Cheke's wood rail (SciiFii)

The Cheke's wood rail (Dryolimnas chekei), also known as Sauzier's wood rail, is a species of rail which is endemic to the Mascarene island of Mauritius. The Cheke's wood rail was once extinct since pre-18th century, but has since been brought back from extinction and reintroduced to the Mascarene island of Mauritius. The closest relative of the Cheke's wood rail is the white-throated rail (Dryolimnas cuvieri). The Cheke's wood rail is about the size of the white-throated rail, with the wingspan of up to about 33 centimeters across on average. The Réunion rail is entirely flightless like its relatives, the white-throated rails. The Cheke's wood rail is carnivorous and primarily feeds on crabs, frogs, small lizards, and occasionally bird eggs. The conservation status of the Cheke's wood rail is Vulnerable due to some habitat loss and historic poaching, however, thanks to the conservationists, the Cheke's wood rail is a protected species.
