Dark Web is a 2020 American supervillain horror-comedy film starring Asa Butterfield as the titular character. It also stars Debby Ryan, Lucas Till, Dylan Minnette, Bella Thorne, Dave Franco, Emma Roberts, and Jenna Ortega.
Summary[]
Similar to Brightburn, this film is a horror take on Marvel's Spider-Man where a bullied teenager gets powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider but instead of using them to help people, he starts snap from the abuse he's put through and uses his powers to take revenge on those who had wronged him.
Plot[]
The film begins with our protagonist Patton Parnel (Asa Butterfield) narrating his life so far: His parents were Hydra agents who got killed by S.H.E.I.L.D., he's forced to live with his abusive Uncle Ted (Jeremy Davis) and Aunt Paige (Nancy Kyes), he's bullied at school by quarterback Dash Johnson (Lucas Till) to the point of being suicide baited, and even his teachers or the adults never help him out but still gets along with his younger cousin/adopted little sister Terra (Jenna Ortega), has childhood friends named Kenny Ryder (Dylan Minnette) and Mara Jones (Bella Thorne), and even more, he reminds us that this terrible life will change very soon on a certain 1st day that he's narrating this.
When he was about to come home from school, he is approached by his toxic ex-girlfriend Sara Jade (Debby Ryan) to help her break into someplace but showed no interest in being with her until he heard about seeing spiders, much to her dismay and annoyance.
At the lab, they managed to successfully break in but Patton only shows interest in the spiders and even takes pictures of them out of fondness for how great they look, which she didn't care about but instead proceeds to try and forcibly kiss him without any care of him being obviously uncomfortable over it.
Fortunately, security interrupted her in time but she still selfishly pushed Patton onto the containers to save her own skin and yet he recovered quickly enough to flee as well, being smug to see the cameras only noticing her because he cut off footage of himself being on them at all.
As he sees the guards all over the place, he sees one of the spiders on his hand and it bites him, causing him to fling it off in pain but unaware of its DNA mixing with his right now.
On his way home, he is already starting to get sick from the DNA transfer but then suddenly gets hit by a car and when the driver Tyler Sampson (Joshua Ballard) gets out to check on him, he suddenly tries to rob him instead of helping them.
However, Patton somehow stops him via pushing him into a wall with crazy strength but instead of worrying about that, he continues going home and leaves the thief near the wall with a blood print on it.
At the house, he sees his uncle scolding him for being late but Patton asks what he's late for, which the drunk uncle decides to drop the subject and go back to watching T.V.
Outside the house, he was taking out the trash but saw Sara being scolded by her parents and yet didn't care at all due to what she had done to him earlier.
Of course, she ended up seeing him outside and attempted to fake an apology just to deceive but due to experience with her, he wasn't easily fooled and decided to angrily reject her apologized while not caring about angry reaction to this.
Before he goes to his room for sleep, he sees Terra crying and reveals that she's being abused as well but he manages to cheer her up via hugging her and singing a lullaby to her, which helps her fall asleep.
In bed, he starts getting sick again since the transfer process is still very unpleasant and tries to sleep this off but he still feels the effects in his sleep for a bit.
The next morning, he wakes up feeling better again but gets shocked to find that he doesn't need his glasses anymore and that he has gained some strength from the spider bite, although he takes a liking to it.
However, he hears screaming downstairs and runs down to find his uncle whipping Terra with a belt but when he's threatened into staying out of this, he still stands up for her and manages to knock his uncle out with a slight push.
Despite his shock at this, he snaps out of it to focus on comforting Terra and angrily wanting to kill his uncle but then gets shocked to find out that the thief from last night is dead, realizing that he might've accidentally killed him instead.
Of course, he still takes Terra to school and heads to his own school but is being glared at by them and yet guesses correctly that it's due to Sara Jade slandering him out of petty spite, which an annoyed Kenny and Mara confirm to him.
In class, he gets praised by his favorite teacher Mr. Warden (Lawrence Fishburne) for getting a better grade than how Dash got a C- but that angers the bully, who tries to hurt Patton with a football.
Suddenly, Patton is able to take notice without even looking at the bully and manages to avoid it via accidentally dropping his pencil and bending over to pick it up, causing the football to hit Mr. Warden and for Dash to get into trouble for it.
At lunch, Patton and Kenny were both getting curious about what's happening to the former but then Patton senses Mara about to slip on a wet floor and manages to catch her from falling, much to the trio's shock.
As they sit down to talk about it, he suddenly shoots web at a lunch tray and when he tried to get it off, he accidentally yanks the tray towards Dash and covers him in food.
Due to knowing him so well to fear the outcome, he tries walking out of the lunchroom before a conflict could start but Dash already notices him and isn't happy about this, obviously about to take revenge soon.
