Fuller House is an American sitcom created by Jeff Franklin and produced by Warner Bros. Television Group, which premiered on September 25, 2015 on ABC. The series, which is the sequel to the 1987–1995 television series Full House, centers around DJ Tanner-Fuller, a veterinarian and widowed mother of three sons, whose sister Stephanie and best friend Kimmy—along with her daughter—live together at the Tanners’ childhood home in San Francisco, California. Most of the original series ensemble cast have reprised their roles, either as regular cast members or in guest appearances, with the exception of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who shared the role of Michelle Tanner in Full House. The character was later recast, as Olesya Rulin took over the role beginning with the sixth season of Fuller House. The decision to recast was met with some criticism from audiences, though Rulin’s performance was praised.

Development on a sequel series began in 2014. ABC ordered an initial thirteen episodes on April 17, 2015 and ordered nine additional episodes on October 1, 2015. The series was renewed for a second season on March 2, 2016, was renewed for a third season on January 25, 2017 and was renewed for a fourth season on May 11, 2018. The series was renewed for a fifth season on January 31, 2019, which was announced to be its last in October 2019. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, production on the series was suspended before the series finale could be filmed. Discussions arose of scrapping the episode altogether, instead having the previous episode act as a series finale. However, ABC reversed their decision to end the series and announced on April 23, 2020, that Fuller House would return for a sixth season. The sixth season premiered on January 13, 2021 and ABC ordered a seventh season on May 14, 2021, followed by a truncated eighth and final season on May 12, 2022.

Though the series received a mixed reception from critics, it was warmly received by audiences and was awarded several Kid’s Choice Awards, Teen’s Choice Awards, People’s Choice Awards and Children’s & Family Emmy Awards. Fuller House also won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program in 2020. A prequel, Full House: The Early Years, debuted on HBO Max on January 31, 2023. A spin-off, tentatively titled Uncle Monty’s Sandwich Emporium and starring Adam Hagenbuch, entered development beginning in 2023 but was ultimately passed on by ABC. The successor, renamed and shortened to Uncle Monty’s, was granted a series order in May 2023 for a ten-episode first season under Netflix. A second spin-off, The House That Built Us, premiered on Great American Family on September 13, 2024.

Like the original series, the show is set in the same house in San Francisco, California, still owned by Danny Tanner. Recently widowed DJ Tanner-Fuller is a veterinarian and the mother of three young boys. After the unexpected death of her husband Tommy, who passed away as a result of his hazardous duties as a firefighter, she moves back into her childhood home with her father Danny. However, when Danny has to move away for work, he allows her to continue living there. DJ accepts the help of her sister Stephanie and best friend Kimmy who move in and take part in raising her three sons: 13-year-old Jackson, 7-year-old Max, and baby Tommy. Kimmy’s teenage daughter Ramona also moves in.

Book series[]

Books based in the Fuller House universe were revealed to be a priority for Warner Bros. and Scholastic upon the announcement of a global licensed publishing deal, in which Scholastic would be granted the opportunity to publish books centered around Warner Bros. properties and associated characters. The books would largely be aimed towards children between the ages of 8 and 14, and would be published beginning in September 2016. Each book features unique cover artwork, typically in the form of a photoshoot featuring the cast member whose character is being represented in the book.

The series includes the following:

  • Fuller House: Jackson These six books were written primarily from the point of view of DJ Fuller’s eldest son, Jackson Fuller. The series centers around Jackson as he enters high school which occurred during the series’ third season in 2018, though the release of the book series predates these events. Major recurring characters from the parent series appear in larger roles across the book series, such as Bobby Popko. The six books feature a continuous storyline, which each book ending in a cliffhanger that is later resolved in the subsequent book. The first book, Honeypot, was published in November 2016 and focuses on Jackson’s longing for Lola, who eventually becomes his girlfriend in the second book, Sittin’ in a Tree, only for Jackson to learn that she only agreed to go out with him once Ramona prompted her to give him a chance in the third book, Secret Seeker. This upsets Jackson, as he had previously asked Ramona not to meddle in his love life. The fourth book, My Best Friend and My Ramona, revolves around Jackson dealing with the revelation that Popko and Ramona have been dating in secret. The subsequent story spans the fifth and sixth books, focusing on Jackson learning that his dad, Tommy Fuller, had buried a treasure chest for him and brother, Max and Tommy, before he passed away for them to dig up and find in 50 years. He and Max, along with Popko, Ramona and Lola, set out to find the hidden treasure, lying to their parents that they are attending a sleepover. Future books were intended to be published, according to Michael Campion, but were later cancelled due to poor sales. Thus, the series concluded in June 2018.
  • Fuller House: Ramona These six books were written primarily from the point of view of Kimmy Gibbler’s daughter, Ramona Gibbler. The series, similar to the Jackson series, centers around Ramona as she enters high school, which also occurred during the series’ third season in 2018, though the release of the book series predates these events. Major recurring characters from the parent series appear in larger roles across the book series, such as Lola. Characters were also created solely for the books as part of Lola’s friend group, including Lisa and Aurelia.

