The story is set in the fantasy Kingdom of Seberia during the Christmas season. The king and queen are hosting a grand Christmas party at Seberia Castle, and the protagonist, Wendy, attends with her friends. The game's central goal is for Wendy to locate five legendary Magical Presents; legend says that collecting them will summon Santa Claus.
Through various interactions, Wendy assists the castle's guests with their holiday preparations. This includes helping the royal family decorate the castle, providing ingredients for festive food like Meat Pie and Eggnog, and solving personal dilemmas for characters like the lonely warrior Sophia and the captain of the guard, Kenneth. Development and Release[]
Christmaslight was developed by BrainPower, and published under the LittleLulu Falcon Emblem label. The game was built using the RPG Maker MV engine, a common tool for creating role-playing games, and is speculated to use premade assets. It was released globally on December 15, 2020, as a free download for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems.
Reception[]
As a freeware title with a limited release, Christmaslight did not receive widespread critical coverage. It is primarily known within niche communities interested in Christmas-themed indie games and RPG Maker projects. Feedback from players typically highlights its simple, family-friendly charm and festive atmosphere, though some note the use of premade assets and its brevity as characteristics of a small-scale hobby project.
Trivia[]
- The game's director, Yoshinori Kitase, shares the name of a prominent video game producer known for his work on the Final Fantasy series, though this is likely a coincidental homage.
- The game is explicitly described as freeware and not for sale, encouraging players to download it for free.
- The narrative includes a trope where collecting a specific number of items (five Magical Presents) summons a legendary figure (Santa Claus).