At the lockers, he goes to get his stuff and leave but then suddenly detects Dash arriving and coming to beat him up, which he's able to successfully dodge a punch that only ends up hitting the locker.
Knowing there's no reason with Dash, Patton can just only dodge the punches until he finally grabs Dash's arm and punches him away but after some short cheering, Dash's arm is suddenly broken from this.
Shocked and horrified by what he accidentally did to his bully, Patton leaves the school in fear and remorse over this, ignoring his friends shouting to come back.
In an alleyway, he was freaking out over this and was scared of what's happening to him but then noticed something on his fingers and when he finds out that he's able to climb a wall, he immediately cheers up and gets excited.
Once he was done climbing up, he started jumping from rooftop to rooftop in excitement but then got curious about something on his wrist and was excited to shoot webs from his wrist, even deciding to plan on swinging.
During swinging, he was scared at first but then got excited and had fun swinging across the city until he landed on a rooftop and sat in excitement, liking his powers right now.
At the house, he came home and was relieved that only Teresa was there but she assured him that the good people at school saw what happened and are telling Patton's side of the story, much to his relief.
In his room, he was still excited about his powers but then felt sick from them and even vomited in a toilet, causing him to now go back to being worried about how bad they might be.
However, his abusive aunt Paige confronts him over the fight and even sides with Dash over this but much to Patton's owns surprise, he bravely claims that he doesn't see it as his problem.
Angered by this, she tries to abusively hit him but he suddenly grabs her arm and throws her to the wall, finally having enough of this and deciding to kill her after angrily rejecting her cowardly pleas of mercy.
Downstairs, his uncle Ted is hearing all of this and does correctly suspect Patton as responsible but still takes out his belt and marches up the stairs to confront his nephew.
In Patton's room, Ted storms in only to be terrified to see his wife being killed by Patton, who is looking like he's transforming into some kind of man-spider hybrid.
Realizing that something's wrong, he tries to run away but Patton trips him and drags him back into the room, refusing to forgive him and even saying the man's twisted morale "With Great Power Comes Great Opportunity."
Upon picking up the man's belt and enjoying the man's screams of horror, he slowly but still sinisterly closes the door with a scary smirk on his face, silencing the man's screams for good and literally sealing his fate.
The next morning, he woke up as if everything from last night didn't happen and his whole room was clean without any evidence from before, as if he managed to somehow destroy evidence without even knowing.
When checking on Terra, she did wonder why her parents are suddenly missing right now but due to how the couple treated them, they could care less for where they are.
After dropping Terra off at school, he didn't have much trouble at his own school but in class, he was suddenly getting sick and a popular student named Wendy Stacen (Emma Roberts) volunteered to take him to the nurse due to others still caring for his health, no matter if they still bullied him.
In the nurse's office, Patton is grateful for her kindness but reluctantly brushes her off to avoid getting her targeted and yet she still chooses to befriend him only for their moment to be unintentionally interrupted by her boyfriend Henry Oznick (Dave Franco), although he himself chooses to befriend Patton as well.
As he was recovering from his sickness, he notices a poster for a wrestling ring and once he saw the address, he decides to test his skills in that fight but unaware of this increasing faith.
At the unground wrestling ring, he ends up deciding to fight against the current wrestler Bonejaw (Jason Momoa) but when he defeats him, he also accidentally killed him as well and this makes him flee in panic and remorse.
Outside the ring, he was shocked and horrified by what happened but felt a hand on his shoulder and turned around to see his abusive Coach Lester (John Cena), who forces him to run a lap around the gym as punishment for underage wrestling and then demands him to go hit the showers after he's done.
As Patton does take a shower, Lester brings out jump rope with obvious bad plans for Patton but the latter's powers take notice of this and immediately protect him via attacking Lester, dragging him into the showers to towel whip him, and even having Patton kill him via cutting his back open very slowly and painfully.
Once he was done, he then heard someone come in and it was a man named Doug Kendall (Justin Long) but Patton recognizes him as a childhood babysitter who secretly abused him and got away with it.
Upon recognizing Patton as well, Doug tries to flee in fear but Patton keeps the door shut and manages to kill him painfully as well via grabbing him by the throat, strangling him, stabbing his chest, and even cutting it open until he's dead.
After this was done, Patton snaps out of it and was in shock at finding the corpses but upon seeing his clawed hand and realizing that he's the killer, he screams in shock and horror at what he's done.
Later on, the police found him and drove him home but accidentally went to Sara Jade's house due to her secretly writing her address on him and despite their suspicions, she's able to fool them into giving him to her.
Once they were gone, Sara and her friends take advantage of Patton's sick and tired state to gangr**e him and even invite Dash and his pals to join along via having them record this for fun, even taking pleasure in Patton's fear and discomfort.