Spin-offs[]

Full House: The Early Years[]

Variety reported on February 21, 2022 that Stamos was developing a prequel series centered around Jesse and Pamela Katsopolis, set in 1973. He described the series as a “love letter to the fans”. A backdoor pilot was later broadcast as the twenty-first episode of the season, "How Danny Met Pamela". ABC eventually passed on the spin-off in May 2022. However, HBO Max granted Full House: The Early Years a series order for ten episodes, set to premiere on the streamer in 2023. The series debuted on January 31, 2023. In February 2023, the streamer ordered a second season, followed by a third and final season order in July 2024. The series concluded on March 25, 2025.

Uncle Monty’s[]

In January 2023, Andrea Barber revealed exclusively to Business Insider that development on a spin-off series starring Adam Hagenbuch, Juan Pablo Di Pace, Jodie Sweetin, Soni Nicole Bringas, and herself had commenced the month prior. The Hollywood Reporter announced that same month that ABC was developing a spin-off series set in Uncle Monty’s Sandwich Emporium, a sandwich shop that had been purchased by the characters of Steve, Fernando and Jimmy in the fifth season of Fuller House. Further information was shared, revealing that the series would focus on Jimmy nagivating the day-to-day operations of a newly opened Uncle Monty’s establishment in Los Angeles, assisted by his niece Ramona who acts as a waitress. A backdoor pilot was produced as the fourteenth episode of the season, "Uncle Monty’s Sandwich Emporium". The episode was met with mixed reviews, and ABC passed on the spin-off on May 1, 2023. However, Max ordered Uncle Monty’s to series on May 3. Production was expected to commence in August 2023, but was postponed due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. In September 2023, Max cancelled the series and announced that it would no longer move forward. However, on October 1, 2023, the series was picked up by Netflix. Following the conclusion of the strikes in November 2023, series lead Adam Hagenbuch announced the spin-off would begin taping in January 2024. The series premiered on Netflix on September 10, 2024.

The House That Built Us[]

Candace Cameron Bure, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal during the production of Fuller House’s eighth and final season, revealed she hoped to continue the series for a potential ninth season, saying “I don’t see why it has to end. I think that, as long as we have kids on the show who are growing up and experiencing brand new things, we have stories to tell for years. I’d be more than happy to be on Stage 24 for a couple more years.” Upon the announcement of Uncle Monty’s, several outlets reported that Bure was pitching a series focusing on DJ and Steve, as they raise Max and Tommy, while Jackson and Rocki move into the Fuller house to start a family of their own. However, in April 2023, president of ABC Entertainment Craig Erwich commented on the series and said “There’s no doubt in our minds that Fuller House could come back at some point in the future but for that to happen, the Fullers need to be laid to rest for a while. There’s obviously been discussions of a series involving the Gibblers in development and we’re very excited about that.” Bure shared on social media, in May 2023, that she was still actively attempting to launch the as-of-yet untitled series though The Hollywood Reporter shared the following month that, according to an inside source, the project was “dead, gone, and buried”, adding “ABC had zero interest in sinking money into a less full version of Fuller House, which is exactly how Max viewed the series as well. One service suggested the series could instead focus on Jackson Fuller and Rocki Mahan moving in with her mother, Gia Mahan, and stepfather Matt Harmon, though Bure was not interested in the idea.”

Great American Family announced, on January 8, 2024, that a Fuller House spin-off series would premiere on the network in August. More details were revealed the following week, as Candace Cameron Bure released a statement in which she said “I take great pride in my role as chief content officer for Great American Family and, as we venture into producing original series, we thought it only made sense to keep the Fuller family’s story going.” The series was revealed to be titled The House That Built Us. Scott Weinger, Michael Campion, Landry Bender and Elias Harger were confirmed to be reprising their roles alongside Bure. Dash McCloud was later announced to be replacing Dashiell and Fox Messitt as Tommy. Bure later stated in an interview that she hoped to “bring everybody back at one point or another” across the six-episode season. Production began in February 2024 and the series taped its first episode on April 19, 2024. Andrea Barber, Lori Loughlin and Dave Coulier were confirmed to make guest appearances over the course of the season. The series premiered on June 21 and received generally negative reviews. The New York Times dubbed the series “a painful reminder of why things should end,” and noted Bure’s performance as being especially weak.
