Captain Planet is a 2024 American superhero film based on the 1990s animated tv series, Captain Planet and the Planeteers, created by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner. The film is directed by Dean Israelite with Pyle joining Leonardo DiCaprio as producers. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers wrote the screenplay, wanting to tell a story that feels like a modern day successor and soft reboot to the series.

The film has a strong cast headlined by Zac Efron, who stars as the eponymous hero, Captain Planet. Zoe Saldaña co-leads as Gaia, the Spirit of Earth. Jacob Lattimore, Olivia Holt, Gianni Paolo, Ki Hong Lee, and Yasmeen Fletcher all star as the new team of planeteers. The focus was to feature a "next generation" of planeteers and not copy the original team featured in the show, the only common characteristic between both squads are their national roots. Michael Shannon, Vanessa Kirby, Bill Skarsgård, and John David Washington round out the main cast. David Harbour, Freddie Stroma, , Sean Gunn, Sofia Black-D'Eliaia, Sam Rockwell, Jennifer Ehle, Rupert Everett, and Gabriel Luna fill out the recurring cast.

In the film, a new team of planeteers must rise up to unite and summon Captain Planet to prevent a ecological catastrophe.

Captain Planet is scheduled to be released on November 15, 2024.

Production[]

Development[]

Development of Captain Planet began early since 1996 when Pyle and Nicholas Boxer wrote a film adaption named Planet but nothing materialized. Another attempt was made a few years later by Michael Reaves, revamping Pyle and Boxer's screenplay to a different one named Dark Planet setting in a post-apocalyptic time period but that failed to go anywhere. Other attempts were made in 2007, 2011, and 2013, yet none of those versions passed.

There was a promising start when in 2016 Paramount Pictures and Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way Pictures was trying to developed something together. But that version failed. Appian Way tried again in 2022 and finally found a partner with Lionsgate and another studio, Safehouse Pictures. Momentum of this version grew when Lionsgate hired the writing partners of Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. McKenna and Sommers grew up as fans of the show and wanted to honor it in a way while featuring it in a modern setting, seeing how current events seems to be perfect. They chose to introduce a new team of Planeteers instead of featuring the original crew of Kwame, Wheeler, Linka, Gi, and Ma-Ti; paving the way for them to have a blank slate yet still feature some essence of what made the animated series so successful. Lionsgate hired Dean Isarelite to direct the film, seeing how he had the experience directing a film featuring a team of young heroes like what he did with 2017's Power Rangers.

Pre-production[]

Zoe Saldaña became the first cast hiring, casting as Gaia. Zac Efron was then confirmed a week later playing Captain Planet. Lionsgate went on a massive search for the actors and actresses performing the new team of Planeteers. Soon Jacob Lattimore, Olivia Holt, Gianni Paolo, Ki Hong Lee, and Yasmeen Fletcher were finally revealed back in June 2023 as the new Planeteers: Jabari, Macy, Dominick, Lang, and Zo.

Michael Shannon was soon cast as one of the primary antagonists, Looten Plunder; Vanessa Kirby was soon hired there after to play the other antagonist, Dr. Blight. Josh David Washington, Sean Gunn, Gabriel Luna, and Freddie Stroma were soon cast after as Commander Clash Carter, Argus Bleak, General Rubio, and Rogue Slaughter respectively. David Harbour was soon cast to play the other Slaughter brother, Stalker. Bill Skarsgård was later cast as Mr. Skum.

It was confirmed during the showing at 2024's ComicCon that Linda Hamilton was playing Mame Slaughter, the mother of the Slaughter Brothers; while also revealing other big casting news like LeVar Burton and Kath Soucie, who both voiced Kwame and Linka in the animated show, were confirmed to have cameos as their live action counterparts. Whoopi Goldberg, who voiced Gaia for the early seasons of the series, was confirmed to have a cameo appearance but as a different character.

Pedro Pascal, John Krasinski, Olivia Wilde, and Elizabeth Olsen were soon cast to voice the lost members of the Elementals, the original group of protectors who sacrificed themselves to allow Zac Efron's character to evolve into a sentient being incorporating all of the powers of the Elementals. Israelite confirmed since Captain Planet never truly had a origin story in the series, they wanted to find a way to portray a origin story mixed in the events of the film's story.

Filming[]

Principal photography began in Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Georgia, Atlanta; New York City, New York; Chicago, Illinois; Prague; Alto Douro, Portugal. Cinematography was done by Micahel J. Lloyd, a frequent contributor that worked with Israelite on his other films.

Post-production[]

Editing will done by another frequent contributor of Israelite, Martin Bernfeld. Dean Zimmerman was hired later on to help finish out the details. Industrial Lights & Magic took care of most of the visual arts.

Music[]

Score[]

Michael Giacchino was confirmed to be the score composer on March 2024, Giacchino wanted to honor the show's theme song and feature a unique heavy orchestral tone similar to how he did with the 60's Spider-Man theme for the Sony/Marvel's Spider-Man series.

Soundtrack[]

Michelle Silverman serves as the Music Supervisor. Imagine Dragons wrote a song entitled, "Whispers", serving as the lead track of the Captain Planet: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Other artists who are featured including Ed Sheeran with "Ignition", Demi Lovato with "Through It All", Arcade Fire with "Madness", Kane Brown with "Savior", and Jaden with "Mind Me Out".