However, he manages to escape back to his house without them noticing after they were done but he's still found crying by Terra and after informing her of what happened, she comforts him and angrily curses the culprits.
The next morning, he is still traumatized by what happened to him and cries over it but is suddenly calmed down when his mother's voice comforts him over this, despite him being well-aware of his parents being HYDRA agents.
At his school, he witnesses 911 taking the corpses away and yet not approaching him because his powers left no fingerprints but due to the bullies showing edited version of the recording, he's ostracized even more.
Even worst, Kenny and Mara suddenly turn against him and accuse him of being a male prostitute that willingly did it for money, leading to an argument until they accidentally call him a slur and accuse him of being to blame for Sara's cheating.
However, they then realize what they just said and try to apologize but a heartbroken and enraged Patton calls them out on this and disowns them as his friends, leaving them to be guilt-ridden and scolded by an angry Henry and Wendy.
Outside the school, Patton hugs his knees in tears at this constant abuse but then Dash and his friends choose to make it worse via beating him up and throwing him in the dumpster, even cruelly locking it.
At night, the same spider that bit him manages to unlock the dumpster and free him but he just tearfully asks it to let him die and even sees him as too pathetic to even care for, which makes the spider cry for its new human friend.
However, it also becomes enraged by how Patton's being treated and summons its friends and family, which Patton notices and finds out that he can command them with the spider's help.
Despite this, he starts to like these powers and decides to have the spider warn them on why he's so upset right now, which the other spiders were also enraged by this and agree to help him take revenge on those that hurt him.
Before that, he also kindly thanks the spider for its help and adopts him as his new friend, even happily naming him Webby and it hisses in agreement with being named that.
In the meantime, they also help him out with unlocking some of his powers and even comforting him when he feels pain but instead of being upset by this pain, he embraces it and only sees a boost in power.
At the cornfield, the jocks were drinking there and even peeing on some of the ground but one of them Rudy notices Patton in the field and they spend more time insulting him instead of wondering why he's there but he's no longer scared of them anymore and just chooses to mock them for drinking in the cornfield via jokingly accusing them of compensating for how they couldn't please their girlfriends in an orgy, making his insect friends hiss in laughter at this.
Offended and enraged by this, Dash and his crew proceed to angrily beat him for this but thanks to his powers, he didn't feel pain from this and was just merely annoyed until Rudy made the mistake of smashing a bottle on him and angering him.
Having enough fun, he murders them one by one via breaking Rudy's jaw and feeding him to the insects, ripping Bong's intestines out to decapitate him with it, ripping Rod's groin and brain out, and ripping Dash's limbs off before stomping on his head.
Once he was done, Patton happily thanks his new friends and has them feast on the corpses before they go home, which they happily agreed with him and were also satisfied by this.
At home, he comforts a sleeping Terra's worries away and softly advises her to go to sleep while claiming to love her and even softly brushes her face with his clawed hand, much to his embarrassment.
In the backyard, he goes to the toolshed and starts helping his bug friends take it over as their temporary hideout for now, even giving off an evil laugh with them as they start designing a suit for him.
The next morning, Patton has gotten confidence and is no longer afraid of any wrongdoers anymore but instead is happy about taking Terra to school and even walking normally to his own school, where his classmates aren't hating him but are looking remorseful.
In class, he's even determined enough to purposefully get good grades and no longer being worried that the bullies are being mad about it, which is another reason why he had bad grades.
Speaking of which, he also shows no concern when Dash and his friends aren't seen in class but due to that group being bullies, no one blames him for the lack of concern and even the teachers were relieved due to being disrespected by them as well.
At the cafeteria, he sits with his new friends due to still cutting off his old ones but Sara Jade still comes to his table just to threaten him via planning to make his life miserable unless he does what she says, which gets everyone's attention.
However, he just laughs and even claims her to be so moody over her rough time as this makes the whole school laugh at her instead, much to her anger and offense.
Despite this, she's still shocked by the school siding with him over her and really wants to know why they're doing so, which a smug Patton just points at a T.V. and she gets shocked to find her and the group's true natures being exposed.
In a flashback, Patton narrates that after him and his insects killed Dash and his lackeys, they found a flash drive from Dash's camera and were able to find recordings of the gang r**e off of it before managing to download on the internet.
Back to the current events, Sara Jade finally sees that the school has turned against her but claims this to be fake and even accuses Patton of framing her only for Principal Philips (James Gunn) to angrily ask for her report to his office, which she reluctantly does so with her friends.
Despite this, Patton still expresses disappointment in the school for always easily believing her and never asking for his side of the story but does advise them that not all popular people are right about a lot of things and warns them that they have to earn trust and forgiveness, which they took this to heart and bow down in shame but his true friends still clapped for him.
