Batman and Superman is a 2016 American superhero film featuring the DC comics characters Batman and Superman. Directed by Zack Synder, the film is the second instalment of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) following 2013's Man of Steel. It features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons and Holly Hunter.

Plot

During the battle between Superman and General Zod, billionaire Bruce Wayne drives to Wayne Tower but it collapses, too late to save his friends and employees. Seeing Superman as a potential threat to humanity, Bruce decides to come out of retirement as Batman.

To atone for the destruction of Metropolis, Superman has been saving people all around the planet. He learns of a civil war in Kahndaq lead by the current military regime and the rebels army trying to liberate the country. Clark suggests that Superman intervene and Lois Lane warns him to treat carefully. After learning of Batman's form of justice, who is rumoured to have started killing, Clark Kent seeks to expose Batman via Daily Planet articles.

Batman pursues a group of drug dealers, beating them in a brutal fashion, he tracks their leader down to find him shot dead. The police believe Batman killed him. Alfred Pennyworth suggests to Bruce that his increased since coming out of retirement has made the idea Batman is now a killer more believable. Bruce is also working on a prototype suit of armour to fight Superman.

Meanwhile, Lex Luthor unsuccessfully tries to persuade Senator June Finch to allow him to import kryptonite retrieved from the Indian Ocean following Zod's terraforming event, claiming he wants to maintain it as a deterrent against future Kryptonian invasions. He instead makes alternative plans with Finch's subordinate and gains access to Zod's body and the Kryptonian scout ship where he discovers Kryptonite which can make Kryptonian cells degenerate. He also discovers an imprisoned Kryptonian monster named Doomsday.

Clark asks Perry White to assign him to the Bat Vigilante case but White gives him another assignment first, interviewing Lex Luthor, a young billionaire who has taken the world by storm. Lois is sent to Kahndaq to write a piece about the civil war while Clark meets with Lex who mentions the possibly that Superman has a secret identity and is living among the humans and notes the resemblance between Clark Kent and Kal-El. He also reveals he requested the interview with Clark specifically as he has Clark on a short list of people who could be Superman.

Lois is taken hostage in Kahndaq and taken to the country's director, prompting Superman to intervene, destroying their weapons and leaving the palace in ruins. The attack allows rebels to enter the capitol and slaughter the government their supporters but the remains of the Kahndaq army refuse the accept their authority and fighting worsens.

Batman returns to the scene of the previous night's murder he was framed for to investigate but is forced to drop it to deal with a mugging. The mugger is shot by the sniper as the drug dealer and Batman pursues him. He catches the sniper but he shoots himself as police arrive. Perry reluctantly agrees to allow Clark to pursue the case.

Batman breaks into the Gotham City Police Department and receives the bullets used to frame him but is forced to injury several police officers in his escape. His Batmobile is stopped by Superman who tries to reason with him but the Dark Knight instead fights him. After explosives, batarangs and nerve gas fail, Batman uses a high blast of high frequency sonics targeting Superman's heightened senses.

Batman analyses the bullets to find they were manufactured by LexCorp and Luthor had framed him for the murders. Luthor invites Lois to LexCorp with information about the Kahndaq war. Batman confronts Luthor in his office when an explosion injures Luthor and Lois and kills many of Luthor's staff. Superman arrives on the scene as Batman is recovering from the blast. Thinking Batman caused the explosion, Superman attacks him but is stopped by the Kryptonite. Batman leaves with the Kryptonite, intending to use it against Superman later, while Superman rushes Lois and Luthor to hospital.

At a congressional hearing about his actions in metropolis and Kahndaq, Senator Finch questions Superman on the validity of his actions. Superman grows increasingly frustrated with their accusations and tells them he is done with their politics and bureaucracy before a bomb goes off, killing everyone except Superman. Believing he should have detected the bomb, Superman tries to atone by flying to Kahndaq, disarming both sides of the conflict.

Superman returns to Metropolis and learns that Lois has died from the explosion he thinks Batman caused and flies to Gotham to confront him. Batman tries to explain Luthor has set him up but Superman doesn't believe him. Batman hits Superman with everything he's got but nothing stops him. Luthor explains to an alive Lois he is holding captive that he intends for Batman and Superman to fight each other to the death and the survivor would be shown as the monster they are. Failing that, Luthor has discovered a monster imprisoned in the Kryptonian spaceship. Batman is uses the Kryptonite on Superman and attempts to kill him with the Kryptonite spear before realising what he's doing and throwing it away. Superman grabs Batman's throat and almost snaps his neck but then releases and flies off, deciding Earth is better off without him.

Batman flies the Batwing to LexCorp. Luthor tells Batman he deduces his identity, heir of Wayne fortune, born into privilege with a genius intelligent and trained to the peak of human perfection. He has his men attack Batman. Lois breaks free and jumps from the rooftop, calling for Superman. Realizing Lois is alive, Superman flies back to Earth to save her, catching her before she hits the ground. Lois warns Superman of Luthor's plan and a Kryptonian monster Luthor has. Superman helps Batman against Luthor's men. Luthor tells Superman that by saving the world, he makes it rely on him. Luthor releases the monster, Doomsday.

Batman and Superman fight Doomsday. Superman takes Doomsday out of Earth's atmosphere. The US government consider both of them to be a threat and fires a nuke at them. Doomsday crashes in Gotham, completely unharmed. Batman attacks Doomsday in the Batwing and leads him to Ryker's Island. Superman is healed by the sun and rejoins the fight. He and Batman make their apologises; Batman for letting his fear of Superman turn him into one of the monsters he decocted his life to hunting and Superman for giving him reason to be afraid. Batman realises Doomsday is Kryptonian and uses Kryptonite but Doomsday adapts. To save Batman, Superman takes the Kryptonite spear and impales Doomsday with it. In its death throws, Doomsday impaled Superman. Doomsday is vanquished at the cost of Superman's life.

Luthor is arrested. A month later, the world is mourning Superman. A statue has been placed in Metropolis. Bruce decides to put together a team to protect the world in Superman's absence. After Bruce and Lois leave, the dirt on Superman's coffin begins to levitate.
