Hickory is a supporting character in Trolls World Tour and Branch and the Trolls. He's one of the Bounty Hunters employed by Queen Barb, and Dickory's brother.

Appearance

Hickory is a lime-skinned Troll with flat reddish-orange hair and stubble, and a yellow nose. His normal outfit consists of black lederhosen, bavarian shorts with suspenders and a drop-front flap embroidered with a yellow and red sunflower, and a black alpine hat with a brush. His skin, hair color and outfit are all matched by his brother Dickory.

In his Country Troll disguise, he dons a large white hat, a brown vest, denim dungarees and hoof-like shoes. Part of his hair is also styled down into sideburns.

His accent changes between both outfits.

Personality

As a Country Troll, he adopted a persona of a laid-back and relaxed Troll who deployed simple logic and observations, from pointing out to Branch the issues with his relationship with Queen Poppy to his belief that musical differences don't matter.

When he finally drops the Country Troll bid with Dickory, he displays much regret, having grown fond of his new friends. This makes him torn between the decision of protecting his Yodelling music and loyalty to his brother, or betraying his new friends, as he's shown to be hesitant in taking the Pop string from Poppy. Regardless of his betrayal and pretense to be a Country Troll, Hickory is very sympathetic.

He doesn't like Smooth Jazz, as seen when he sends Chaz flying after having blocking his ears with gumdrops.

Relationships

Poppy

Hickory told Poppy what she wanted to hear, an issue with being Queen that Barb highlights later on. From the idea that music didn't matter, to her Medley being rad, to even differences not mattering. Whether it was a manipulation part of his and Dickory's plan or by coincidence, he ends up contributing to the issue of Poppy not listening to anyone but herself. Since he seems supportive of her plans and points of view, Poppy trusted him, this in turn causes her to question Branch when he mistrusted Hickory as a sign Branch didn't trust her. This caused her to even trust him by pulling her Pop string out in front of him.

Hickory grew fond of Poppy's friendship during their time together, and even tried to defend her by telling her to run when Dickory showed himself. When she didn't run, he showed himself to regret his actions.

He was also impressed when Poppy used his gumdrop trick to keep her mind safe from Barb, who turned her into a Rock Zombie, but not completely.

Branch

Branch is mistrusting of Hickory, as he saw no reason for a single Country Troll to be different to all the others. Hickory doesn't respond with a returned hostility towards Branch, which is proven by his polite attempts at giving Branch advice regarding his relationship with Poppy.

Dickory

Although both of them are brothers, Hickory is regretful when he watches Dickory robbing the Pop string from Poppy, and is conflicted whether he should have aided his brother in the first place.

Skills & Abilities

He has most normal Troll abilities.

Music

Hickory can't stand Smooth Jazz, making him immune to the mellowing effects that Chaz's music has on other Trolls, thanks to stuffing gumdrops in his ears. Hickory considers his own niche music of Yodelling beautiful, though he's still capable of performing Country music. He sings with a smooth vocal.

Craftsmanship

Hickory was able to build a river boat quickly, showing to be handy enough to even offer the others coffee, which implied there were resources aboard to make coffee; though it's likely that this was only included for comedic effect.

Bounty Hunting

Hickory is a charismatic and patient bounty hunter. He and Dickory had staked out their target long before any other hunter got near Poppy, and not only stayed with her most of the journey without her ever suspecting their ambitions, even winning over the mistrusting Branch. Hickory's weakness is that he's much more empathetic than his brother. The pair are quoted in rumor by Riff as being more mysterious than Chaz, The K-Pop Gang, or Tresillo and his Reggaeton Trolls. Their reputation is the greatest of the Bounty Hunters, as Barb figured that they would be the ones to bring in Poppy.

Athletics

Hickory is an exceptional runner, able to keep his distance, pull a weight and outrun the Country Trolls' fast speed. Although, unlike them, he did show signs of fatigue.

History

Hickory and Dickory were summoned by Queen Barb along with the other bounty hunters to go after Queen Poppy, after she glitter-bombed Barb. The Yodellers didn't show for the meeting, but were still aware of their target. They infiltrated the Country Trolls under disguise, with Hickory being its front and head, and Dickory being its back end.

When Poppy finally showed in Lonesome Flats, the Yodelling brothers were a long ways ahead of them and their fellow hunters. They set their eyes on Poppy, who was travelling with Biggie and Branch. Hickory freed the trio from jail after Delta Dawn imprisoned them for alleged "crimes against music". This caused a brief, yet wild chase with Delta and several other Country Trolls in pursuit.