In the principal's office, Patton is needing his uncle and aunt for this but Sara's parents are on his side due to knowing their daughter's true nature and thanks to him, they also have evidence that they found from her room about how she treats Patton.
Upon all of this being shown, Sara reluctantly and yet finally confesses to her crimes but still sadly shows no remorse for it and even defends her via selfishly complaining that no one says no to her nor rejects her, much to even Patton's disgust.
Because of this, not only does she get expelled by the angry principal and disowned by her disappointed parents but they're also calling the police on her and they won't forget about her friends as well, much to her fear and dismay.
Sadly, she still never learns from this and even selfishly blames Patton for ruining her life but he snaps back at her via scolding her and claiming that she has herself to blame for this, which the adults agreed with him.
After this, her pride still takes over and she gets the foolish idea to break into his house to plant fake evidence and frame him but unknown to her, this only seals her and the other girls' fates as the beginning of revenge on them.
At his house, the girls break in and start ransacking it to search for fake evidence to frame Patton with but when Sara Jade comes upon Patton's journal, she gets horrified to find scary drawings on it and slowly realizes that he's the killer.
Upon this reveal, she talks with the girls about it and they're horrified as well by this but when Sara Jade gets a call from Dash's phone, she is worried to hear Patton answering it and being told that he's home.
From outside the house, they indeed see Patton in front of the house and ending the call by crushing Dash's phone, as if to send a message that they're next right now for making his life the most miserable.
Back to the group, they get worried about their chances and reluctantly decide to split up but Patton uses that to his advantage via grabbing Lin Chen and yanking her up, making Sara Jade scream in horror.
At the front door, Liv Olsen goes to her in concern and the other girls come back to find out what's wrong but Doria Brant is suddenly grabbed by Patton while he's swinging, locking the girls inside.
Freaked out by this and blaming Sara Jade for getting them involved, Cally Envil tries to run away in fear only for Patton to jump on her and crush her, making Sara Jade run to the back door in a panic.
After expressing annoyance at Sara Jade's cowardice, Liv picks up a flashlight and searches for Patton but tearfully apologizes for bullying him and even promises to love him if he lets her go, which he rejects her apology via attacking her.
In the backyard, Sara Jade finds the tool shed and enters it to hide from Patton but gets horrified to find Ted and Paige's bodies tangled in web along with the other girls, seeing more proof about Patton being the killer.
Upon finding a tool and taking it, she suddenly sees an injured Liv being thrown through the door but with her dying breath, she angrily blames Sara Jade for all of this happening and wishes to have never joined her.
Suddenly, she hears something behind her and slowly turns around to see Patton hanging upside down but this time, he's wearing a dark spider-suit that he and his insects made.
However, Sara Jade starts pretending to apologize for what she did to him and even lied about being in love with him but is secretly planning to kill him with the tool, hoping the end this nightmare and get out of there.
At first, it seems like Patton forgives her and she gives him an upside-down kiss for old times' sake only to try and kill him but he suddenly grabs her wrist and admits that he didn't fall for it before yanking her up, knocking her unconscious.
When she wakes up, she tied to a giant web and is unable to move due to how strong it is but as she struggles and yells for help, she hears something and looks down to find numerous insects starting to cover her up.
As she starts struggling and yelling in fear, Patton is seen watching this in sadistic glee and satisfaction while even cheerfully asking his new friends to finish her nice and slow as he gives a lecture about how the bugs outnumber humans by a factor of trillions and humanity doesn't stand a chance, which Sara Jade gives out one last scream before the bugs slowly finish her off via suffocating her and then eating her alive.
The next morning, police and paramedics arrive on the scene and find the dead bodies in a different area but Patton had removed all the evidence against him and has gotten away with everything for now, most likely due to exposing his abusers' crimes.
The film then ends with Patton comforting Terra and secretly smirking at his victory before the end credits show him going on a killing spree in his costume and is called the "Dark Web" by the media, which Big T (Michael Rooker) also shows reports about similar villains with powers as well and hinting at a possible evil Avengers team.
However, we see Kenny suddenly be bit by a spider as well, giving off a sequel hook and possible hope.
Cast[]
- Asa Butterfield as Patton Parnel/Dark Web: The titular protagonist of the film who starts off as an abused and bullied teenager until he gains superpowers and becomes a supervillain. Based on Peter Parker/Spider-Man but as an evil variant who doesn't hold back against those that harmed him first and does take bullying very seriously due to how the bullying has now been increased to full-on abuse towards him for no reason.
