City 17 (Cantonese: 城市一七號 Jyutping: sing4 si5 jat1 cat1 hou6) is a 2007 English-language Hong Kong computer-/traditionally-animated mockumentary science fiction comedy film co-produced and directed by Jason Ma and Nick Ho. It was based on Half-Life 2 by Valve, and features the characters from The Adventures of Hijitus, GeGeGe no Kitarō, Werner and Mortadelo & Filemon. To obtain the desired hand-held documentary feel, the film's animation team motion-captured a physical camera operator's moves.
City 17 was released in Hong Kong by Sundream Motion Pictures on 10 October 2007 as a tie-in promotion of the video game compilation The Orange Box, before its U.S. release by Crossover Films on 20 October.
Plot[]
In a mockumentary set in an alien invasion on Earth by a multidimensional empire known as the Combine, the traditionally-animated gang (Hijitus, Oaky, Larguirucho, the Kitarō family sans Ittan-Momen and Nurikabe, Werner, Andi, Mortadelo and Filemon) arrives at City 17, an Eastern European city (probably in Russia as most of the posters and signs are in Russian) which houses the Citadel, a several-miles-tall tower which serves as the headquarters of the Combine on Earth.
After leaving the train, the gang and the other passengers are welcomed by a broadcast by Dr. Wallace Breen, former administrator of Black Mesa, and now the administrator of Earth. Continuing on their way, the gang meets armed Civil Protection officers policing the train station and its surroundings. One of them separates them from the rest of the arriving citizens and directs them into a small interrogation room before revealing himself to be former Black Mesa security guard Barney Calhoun, who is operating undercover for the Resistance.
Barney contacts former Black Mesa employee Dr. Isaac Kleiner. After a bit of discussion and assuming that Gordon Freeman has sent them to City 17, they decide to send the gang over to Kleiner's laboratory. Along the way, the gang finds themselves in the middle of a Civil Protection raid on a tenement house and they defeat the Civil Protection officers with the aid of Alyx Vance.
