A HawkStorm WG
The HawkStorm WG (commonly abbreviated as HS-WG) is a handheld game console developed and marketed by the HawkStorm Company. It was released in Japan on April 28, 2025, followed by a global launch in North America, Europe, and other international territories on October 19, 2025.
The console is the successor to the HawkStorm MX and represents the second generation of HawkStorm's hardware family. The device is noted for its high-end specifications, drawing design inspiration from eighth and ninth-generation hardware such as the PlayStation 5 and high-performance smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. It distinguishes itself from competitors with its focus on "pro-grade" mobile gaming, featuring a modular controller system, stylus support, and extensive cloud integration.
History[]
Following the moderate success of the HawkStorm MX, HawkStorm Company began development on a successor in late 2022. The project, codenamed "Project Wraith," aimed to address criticisms of the previous generation's battery life while capitalizing on the growing market for high-fidelity portable gaming. The console was officially unveiled during a livestream event on November 18, 2024.
Appearance and Design[]
The HawkStorm WG departs from the playful, two-tone aesthetic of the MX in favor of a futuristic, minimalist design. The chassis is constructed from a magnesium-alloy frame with a matte-black finish, featuring sharp edges and clean lines intended to convey a premium feel.
The console consists of a central tablet unit—the "Core"—and the detachable HawkTab WG controller system.
- The Core: The main unit features ultra-thin bezels surrounding the display. A distinct kickstand spans the width of the device's rear, allowing for stable tabletop play at multiple angles.
- HawkTab WG: The redesigned controllers attach magnetically to the sides of the Core. They feature a more contoured grip than their predecessors, a touch-sensitive central trackpad, and textured backplates. The controllers utilize "Hall Effect" sensor joysticks to prevent drift over time.
Hardware[]
Technical Specifications[]
The HawkStorm WG is marketed as a "portable powerhouse," utilizing custom silicon to rival home consoles.
- CPU: The device is powered by the HawkChip Z1, a custom 8-core ARM-based processor optimized for multitasking and sustained performance.
- GPU: Graphics are handled by the HawkGPU X10, which supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing and AI-driven upscaling technologies similar to DLSS.
- Memory & Storage: The base model ships with 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and a 512 GB NVMe SSD, while a "Pro" model offers 1 TB of storage and cellular 5G capabilities.
Display[]
The console features a 7.4-inch OLED display with a "4K+" resolution (3840 x 2400) and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The screen supports HDR10+ for expanded color gamut and contrast. A proprietary "HawkTab Touch" layer is integrated into the glass, enabling low-latency input for fingers and the included stylus.
Battery and Connectivity[]
The unit houses a 7200 mAh dual-cell lithium-ion battery. HawkStorm claims this allows for up to 14 hours of mixed media usage or roughly 4 to 6 hours of AAA gaming. The device supports 45W fast charging via USB-C PD 3.1, capable of reaching a 50% charge in approximately 30 minutes.
Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0, ensuring high-bandwidth/low-latency connections for cloud gaming and wireless audio.
Peripherals[]
Every console comes with the HawkStylus Pro, a pressure-sensitive active stylus that docks magnetically into the side of the device. It is intended for use with creative software and strategy games requiring precision input.
Software[]
HawkOS 2.0[]
The WG runs on HawkOS 2.0, a significant evolution of the company's Linux-based operating system. The interface is designed to bridge the gap between a gaming console and a tablet.
- Game Studio: A dedicated mode that allows users to create assets, draw, or edit gameplay clips using the HawkStylus.
- HawkCloud+: A native integration for cloud gaming, allowing users to stream titles instantly without downloading them.
- Backward Compatibility: The OS includes a compatibility layer for the entire HawkStorm MX library, enhancing older titles with higher frame rates and auto-HDR.
Launch Titles[]
The console launched with a strong lineup of first-party and third-party titles, including:
- Skyline Racers: Overdrive (Showcasing the 120Hz display and ray-tracing).
- Project: Aethelgard II (An open-world RPG utilizing the stylus for magic casting).
- Cyber-Tactics (A turn-based strategy game optimized for the touchscreen).
Marketing[]
The marketing campaign for the HawkStorm WG focused on the slogan "Play Without Limits." Promotional materials heavily featured the device's versatility, showing users transitioning seamlessly from playing high-fidelity action games on the train to using the stylus for digital art in a coffee shop.
In the months leading up to release, HawkStorm partnered with major tech influencers to demonstrate the "HawkStream Link" feature, which allows the console to act as a remote play device for high-end PC gaming.
Reception[]
The HawkStorm WG received critical acclaim upon release, with reviewers praising the significant leap in hardware quality over the MX. TechRadar described the OLED screen as "unrivaled in the handheld market," noting that the color accuracy and 120Hz smoothness made it difficult to go back to other devices. The addition of Hall Effect joysticks was widely celebrated by the gaming community as a pro-consumer move.
The primary criticism was the device's weight; at roughly 750g, some reviewers found it fatiguing to hold for extended periods without resting it on a surface. The price point—$599 USD for the base model—was also noted as a high barrier to entry compared to competing platforms. Despite the high price, the console sold out its initial allocation in Japan within 24 hours. Analysts attributed this to the strong brand loyalty built during the MX generation and the device's appeal as a dual-purpose tablet/console.