- Debby Ryan as Sara Jade Batson: The main antagonist of the film and Patton's abusive ex. Based on Mary Jane Watson and according to the creator, these 2 dated as well but broke up on bad terms due to her attitude and it's based on how people see Mary Jane only to now get hated even more later on due to more of her traits being shown and she is actually so bad that even her actress doesn't enjoy portraying such an evil person and full-on hates her too.
- Lucas Till as Dash Johnson: Patton's main bully. Based on Flash Thompson but is way worse than him and is even disliked by that bully as well for being an irredeemable abuser who doesn't have any excuse at all for his behavior.
- Dylan Minnette as Kenny Ryder: Patton's male childhood friend. He's not based on anyone but is instead just a new character who is friends with the guy and yet almost acted like a Harry Osborn.
- Bella Thorne as Mara Jones: Patton's female childhood friend. She's not based on anyone either but is instead also just a new character who is friends with the guy and yet is believed to be just like Michelle Jones.
- Dave Franco as Henry Oznick: A popular student who befriends Patton. Based on Harry Osborn via being popular friend for a bullied kid but fortunately, his own father never becomes a villain.
- Emma Roberts as Wendy Stacen: Henry's girlfriend who also befriends Patton. Based on Gwen Stacy.
- Jenna Ortega as Terra Parnel: Patton's younger cousin and adopted little sister.
- More coming soon.
T.V. Tropes[]
- Abusive Parents: In another opposite way, Patton's uncle and aunt are actually abusive to him and only raised him for money instead of actual care while they also abuse his cousin as well but it's unknown if Patton's real parents would be like this because when he mentions them being Hydra agents, he's uncomfortable about it and admits that's something to not talk about but the uncle and aunt part also makes sense about his hidden dark side because they're part of the reason for it.
- Adults Are Useless: Subverted; Not many adults seem to care about Patton's misery and don't do much to help him out while some of them are even mean to him too but there are still nicer ones who are proud of his intelligence and also correctly see the bullies as true monsters that they rightfully hate as well.
- Accidentally Murder: Patton's first kill was clearly unintentional as all he did was push a thief into a brick wall and only found out in the morning that he unknowingly killed the guy but he still brushed it off too quickly, although this might be justified due to technically defending himself from a criminal but he does show remorse for killing Bone Jaw that he was fighting against.
- Alpha Bitch: Well, Sara Jade is worse than that but she is indeed this as she seems to influence the bullying and is the biggest problem in Patton's normal life, especially how she leads a gang r**e on him.
- Ambiguously Gay: Hilariously, Patton was always mistaken as gay due to constantly rejecting Sara Jade or showing no interest in her but it's actually confirmed that he's bi-sexual and he actually hates her for her true nature.
- Antagonist Title: Downplayed; He's the Villain Protagonist of the film but in some ways, he's indeed this due to also being the Big Bad of the film who's becoming a supervillain and is the killer of the killing spree.
- Asshole Victims: Unlike Brightburn, Dark Web's main victims are surprisingly awful and disgusting people that can't be rooted for because their actions are what cause this event, even having no tears shed for them.
- Tyler Sampson: While his death was accidental and Patton was shocked to have killed him, this guy was still trying to rob him after hitting him with a car and according to Word of God, he's that bully from the Haunting Hour episode Swarmin Norman.
- Ted and Paige Parnell: Unlike Ben and May Parker, there are no tears shed for this abusive couple that get killed by the nephew they had abused and even Terra didn't show concern for them either, only being confused that they're missing.
- More coming soon.
- Awesome: Of course, there will be awesome moments.
- Patton's Powers: While his new evil path is getting scary, it's still very awesome how his powers go such as swinging across the city, being able to talk with insects, winning a fight against an opponent, jumping high across buildings, and even still having the ability to sense something coming, showing how much of a Spider-Man he is.
- Killing Enemies: Due to how much of a Beyond Redemption Hate Sinks they were, it's indeed satisfying to see Patton fighting back against those that hurt him and while the deaths are a Nightmare Fuel, they are still well-earned and very justified.
- More coming soon.
- Bad Boss: Both Sara Jade and Dash have no care for their fellow bullies and are even willing to brush their deaths off or even downright willing to abandon them to save their own skins.
- Beta Bitch: Dash is obviously this to Sara Jade just as much as the cheerleading squad are but Liv Olsen is mostly this trope and yet she's at least regretting it due to what it's causing.
- Beyond Redemption: Just as Patton correctly points out, Sara Jade shows no signs of stopping what she's doing and is only causing her own downfall to happen due to lack of remorse or even refusing to admit when she lost.
- Big Bad: Hilariously, both the Villain Protagonist and the antagonists are all this trope due to the former being a murderous supervillain and the latter being way worse than him.
- Catharsis Factor: Unlike Brightburn, you are instead very satisfied and relieved when the Asshole Victims get killed by the person that they've been making miserable, especially when they keep showing themselves as unlikable.
