Disney In The House: Wild Animal Expedition

Disney In The House: World Animals is a 2019 American live-action/animated safari fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Wonder Studios, Reel FX, and The Kerner Entertainment Company, and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The sequel to Disney In The House: Return To Adventure Camp and the eighth and final installment in the classic Disney In The House franchise, it was directed by Jeffrey Katzenberg and written by screenwriting duos Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone and Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris. Sarah Silverman, Ginnifer Goodwin, Dakota Fanning (from archive recordings of her child voice), Ed O'Neill, Frank Welker, Michael J. Fox, and Owen Laramore reprise their previous character roles from the first seven films, with newcomers including Fran Drescher, Will Arnett, Annaleigh Ashford, T.J. Miller, Sterling K. Brown, Rihanna, Rupert Grint, Clive Owen, Drew Van Acker, and Julia Roberts.

The film was released theatrically in the United States on December 23, 2019 with mixed-to-positive critical reception. It was a box office bomb, grossing $203 million worldwide on a $200 million budget. Financially, this resulted in the closure of Walt Disney Wonder Studios. A theatrical Disney In The House reboot series was acquired by Owen Laramore Entertainment shortly afterwards, starting with a 2020 theatrical reboot film.

Plot

Vanellope von Scwheetz, Judy Hopps,Beth Pierce, Hank, Iggy, Mr. Ziploc, and Lawrence Pierce are a happy family, doing things together such as fishing, reading books, watching movies, playing games in the park, and bowling. One night, they see a comet coming. The Disneyville citizens race to safety, and Vanellope intercepts the comet, which reveals Spide, the queen of the Spider Monkeys who intends to destroy the Three Habitats (the Savanna, Rain Forest and Tropics, and Polar Regions) and let her tribe reign supreme.

Vanellope, Judy, Beth, Hank, Iggy, Mr. Ziploc, and Lawrence head to Earth and board a boat. A violent storm crashes the boat and separates Vanellope from her friends. She crashes onto a island and reunites with them, but they have no idea of how to find the Savanna until two crabs explain they are in the Savanna already, much to their shock. Lion, Giraffe, and Elephant are looking for their antelope to which Vanellope makes a deal with them: If Iggy finds the herd, she will take them on the boat. A python attacks the herd, but Vanellope and Lion manage to protect it. Lion tells Vanellope there is no law saying the past can happen again in the future.

In the Rain Forest and Tropics, Vanellope, Judy, Beth, Hank, Iggy, Mr. Ziploc, Lawrence, Lion, Giraffe, and Elephant collect Monkey and Parrot and see a shocking evidence: Monkey's house has been ripped to shreds. They question Jaguar, and she explains that Spide turned her brother savage. True to form, Jaguar's brother chases Vanellope, Judy, Beth, Hank, Iggy, Mr. Ziploc, Lawrence, Lion, Giraffe, Elephant, Jaguar, Monkey and Parrot out of the Rain Forest and Tropics and into a glass silo. As the silo fills up with water, they escape. After reaching the Polar Regions, Beth gets cold, and they warm her up by a fire, drawing the attention of Seal and Polar Bear. Penguin has been on the boat the entire time they were in the Polar Regions. On the boat, Vanellope, Judy, Beth, Hank, Iggy, Mr. Ziploc, Lawrence, and the animals celebrate their victory and head onward to Spide's lair.

Spide kidnaps everyone and takes them inside her lair. She was banished from the wild years ago and she locks them up in order to terminate them as revenge for her banishment. Vanellope frees herself, puts on a parachute, and jumps down to safety. Beth assumes Vanellope died, but is given a message that she is still alive. Since Spide's evil plan involved hypnotizing the other Spider Monkeys to make sure they are in charge. The only way to do so is destroy all wild animals. Beth goes to find Vanellope but is intercepted by Spide. Lawrence frees his sister, and Spide angrily turns herself into an enormous monster. Vanellope steals Spide's lighting blaster and aims a blast of lightning at Spide, zapping her. She falls backwards beneath the sea and disintegrates into a gelatinous mass. This in turn causes the other Spider Monkeys to be released from the now-broken spell.

Vanellope and Beth embrace, and the Spider Monkeys praise Vanellope for saving them, ultimately restoring peace to the Three Habitats. Vanellope, Judy, Beth, Hank, Iggy, Mr. Ziploc, and Lawrence head back to Disneyville and spend quality time on their new couch with room for them all. In a voice-over, Beth says, "Every story has an end, but in life, every ending is just a new beginning".

Box office

The film opened on December 23, 2019, and grossed $100 million in the United States and Canada, and $103 million in other territories. It ended its theatrical run on February 14, 2020, having to have grossed $203 million worldwide. Produced on a $200 million budget, it failed at the box office, which resulted in a write-down of 100 million that caused the closure of Walt Disney Wonder Studios.

Critical response

The film has a 66% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 135 reviews. The site's consensus reads, "Disney In The House: World Animals may not live up to any of its predecessors, but it's still a laugh-out-loud comedy". Metacritic calculated a score of 60 out of 100 based on 32 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film a grade of "A-" on an A+ to F scale.

Bilge Ebiri of Vulture gave the film four stars, calling it the "ultimate safari film of the holidays". Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun Times gave the film "One Thumb Up and One Thumb Down". Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post gave the film a mixed review, saying, "It may an inconsistent conclusion of this series, but it is still one of the best films during Walt Disney Wonder Studios' years". Antonio Quirke of London Evening Standard considered the film to be better than Disney In The House: Christmas and commended the performance of Will Arnett as Lion.
