The North African gray wolf (Canis lupus lupinus) is a subspecies of gray wolf native to the savannahs and grasslands of Africa. Their ancestors were a group of prehistoric gray wolves that migrated to Africa from Eurasia during the last Ice Age. They resemble the Mexican wolf, but larger, about the size of an Eurasian wolf. They are carnivores, feeding mainly feed on deer, zebras, quaggas (reintroduced), scimitar oryxes, antelopes, warthogs, sick/weak buffaloes, young rhinos, horses and red river hogs. Their main rivals are North African wild dogs. Much like most gray wolf subpecies, they mainly communicate by howling.