- Complete Monster: In some ironic twist, Sara Jade Batson is instead this due to being a sexually abusive Queen Bee who is considered worse than Patton via being willing to orchestrate a gangr**e on him and has no excuse nor remorse for her crimes but is instead an irredeemable brat who also causes these events to happen in the 1st place and only tries to kill him to protect herself from being murdered, even being a Dirty Coward who leaves her friends to die and also refuses to accept punishment.
- Corrupted Character Copy: Similar to Brightburn, the cast of Dark Web can be considered this to the cast of the Spider-Man franchise, especially with how things are turning different.
- Patton Parnel/Dark Web: Obviously, he's this to Peter Parker/Spider-Man via being a bullied high school student who gets superpowers from a radioactive spider bite but instead of being a superhero that learns responsibility, he sadly becomes a supervillain who has snapped from all the abuse and bullying he suffers to the point of only killing those that upset or even harm him and even kills his uncle and aunt for being abusive to him but is still given a Freudian Excuse for this.
- Sara Jade Batson: Unsurprisingly, she is clearly Mary Jane Watson but this time, she's now a sexually abusive Queen Bee who is obsessed with Patton and is even the reason the events are happening.
- More coming soon.
- Creepy Coach: Coach Lester fully lives up to this title via abusively forcing Patton to run around a gym at night and even showing obvious plans to harm him, making his death very well-deserved and justified.
- Darker and Edgier: Just like Brightburn, this is a horror adaptation of Spider-Man where he's now a supervillain and because of this, you might expect this to have a horror theme that involves death, foul language, and etc.
- Depraved Bisexual: Coming soon.
- Downer Ending: Due to this being a supervillain origin film, the titular protagonist still obviously becomes a supervillain that ends up killing those who harmed him and gets away with it due to exposing their true nature as this leaves him to start terrorizing the world in his costume and even his friendship with Kenny and Mara might be permanently shattered right now, not even mention how the media also warns us of other similar villains with powers and hinting at a sequel hook about it.
- Earn Your Happy Ending: However, not only did Patton still stand up for himself and his victims still had it coming for what they've said and done but his relationship with the bugs had repaired their faith in some of humanity and even fixing the mess that the events of Swarmin Norman caused because of Norman's betrayal, especially with how Patton chooses to be grateful to his bugs for helping him out and let's not forget that Kenny is also bitten by another spider with obvious signs of possible hope.
- Even Evil Can Be Loved: No matter if anyone's unaware of his true nature or not, those close to Patton would still cherish him dearly and only hate those who make him miserable, which is understandable because he wasn't always evil.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Same as the above trope, Patton still loves his sister Terra and cherishes anyone that's nice to him, even treating his insects as his family and feeling bad for how they get treated.
- It's vice versa with the insects as well since they not only show true loyalty to Patton and treat him like their possible leader but they also appreciate his kindness for them and even get angry at those who dare harm him.
- Even Evil Have Standards: Of course, Patton and some villains will still have this.
- Abusers and r*****s: Due to going through that, Patton strongly hates abusive monsters and disgusting r*****s with a passion.
- Same with his insects and powers, they also hate his victims out of genuine disgust and are more than happy to help him get revenge on them for this reason, even genuinely seeing such behavior as truly evil.
- Sara Jade Batson: While it's still due to hating her very much, Patton still understandably shows irritation and disappointment at Sara Jade's lack of remorse or redemption and how bratty she still is, which only leads to her demise.
- Hilariously, even Liv Olsen seems to be genuinely regretting what she's said and done to the point of trying to back out of the last evil act and even tearfully begging Patton to please forgive her, although it sadly doesn't save her from death.
- Accidental Deaths: Before embracing his villain side, Patton was shocked and horrified when killing people, especially when 2 of the deaths were an accident.
- This also applies to accidental injuries due to him showing shock and horror as well when it seemed like he accidentally broke Dash's arm during a fight with him.
- Bonejaw's Name: In a funny way, Patton finds his opponent's wrestling name to be very weird and ridiculous, even jokingly calling him "Blow Job" over this.
- Abusers and r*****s: Due to going through that, Patton strongly hates abusive monsters and disgusting r*****s with a passion.
- Everyone Has Standards: While they still didn't help Patton out, his classmates and even teachers usually show concern when he isn't feeling too good and have him go to the nurse's office, even giving looks when the bullies go too far.
- Not to mention, they also show remorse when finding out that Patton's an innocent victim of Sara Jade and are willing to turn against her when this is revealed, which even the principal and her parents kick her out for what she's said and done.
