Happy Death Day 2U is a 2019 American Slasher Horror film written by Scott Lobdell and directed by Christopher Landon. It is a sequel to Landon's initial smash hit slasher horror film Happy Death Day from 2017. Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard are reprising their respective roles and supporting cast members Rachel Matthews, Ruby Modine, and Phil Vu.

It features a new ensemble cast of supporting actors/actresses, including Anne Winters, Tyler Posey, Taylor Russell, Sarah Yarken, Suraj Sharma, Wallis Day, Kofi Siriboe, Shadi Mar' i' and Skyler Samuels.

In place of its predecessor's use of a Groundhog Day template, the film features a Back To The Future inspired set-up, featuring the return of the Bayfield Baby killer's costumed attire and introducing a new killer costume, also designed by the first's designer Tony Gardner.

The movie was released theatrically on October 25th, 2019, to positive reception and a box office success.

Plot[]

Following the first film, Kappa Head sister Danielle has broken up with her cheating boyfriend Nick Sims and is going on a blind date with Delta Leta Zhi fraternity brother Samar Ghosh. Walking through university campus trying to figure an excuse to leave a Bayfield Baby mask and attired killer pushes Samar into the path of an oncoming bus, before stabbing Danielle to death on the pavement just a Goblin masked killer appears across the road.

After news of Danielle's murder reaches former Kappa sister Tree Gelbman who is preparing for a birthday trip with boyfriend Carter Davis and his collective of writer friends, she stops by Kappa house and comes across uncollected things of hers, mailed by her dad that were part of her late mother's last will. Among them is a padlocked photo album that has been opened. Carter's friends arrange a surprise party for Tree at her and Carter's off-campus house to substitute for the canceled trip. Across the street, Delta Leta Zhi drunken brother Casper Koffin from Tree's philosophy class is killed by the Babyface killer, who chases the stumbling Casper throughout the empty house, stabs him in the chest, and pushes him down the longhouse staircase to his death.

The killer then descends on Tree & Carter's during the birthday party attacking Tree after her and Carter glance at the photo album; Carter is stabbed in the back. As the killer brought the knife down upon Tree, the Killer, Tree, Carter, and friends: Charmaine, Jett, Ryan, Douglas, and Dina wind up in 1986. The group ties up the killer and prepares to unmask him when a drunken guy stumbles through the front door; the killer escapes during the confusion.

From there coming across a Delta Leta Zhi Gregory Butler and his not-yet wife Stephanie determining to Tree and the others they have traveled back in time. At a diner coming across Annie Gelbman, Tree's late mother, working as a waitress to fund her college tuition. By night after following her, the group comes across another killer who tries to murder her but fails thanks to Tree's intervention. They fail to intervene with a young Gregory run over by the Babyfaced killer of the present, which time then reverts to.

In present-day 2019 however, Gregory Butler's death has resulted in his erasure; Stephanie is now a single woman in his job position at Bayfield University. The others reconvene, but upon doing so, they are whisked back to 87, and at the diner that night, Annie is attacked by the other killer who murders her diner manager Ross immolating him, and causing him to push himself into the turned-on deep fryer in an attempt to extinguish himself. The Babyface killer with a frying pan beats Jett over the head, killing him.

Returning to the present, Annie Gelbman is alive in this version but unstable and traumatized, causing her father to invest in work to escape the responsibility of care and affecting Tree getting into college, working as a waitress herself to fund her tuition. As a result of his death, Jett has been erased, despite Tree and the other's remaining memory of him.

Time moves back to 87, and the group sets a trap for both killers at Annie's studio loft as she prepares for her first date with Tree's father. However, the other killer sabotages the trap resulting in Ryan getting hung, Kendra impaled on broken stairwell pillars, and Dina being knocked down an elevator shaft to her death.

The Goblin killer reveals themself as the deceased Lori Spengler, who has an alternate version of herself preserved in the time rift caused by the various time loops and time travel. Annie is revealed as the cause, having been stalked by a similarly costumed assailant and, after coming close to death, utilized her ability of time manipulation to charm her objects to hand me down to Tree, to keep her protected. The Baby killer appears and stabs Carter in the chest before unmasking and revealing Douglas, killing out of jealousy and sadism. He shoots Charmaine but fails to kill her; as she grabs hold of his leg, Tree immolates him with a birthday candle and, using the album plus her necklace, reverts to the present and loops her birthday.

In the loop, she succeeds in reverting all of Douglas' killings, including Danielle, Samar, and Casper Koffin, calling in anonymously to campus security and having him apprehended. A tree burns the photo album with her other birthday candle and watches as a young version of her mother becomes her adult version, telling her she loves her before disappearing. The Tree then prepares for her birthday trip and spends a final moment with Carter after receiving a call from her dad, informing Carter her mother died of a heart attack in 2012. Arriving at her mother and her's favorite beach spot, where her father meets them, Carter proposes. A final scene shows Douglas escorted in a squad car, have the officers around him be killed by various babyfaced killers that appear and immolate him in a car explosion.
