Born in Los Angeles, California on May 1994.

Hessa is a third generation Iranian-American who was previously a FBI agent, along with her older brother Tariq. Their father Safa, is a decorated Chicago PD captain, a rarity for Arab-Americans. She worked in the Denver FBI Field Office and had a good career until she was fired from the bureau for brutally interrogating and beating information a terror suspect in custody who had planned to bomb 16th Street Mall to stop the attack that would have happened the same day. After she was dismissed, Katherine subsequently helped her get a job as a DA Investigator so she can continue to work in law enforcement.

The Sullivans

Season 1

An intelligent Yale graduate and (non-devout) Muslim, Cohen is driven by her family's success in law enforcement, with her father and brother being prime examples. After her dismissal from the FBI, she felt cheated, due to not having any prior infractions beforehand, and believed that her termination was driven out of racism, due to the lead agent on the review board having a history of bigotry towards Muslims in the bureau. However, she realized it would be pointless to pursue action against it at the time due to the lead agent's level of power and connection, and since no others were willing to come forward. After her former college roommate Katherine helped her get work as an investigator at Denver's D.A.'s office, Cohen has since adjusted and now focuses her energy on helping the office make their cases in court.