- For The Evulz: And that's what makes the bullies even worse, they have no Freudian Excuse for their behavior nor any motivation and benefit from this but instead are bullying Patton just for their twisted entertainment and even strangely like the idea of making his life miserable or even wanting him to own him as their personal punching bag, making it easier to root for Patton to kill these monsters very brutally and even painfully.
- Freudian Excuse: Unlike how Brightburn had their titular Villain Protagonist be evil by choice, Patton has a very justified motive: His parents were HYDRA agents that were killed by S.H.E.I.L.D., his uncle and aunt are very abusive to him instead of being loving mentors to him, his cousin/adopted sister Terra is also being abused by the couple as well, he was molested as a kid by a pedophile, his bullying situation is very brutal to go through, the adults never gave him help at all, his abusive ex is only using him for her own benefits, and even his only friends don't do much to defend him but when his powers activate, his dark path only gets increased due to the bullying being turned into downright sexual abuse as well, his so-called friends turn against him because of a false rumor, his new friends seem to be convincing him to stop being soft, his guilt over accidentally kills is affecting his sanity, and even his insects are encouraging him to embrace his current villainy, which anyone would snap from something like this.
- Fridge Brilliance: Patton being smart enough to upload videos or even hack cameras already makes him out to be very awesome without his powers and it only took the said powers to influence him into using these skills against his wrongdoers.
- Fridge Horror: Due to Patton's reaction to what his bullies were going to do to him, it's possible that they've done this kind of crime to him before and even worse, he's most likely not the only victim who went through but sadly didn't rat them out due to both trauma and fear that they'll do worse to him.
- Funny: Fortunately, there's still some entertaining moments.
- Patton's Insults: And one of the things to like about Patton, he always has a vulgar remark or even response to anyone who's being rude to him first, especially how he even used one of them during his breakup with Sara Jade.
- More coming soon.
- Hate Sinks: In a film where there's only Asshole Victims, we'll obviously have this trope for them instead.
- Sara Jade Batson: Oh dear god, this girl is the most evil and disgusting character in the entire film due to how her abuse towards Patton is sexual abuse and even worse of all, she's the reason this is happening in the 1st place.
- Cheer Squad: And don't forget about her awful posse who also too willingly took part in the gangr**e for fun but Liv Olsen is a debated example due to wanting to back out of breaking into Patton's house and even starting to regret what she did to him.
- Dash Johnson: Oh boy, don't get us started on this abusive brute who also bullies Patton for no reason other than sadistic fun and goes too far via suicide baiting and recording a gangr**e, even having no Freudian Excuse for this either.
- Sports Team: Unsurprisingly, Dash's teammates aren't any better either due to also sharing the same crimes and also choosing to attack Patton for little to no reason, which neither of them have any standards either.
- Ted and Paige Parnel: Unlike Ben and May Parker, this abusive couple has no love for Patton nor Terra but only care about monthly checks and just abuses them, even giving a twisted version of Ben's famous lecture.
- Tyler Sampson: Despite his brief cameo in this film, he's still remembered as a school bully who seems to only become a thief and just as expected, even the bugs rightfully blame him for their episode's ending.
- Bonejaw: No matter if Patton feels remorse for killing this guy or not, he's still an arrogant wrestler who has injured his opponents and just boasts about it, so Patton has nothing to be sorry for.
- Coach Lester: Unsurprisingly, there just had to be a Creepy Coach who obviously had bad plans for Patton and is implied to be going for girls as well, showing himself to be quite the creep.
- Doug Kendell: And if Coach Lester wasn't enough, this guy is revealed to be Patton's childhood babysitter who sexually abused him and somehow got away with it, even most likely planning to hurt him again.
- Jerkass Has A Point: Sadly, some rude people aren't wrong sometimes.
- Coach Lester's Lecture: Despite him being a Creepy Coach who's abusing Patton, he's not wrong to punish the kid for faking his way into wrestling and killing an opponent, although he still gets hated for trying to hurt the kid.
- Kenny and Mara's Behaviors: While it's unfair for them to act like this, they do point out that the bullies edited out any proof of a gangr**e going on and making Patton look like a willing victim, even if this doesn't excuse the 2 for acting like this.
- However, Henry and Wendy uses this trope back on them for doing that to Patton since they already know how much of a monster Sara Jade is and should be finding out that she framed Patton, which the 2 took to heart and realize how much they screwed up.
- Patton's Speech: No matter how harsh or vulgar he could be, his speech was indeed something to take advise from about how everyone shouldn't really believe rumors without proof at all or how they are also at fault for easily believing them without asking his side of the story, which everyone understandably takes to heart and agrees with him.
- Liv's Concerns: While this might be out of cowardice and she had no problem joining in on a gangr**e, she at least knows that breaking into Patton's house and framing him again out of petty spite isn't really a wise idea, which she ended up being proven correct about how things just went worse for them but Sara Jade still sadly never listens as always.