The four fleeing trolls flew halfway across a ravine with a prompt cartoonish pause in the air, almost immediately falling down the ravine and into the river, and thus successfully escaping. Having evaded the Country Trolls' pursuit, the group headed on. Hickory built a boat unrealistically fast to travel along the river, as it was the fastest way into the Funk Trolls' territory. Along the way, Chaz ambushed the group and put the Pop Trolls under a trance with his music. Hickory avoided the trance by using gumdrops as earplugs, the same ones that Poppy had gifted him as a showing of gratitude for saving them from the Country Trolls.

Hickory bystands the scenario, in which Biggie freaks out at the idea of bounty hunters being after them before arguing with Poppy, and leaving with Mr. Dinkles to return home to Pop Village.

As they proceed down the river, Hickory sings I Fall to Pieces and approaches Branch. He confides in him that Poppy's not listening at all to the points Branch tries, and fails to make to her. The moment is quickly ruined due to a barrage of bubbles encapsulating them, then being transferred by a beam to the innards of Vibe City, home of the Funk Trolls. There, they meet Prince D, the prince of the Tribe, while Poppy and Branch meet up with their old friend Cooper, who had left Pop Village to find other Trolls like himself. They're introduced to King Quincyand Queen Essence, the rulers of the Funk Troll tribe.

The Funk Trolls refuse to combine their music with the Pop Trolls to protect the Strings, telling them of the true history. When they finish, the Rock Trolls attack Vibe City and the Funk Trolls immediately prepare for battle. Cooper sends Hickory, Poppy and Branch in bubbles away from Vibe City. Hickory (and, in turn, Dickory) is sent flying in the opposite direction of Poppy and Branch.

When Hickory catches up to Poppy, she's on her own. She explains that Branch and her had a fight, which severed their friendship; Branch is heading back home. While she speaks, the trust she has in Hickory leads her to recklessly pull out the Pop atring out in front of him. This prompts Dickory to finally drop the disguise, as he seizes the chance to protect yodelling. There's a three-way tug over the Pop string, as Dickory tries to snatch it from Poppy, who tries to stop him, and Hickory is attempting to stop both opposed sides from fighting over it.

The pairs' yodelling, however, had caught Barb's attention. Hickory can only watch as Poppy is captured and her string is taken.

Hickory and Dickory are present in the audience when Barb performs for her victory concert at Volcano Rock City. They witness Branch throwing himself in the way in order to protect Poppy from Barb, who's converting all the Trolls into Rock Zombies. She continues by converting the other Troll leaders, then turning her attention to Poppy again. Poppy is supposedly turned into a Rock Zombie after a powerful blast, but it turns out she uses Hickory's gumdrop trick in order to avoid the conversion so that Barb may trust her with holding her String-wielding guitar. Hickory was impressed over this.

Poppy smashes the guitar to stop Barb, but destroys all music in the process, turning everything and every Troll, including Hickory, grey. Barb is distraught by the loss of the Strings and accuses Poppy of destroying everything they value again, claiming irony due to her being a Pop Troll. The attention is drawn to the Funk twins, who are able to make music despite the Strings being destroyed. All the Trolls realize that their music always came from within, proceeding to sing and restoring themselves back to normal. Hickory and Dickory are seen performing in Just Sing during the song's Country part. Troll Kingdom is once again united as one.

Hickory is seen again with the Country Troll disguise at the Pop Village party.

Trolls World Tour

Hickory is a ruggedly handsome Country Music Troll with strong moral convictions and old-fashioned values. He’s got a singing voice that’s as smooth as his saddle, and a reassuring touch that is just as gentle.

As the local mysterious stranger, Hickory keeps to himself, mostly—in fact, Poppy and the other Trolls don’t even notice him cautiously surveying the new arrivals from a distance when they arrive in Lonesome Flats.

But when a tense encounter with Delta Dawn takes a turn for the worse, Hickory sees that the Pop Trolls are in trouble, and he swoops in to save the day. Throwing Poppy on his back (and pulling the other Trolls behind him in a chuck wagon), he gallops out of town, and carries them to safety.

Poppy is instantly taken by Hickory’s act of heroism, and his charming optimism: "You may be Pop, and I may be Country, but Trolls is Trolls," he tells the queen as they set up camp. On the other hand, Branch is unconvinced of the altruism, suspicious of his motives…as well as jealous of Poppy and Hickory’s connection.

Toys and Figurines

Figurines of Hickory were released in various sets alongside other characters.

Trivia

  • "Hickory" and "Dickory" comes from the rhyme "Hickory Dickory Dock". In Hickory's case, it's also a play on "hick", a slang referring to an unsociable person.
