The Caucasian wisent (Bison bonasus caucasicus), also known as the dombay or Caucasian bison, is a subspecies of European bison that inhabited the Caucasus Mountains of Eastern Europe and was once extinct since 1927 due to local poaching and hunted to extinction, but has since been brought back from extinction by SciiFii and reintroduced throughout the Caucasian Mountains of Eastern Europe, although some populations are found in Russia and some parts of Eurasia such as France, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Finland, Norway, and Russia, as part of the Pleistocene Rewilding project. Comparared to the lowland wisent (Bison bonasus bonasus), the Caucasian bison is more adapted to mountainous habitat. The Caucasian wisent is generally slightly smaller in shoulder height and weighs less, and it has shorter but higher hooves, more developed shoulder girdles, has skulls similar in size to those found in Kuban region, has significantly thicker and larger horns, less shaggy coats, and curly hairs on head rear. The Caucasian wisent is a social animal, living in herds up to 40 to 100 individuals in a single herd. They are vulnerable to a variety of predators such as Caspian tigers, gray wolves, Asiatic lions, hyenas, bears, leopards, etc. The conservation status of the Caucasian wisent is Near Threatened due to some habitat loss and historic poaching, however, thanks to the conservationists, the Caucasian wisent is a protected species and is making a huge comeback.
