Centre is a 2002 Russian American Psychological Horror film produced by George Clooney, Nikita Mikhalkov and written and directed by Christopher Landon starring Vladimir Mashkov, Ryan Gosling, Don Cheadle, Lyanka Gryu, Maksim Matveyev, Danila Kozlovsky, Oleg Taktarov, Anna Kovalchuk, David Cross, David Oyelowo, Joe Dempsie and Anna Chlumsky.

The film is based on the 1989 Well To Hell Hoax that circulated in 1995 over the internet regarding a group of Russian engineers who in an undisclosed location in Siberia drilled a putative hole that on audio record captured the sound of screaming and anguish, propelling the concept that the group had unearthed the literal location of Hell and the screams were those of the damned.

The film however in homage to Stanley Kubrick's famous 1980 iteration of Stephen King's acclaimed novel The Shining relies on psychological suggestion and ambiguity.

Christopher's second feature film following his experimental, cult film Holz Fist that marketed around select theatres and film festival circuits in 1998.

Shooting took place in Kamchatka, Russia and on operated sound stages at Industrial Light & Magic studios in San Rafael, California.

The film was released at the Cannes, Sundance and International Film Festival circuits on March 11th, 2002 and then theatrically on May 11th, 2002 to critical and audience acclaim.

Plot

Russian engineer Aleksei Azzacov is approached by English contractor Mr. Aberleen first name undisclosed to be lead an international drilling team, including some of his former associates for a job at Poritsat Mountain in Kamchatka Krai, Russia.

Alek living on a remote Russian outpost since the tragic death of his wife and children is reluctant but eventually comes to radio back in to Mr. Aberleen and agrees to the expedition.

His drilling team consists of Americans wisecrack Bailey, Grey, Sky, former associates Katarina, Olga, Rolkov,
