Digimon: The Battle for Earth is a Japanese-American science fiction fantasy action film directed by Nacho Vigalondo and written and produced by Drew Gars and Vigalondo, which is based on the anime of the same name. This is the sequel to the film Digimon and Digimon: The Dark Network and it is the third installment of the live action Digimon film series. The film stars an ensemble cast featuring Ansel Elgort, Josh Hutcherson, Bella Thorne, Liana Liberato, Asa Butterfield, Robert Sheehan, Ty Simpkins, Joey King, Guy Pearce, Tom Cruise, Liam Neeson, Jennifer Garner, Ken Watanabe, Simon Pegg, Genevieve Gaunt, Zach Woods, Samuel L. Jackson, Craig T. Nelson, Orla Brady, David Harbour, Elizabeth Marvel, Michael Ironside, Anna Kendrick, Dan Aykroyd and Patrick Stewart.

Plot

A year after their second adventure in the Digital World, the DigiDestined have moved on with their lives. But they recieve a message from Gennai that reveal that there's an eighth DigiDestined and that an evil Digimon named Myotismon and his army have arrived in the real world to find him/her. They decide to find the Eighth member before Myotismon does. Meanwhile, Myotismon presence causes the apparent death of the President of the United States, so the goverment takes action into tracking him down.

Synopsis

In a castle in the Digital World, the vampire Digimon Myotismon (Guy Pearce) is preparing is about to depart for the real world through a legendary door, where he had learned of a prophecy that there is an Eighth DigiDestined member, so he plans on going to the real world and kill the Eighth DigiDestined.

On Earth, at the international government agency D.A.T.S., computer scientist Laurel Walsh (Orla Brady) has detected an unknown digital object on the highway of cyberspace, She and her assistant Sara Jean Aubrey (Ellie Kendrick) head to the director of D.A.T.S. Satsuma Rentarō (Ken Watanabe)

Production

During production on Digimon 2, executive producer Jeff Nimoy announced that there will be a third of the live action Digimon film series. Director Nacho Vigalondo would to direct the film.

Simon Pegg and Dan Aykroyd have returned to reprise their roles from the first film. Gars stated that Pegg will receive a larger role in the film. It was announced that Tom Cruise would star as a lead supporting role in the film, while Liam Neeson, Orla Brady and Genevieve Gaunt were in early talks to join the cast of the film. On March, Zach Woods was also in final talks to join the film and to play seventh and final supporting role. On April, Jennifer Garner joined the film to star as the First Lady to Cruise's President Oliver. Cruise will play as U.S. president Oliver who teams up with the DigiDestined to save the planet. Gaunt and Brady will play scientists who detect Myotismon coming to earth, Neeson will be U.S. Vice President Loomis and Woods will play a cowardly government agent. On July, Anna Kendrick was added to the cast of the film to play Carol Williams, a woman whose the reason Myotismon's on earth. Ken Watanabe joined the cast of the film to play Satsuma Rentarō, the head of D.A.T.S.

Aside from the human characters, Australian actor Guy Pearce was casted as the film's main antagonist, Myotismon. Actor Chris Pine joined the film as the voice of Wizardmon.

Industrial Light & Magic was chosen to create the visual effects for the first film and the second film. Hongo and Gars hired Oscar winners John Knoll and Hal T. Hickel, both known for their work on the Star Wars prequel trilogy and the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Legacy Effects was hired to do the special and practical effects on the film. Shane Mahan, known for creating the armored suits for Iron Man, was hired on as effects supervisor. John Rosengrant was also brought in for his work on Real Steel. Oscar winner Clay Pinney, known for his work on Independence Day and Star Trek, was also brought on board. Hybride Technologies, a division of Ubisoft, and Rodeo FX also contributed to the visual effects music: hero by skrillet and digimon theme song. Some of the practical creature effect were provided by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

Trivia

  • The running time is 155 minutes.
  • The film is rated PG-13 for action violence and language.
  • The film is distributed by Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures, while being produced by Saban Films and Toei Company.
  • In the anime franchise, DATS stood for Digital Accidental Tactics Squad, but the film, it was changed to stand for Digital Advanced Tactics Service.
  • Pearce, Cudmore, Rose, Jo and Mears were the only actors in Digimon roles that were not in motion capture, they were put in make-up and costume.
  • James Gandolfini was originally set to play Colonel Miles, but he sadly died of a heart attack on June 19, 2013. So the role went to Samuel L. Jackson.
