decided to leave the house as well.

In the middle house, Sky and Fox are recovering but then look at each other romantically and finally kiss each other. However, the moment is ruined by Baldy and Hairy, who are both yelling at each other. An irritated Fox comes up behind Hairy and shoots him in the head from behind. Before Baldy could kill her for her betrayal, Sky saves Fox by killing Baldy as well. The new couple finally agree to forget the plan and leave.

In the garage, they activate the van and angrily tell John that they quit, which makes him mad. As they drive out of it, they get rammed by another car.

When they recover, Robby comes out and knocks Sky out with one punch. Fox gets worried but then sees Andy. She then gets out of the van and approaches him for ruining her retirement but then Alice taps her on the shoulder and as Fox turns around, Alice knocks her out with a rifle-whip. Andy hugs her and Alice happily returns it but then John has had enough and plans to kill them himself.

In the garage, John gets out of the cellar and searches for the kids but as he opens a door, his hand gets branded as well. However, he has tolerance for this but then steps on some hidden nails under the carpet, making him actually scream in pain. After angrily throwing them off, he gets inside.

Inside the house, he continues his hunt for them but gets a lot of traps like getting feathers in his face, losing his shoes on glue, stepping on some broken ornaments, slipping on toy cars, getting hit in the face with a paint can, getting kicked in the groin with a boot trap, getting spray painted in the eyes, stepping on some skates, and falling into a pool of mysterious liquid. However, this only leaves him angry.

Outside the house, the kids plan to open the gates but an injured John comes out and points the gun at them, wanting to kill them once and for all for ruining his heist. However, they just get annoyed at him for doing this over a dumb robbery but he still threatens them. As he tries to shoot them, he also joking says, "Yippie-ki-yay, motherf**ker," making them laugh. As he gets distracted laughing, he then tries shooting at them but they dodge and the bullet hits a belt that releases a cart. Before he could react, the cart hits him and launches him into the underground office.

In the underground office, John recovers and takes out his lighter. After he lights it, he gets eye wide to see the cart was full of fireworks and dynamite. He just sighed at his defeat and simply yells that he hates kids.

Outside, the kids watch in shock as the house blows up, killing John and ending his reign of terror once and for all. Fox and Sky wake up from this but then find themselves restrained as the kids smirk at them. However, they just accept their defeat and admit that the kids win.

Once the chaos is over, the gates are opened and the area is investigated while the surviving terrorist couple are arrested by the FBI but didn't mind and say goodbye to the kids while still kissing each other, much to Andy's happiness for them. The adults come home and reunite with their kids, who are celebrated as heroes. Alice tearfully apologizes to Andy, who forgives her and hugs her. However, a sleazy reporter (Ben Stiller) asks them for their thoughts but David is angry at him for endangering the kids and simply knocks him out with one punch, much to everyone's amusement. Bonnie claims that Andy was cool and gives him a kiss on the cheek while Alice and Robby start dating. The landlord (Jack Black) shows up but doesn't get mad because he admit that he would've done the same thing if there were bad guys. He then pays for the damages to the neighborhood and apologizes for what happened.

2 weeks later, Andy finally gets into his favorite sport and wins the game, much to everyone's proudness.

During the end credits, Fox and Sky are getting their mugshots but still get married in prison and are enjoying their new honeymoon together while accepting gifts from the kids and medical money for their injuries.

Trivia[]

  • Liam Neeson gave Johnny Depp lessons on using a perfect British accent to help him out with the role with help from Alan Rickman, who played Hans Gruber from Die Hard and also helped Johnny know how to play a cool main antagonist.

T.V. Tropes[]

  • Affably Evil: Despite being part of a terrorist scheme, Fox and Sky are pretty much the nicest members since they warmly greet their fake neighbors and actually care about Andy but still focuses on the job first.
  • A**hole Victim: After all the things he's done, John really does deserve all the traps and his own death. Same goes for his henchmen.
  • Bad Boss: John is still obviously this as he only sees his henchmen as pawns and doesn't save them from their deaths while only hiring them to do his dirty work for him.
  • Beard Of Evil: John, Hairy, and Pete.
  • Complete Monster: Thomas "John" Burton is a sadistic and ruthless British terrorist leader who is wanted by both the CIA and FBI for various crimes including terrorism and got kicked out of a previous organization for his horrible methods. He also has a strong hatred of children, teenagers, animals, and America. He first starts off ordering the deaths of original residents and then killing a couple to obtain their house because he's interested in the money that is hidden in their basement. When the kids start interfering, he has no problem getting them harmed and makes promise on having them killed for their interference. When his group is gone, he doesn't even care for them but is instead angry about his plans falling apart and finally decides to kill them himself after having his henchmen do all the dirty work for him. After suffering through well-deserved traps, he attempts to kill them one last time and cruelly announcing his hatred of them until his eventual downfall.
  • Even Evil Have Standards: A lot of people have this:
    • When the opening massacre happens, Sky and Carlota look very uncomfortable about it.
    • A terrorist organization also admitted to expelling John because they are also appalled by his methods and personal gain.
  • Hate Sink: The terrorists might be bad guys but are still popular. Instead, that sleazy reporter Ricky Pope doesn't even care about anyone but his ratings and endangered the kids by revealing their identities.
  • Heel-Face-Turn: Fox and Sky have this but still get arrested because they were just trying to escape earlier. However, they still give up and don't even plan to hurt the kids.
  • Karma Houdini: Despite being punched by David, Ricky never gets killed or fired but is at least hated by everyone for his actions.
  • Would Hurt A Child: John is obviously this since he hates children so much to the point of wanting to kill them.
  • Would Hurt A Girl: Alongside children, John also hates women and obviously mistreats Fox, who understandably hates him for it.

Sequel[]

  • Bullet Plane (2019 Movie)