- Blaming Sara Jade: Despite still listening to her and taking part in this, Cally blaming her for this final act is very accurate as it was still Sara Jade's idea to begin with and all it's doing was getting them all killed by Patton, although she's not spared because she's not fully remorseful and is running away out of fear instead of a Heel-Face-Turn.
- Once again, Liv is also this during her final moments where she just blames Sara Jade for all of this happening right now, which is now fully accurate due to Sara Jade being the one who brought Patton to that lab and pushed him into the spider containers that ended up leading to him getting his powers and becoming the one who's killing them right now.
- Karma Houdini Warranty: After terrorizing Patton for so long through extreme methods and somehow getting away with it, the Asshole Victims finally get what they deserve but in a lethal way and yet this is a perfect way to deal with them.
- Moral Event Horizon: If abusing or just bullying him wasn't enough, his main targets fully cross this when they gangr**e him and even film it to make him into a pariah that mostly ruins his past friendship, which is what makes him mark them as Beyond Redemption and to not give them any mercy at all.
- However, Sara Jade keeps crossing this even more via breaking into Patton's house, selfishly ditching Liv to save her own skin, and even trying to kill Patton instead of accepting what she had done wrong, all of which leads to her own demise.
- Oh and let's not forget how Dash Johnson already crossed this in the opening narration via cruelly suicide baiting Patton and even implying that he hates him for just merely existing, showing himself to be just as bad as Sara Jade and him locking Patton in a dumpster to rot can also count as this due to showing no concern if he dies in it or not.
- And yes, even the abusive adults are crossing this too with how they Patton or even more, how his abusive uncle and aunt also take their anger out on their own daughter Terra for no reason at all.
- Nightmare Fuel: Just as expected, there are mostly these scenes right now.
- Patton's Killing Spree: Despite the Freudian Excuse and we're now Rooting For The Empire, it's still horrifying how he's killing the ones who have wronged him, especially through gory ways or even having his bugs help out with it when they can and please note that this could be what Spider-Man would be if he ever turned evil.
- And let's not forget how he had some brief man-spider forms when killing his victims from the 2nd and 3rd days, which was fortunately never shown again but still enough to almost give you nightmares or even puke.
- But most importantly, even Sara Jade's well-deserved yet brutal death is the most terrifying due to her waking up on a spider web and finding her body being covered with bugs about to eat her after suffocating her, have fun sleeping at night after this.
- Abuse and Bullying: Not only is it very heartbreaking to be watching, it's also now very horrifying how such abusive people can be so very cruel towards one boy who done nothing wrong to them to even warrant it, especially how they do it for fun.
- And yes, the gangr**e on Patton is extremely this as well due to him being in a tired or even sick phase and the ones doing this just take advantage of it while recording it, even sadistically laughing at it and making you hate them even more.
- But Patton's not the only victim of this mistreatment, the scene where Terra gets belt whipped by her own father Ted Parnel for no reason is also scary to see and Patton's reaction to Ted's reaction already confirms that he was also whipped with it.
- Oh God, What Have I Done: To be fair, there can be still this.
- Patton's Accidental Kills: Whenever Patton's kills are accidental, he usually shows or even expresses this trope due to not meaning to have done that and only wanting his victim to back down or something, although he eventually gets over it due to his powers corrupting him and also how the victims were Asshole Victims.
- Dash's Broken Arm: Despite it being Dash's fault for attacking him, Patton still understandably shows shock and horror as well at what he did to the guy's arm and it's what causes him to run away from the school but fortunately, he gets over it when getting excited about discovering his powers and later finding out about Dash somehow managing to fake the arm injury just to get Patton into trouble or even falsely sue him.
- More coming soon.
- Rooting For The Empire: Hilariously, that's the whole point of making his origins more understanding and less upsetting, all of his victims are so much of Beyond Redemption Asshole Victims that you are instead siding with Patton to kill them and get away.
- Tearjerker: Considering what film this is, there will still be moments like this.
- Patton's Suffering: Oh man, everything the kid goes through is very hard to be watching (and especially for those who might have gotten put through this) but what makes this even more heartbreaking is how he even got gangr***d and is treated as a pariah for it instead of given justice or sympathy over it, which is the main reason why these events are happening.
- And even most of all, the way he just tearfully begged the spider to let him die because he doesn't see a reason to harm it but instead only saw himself as too pathetic to care for, making you want to give him a hug and be there for him.
- More coming soon.

- Unexplained Recovery: Hilariously, even the cast and crew have no idea how Dash was somehow able to fix his arm and fake the injury just to falsely sue Patton out of petty spite, they're just sticking to the script and it's better left not asked.
