Plot

Nine-year-old Cedric (Jacob Hopkins) is the beloved child of a widowed woman (Angelina Jolie). While a kind and devoted mother who feels as though her son needs a father's care, he remarries to a widowed man named Lawrence Tremaine (Benedict Cumberbatch), who has two sons of his own: Dilian and Anthony. After Cedric's mother quit unexpectedly, Lawrence is revealed to be a cruel and selfish man, and Cedric is humiliated and mistreated by his stepfamily, who take over the estate and ultimately reduce him to being a scullery maid in his own home. Despite this, Cedric grows into a kind and gentle Elevin-year-old young boy, befriending the animals in the barn and the mice and birds who live around the chateau.

One day, while Cedric (Dakota Goyo) is preparing breakfast, Lawrence Tremaine's cat Lucifer chases Gus (Jack Black), one of the mice, into the kitchen. Cedric delivers breakfast to his stepfamily, unaware that Gus is hiding under Anthony (Jacob Bertrand)'s cup. This makes Anthony so angry that he tells his father of the apparent prank, so Lawrence punishes Cedric with extra chores.

Meanwhile, at the house, the King (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) discusses with the Grand Duke, Gordon (Steve Carell) his desire for his daughter Prinella (Mika Abdalla) to settle down and have a date. They organize a party in an effort to find a suitable mate for Prinella without arousing suspicion. Cedric asks his stepfather if he can attend, as the invitation says "every eligible maiden" is to attend. Lawrence agrees, provided that Cedric finishes his chores and finds a nice clothes to wear. Cedric's animal friends, led by Jaq (Steve Zahn), Gus and the other mice, fix up a gown that belonged to Cedric's father using beads and a sash thrown out by Dilian and Anthony, respectively. When Cedric comes down wearing his new clothes, Lawrence compliments the gown, pointing out the beads and the sash. Angered by the apparent theft of their discarded items, the two stepbrothers destroy the gown.

Just as Cedric is about to give up hope, his Fairy Godfather (Ashton Kutcher) appears and turns the remains of Cedric's cloths with his magic wand into a new golden party gown with golden shoes. She also transforms a pumpkin into a car, the mice into horses, her horse Major into a coachman, and his black Siberian husky dog Demon (D.J.) into a footman. Fairy Godfather warns him the spell will break at the stroke of midnight. At the school party, Prinella rejects every boy until she sees Cedric. The two fall strongly in love and dance alone throughout the school grounds until the clock starts to chime midnight. Cedric flees to his coach and away from the school, losing one of his gold shoe. After his gown turns back into rags, the mice point out that the other shoe is still on his foot.

Back at the house, Gordon tells the King of Prinella's dating with the unknown boy. The King, after hearing that the boy disappeared, and thinking that Gordon was "in league with Prinella all along", goes into a rage and tries to behead him. Fortunately, Gordon is able to calm him down with news of the boy's gold shoe and states that Prinella will only date the boy who fits that shoe.

The next morning, the King proclaims Gordon will visit every house in the town to find the boy whose foot fits the gold shoe. When news reaches Cedric's household, his stepfamily prepare for Gordon's arrival. Overhearing this, Cedric dreamingly hums the song played at the party. Realizing Cedric was the boy who danced with Prinella, Lawrence locks him in the attic.

When Gordon arrives, Jaq and Gus steal the key to Cedric's room, but Lucifer ambushes them before they can free him. With the help of the other animals and Demon, they chase him out the window and Cedric is freed. As Gordon prepares to leave after the stepbrothers have tried to shove their enormous feet into the shoe, Cedric appears and requests to try it on. Knowing the shoe will fit, Lawrence trips the footman, causing him to drop the shoe, which shatters on the floor. Cedric then produces the other gold shoe, much to his stepfather's horror. A delighted Gordon slides the shoe onto his foot, and it fits perfectly.

Cedric and Prinella celebrate their gratuating grade 5 and live happily ever after.
