College student Sylvia Darling is alone at her home while her parents are out shopping. She is bored, so she calls her boyfriend Xander over and they watch a movie he rented. It is a horror movie, but it is ironically based on American Slasher 3D, called "The Stabbing". Sylvia is scared about the movie, but Xander says it is all fake, and that people just filmed that movie to get attention. Suddenly Xander gets a phone call on his phone and goes to the kitchen. However, there is no one answering. He angrily hangs up. However, Sylvia is missing when he returns, and he looks over the house for her. He is suddenly dragged into a bathroom and attacked by a figure, who is wearing a black bandit mask. He runs into the hallway and bumps into an injured Sylvia, only to get stabbed in the back. Sylvia is dropped down the stairs and is stabbed by a glass shard, and she crawls to the porch injured, only to get dragged back and stabbed to death.

The next morning, several police officers barge into Sylvia's home and find the bodies of Xander and Sylvia-both cut open and hanged by their intestines. It is revealed this was a news story on Tv, in which Kelly is watching. It is also revealed that Kelly is watching this at her dorm in college, along with her roommate and friend Marcia Becker. They are shocked about the deaths, and Kelly is traumatized, as she thinks the killer is coming back. Marcia and her friends Gabe, Lily, Noah, and Lola try to calm her down, but they fail and Kelly ends up bursting into tears.

That night, Mark Raimi, Lola's boyfriend, secretly films a tape of Kelly and Noah making love at Kelly's house. While Lola is waiting for Mark at his house, who lied to her and said he was going to get some air. She goes to the kitchen and hears the door creak, but when she goes there no one is there. She gets a phone call on her cell phone but no one responds, and suddenly a glass is heard breaking upstairs. She rushes upstairs and sees the killer there, who proceeds to fight her and stab her in the shoulder. She punches the killer and locks herself in the bathroom, attempting to crawl out the window. However, the killer breaks in, stabs Lola in the legs and pushes her out the window to her death. She splatters on the yard below, and Mark sees this just as he comes back to his house.

The news gets our quickly, and Kelly, thinking this is all her fault, begins to cry again. Stuck in a sticky situation, the friends seek Professor Hudson and his niece Helena Walker for help. Helena tries to help Kelly with her emotions, and manages to calm her down a little. However, Mark's tape, caught by Professor Hudson, is accidentally taped and exposes Kelly and Noah's secret. Kelly ends up crying again, and Mark is forcibly kicked out of the college for his actions.

At Mark's house, he cries at his karma, and receives a text message saying "Want to see a preview of the new Stabbing movie?", before he gets attacked by the killer. He gets his throat slit and his body is stuffed into the kitchen pantry. Professor Hudson is accused of killing the people because of his recent disappearings, and the funeral for Xander and Sylvia are held. Kelly also is beginning to go crazy searching for the events that they are facing.

Professor Hudson is trialed, found guilty, and put in jail, while Helena and her boyfriend Gabe unsuccessfully try to bail him out. Lily is called by Kelly to comfort her, but is impaled with a machete by the killer. Then Kelly gets attacked when she tries to find Lily, getting stabbed near the heart in the process. Upon this, Professor Hudson is re-trialed and released from prison, and receive a text from Kelly's phone to come to her house right away.

At Kelly's house, Helena, Gabe, Marcia, and Noah arrive with Professor Hudson and try to find Kelly, who is apparently gone missing. Gabe searches in the basement for Kelly, and sees a red liquid flowing, only to see it's spilled paint. Suddenly a bunch of boxes tumble over and expose the killer, who stabs Gabe in the throat and throws him against the stairs. He crawls up and scares Helena, before the killer decapitates him. Then Helena is chased while Professor Hudson tries to save her, only to get shot in the chest twice with a gun. Marcia and Noah follow the duo upstairs.

It turns out to be a trap, as the killer traps Helena, Marcia, and Noah in a bedroom. In the closet, it reveals the real Kelly, who is bound and gagged with rope and tape. The killer unmasks their self as John Decker, superintendent of the college, and Marcia's dad. Then Marcia suddenly pulls out a gun and aims it at Kelly's head, revealing herself as an accomplice. Helena begs why, and John explains that he wanted to create his own news story and finally gain attention, like "The Stabbing" did. He wanted to be framed as a hero, and Marcia is his accomplice. Marcia then tells her dad to kill Kelly, but he suddenly betrays his daughter by shooting her in the back four times.

Noah helps Kelly escape the ropes, and together the three fight John. However, he shoots Kelly, this time directly in the heart, and she collapses. Helena hits John on the head with a metal baseball bat and Noah uses his gun to shoot him in the chest. Then Professor Hudson suddenly shows up with a knife and uses it to stab John, finally killing him. Helena is shocked and asks how her uncle lived, and he reveals he had a bullet proof vest on at the time. Noah comforts Kelly while she bleeds to death, and her final words are "I love you, Noah...." Before dying.

Sometime later, Helena, Noah, and Professor Hudson are later interviewed by police and become national heroes. I appears in newspapers around the USA, and "The Stabbing 2" is made based on it. However, they cannot get over what happened, especially Noah since his girlfriend died. But everyone eventually accepts that they lived, and they all end up hugging.
