False leapers are a species of giant rodent native to South American grasslands, scrublands, and deserts. They are most closely related to the kangaroo rats of North America, possibly evolving from the same ancestors or could have evolved from them. They are herbivorous and feed mainly on grass, leaves, roots, tubers, and cacti. They have the ability to rip cactus spines to feed on the soft parts of the cacti and the stems. They are about the size of a large domestic llama. They are listed as Least Concern as they tolerate extremely well with habitat loss, pollution, and a life in a city.
