Henry Thomas Baxter was the 40th President of the United States, formerly the Vice President of William Gates. When Gates was murdered in 1982, Baxter succeeded him and served for the rest of Gates' term until 1984. As a result of the assassination, Baxter was constantly in fear of his own life, and decided not to run for re-election. The next election was won by Paul Hamilton. Baxter remained in politics after leaving office, but he retired from the public eye in 2003 due to his failing health. Baxter eventually died of natural causes at his home in 2010.
