American Horror Story: Hotel is the fifth season of the FX horror anthology television series American Horror Story. It stars Kathy Bates, Dylan McDermott, Sarah Paulson, Even Peters, Matt Bomer, Cheyenne Jackson, Taissa Farmiga, Denis O'Hare, with Angela Bassett and Lady Gaga.

Plot

In 2015, in Downton Los Angeles, a sober private investigator John Lowe (Dylan McDermott) attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter Alex (Taissa Farmiga) after a divorce. However, the two find themselves in the haunted Hotel Cortez, which is inhabited by its disturbed staff and guests, ghosts and a demon, and caught in-between the tensions between the inhabitants.

• Kathy Bates as Iris: The manager of the Hotel Cortez who works at the reception desk. Despite hating staying at the hotel, she remains in order to keep proximity to her son Matthew, who despises her after she killed his father because he was a bad influence.
• Dylan McDermott as John Lowe: A private investigator who turned sober, after being left by his ex-wife Scarlett and daughter Alex because of his alcoholism.
• Sarah Paulson as "Hypodermic" Sally McKenna: A drug addict who died at the Hotel Cortez and since became a staff member, maintaining a rivalry with Iris.
• Evan Peters as James Patrick March: A wealthy oil businessman and serial killer, who used his money to construct the Hotel Cortez in the late 1920s, built to serve his need to kill.
• Matt Bomer as Matthew "Donovan": The arrogant vampire resident of the hotel who is the "romantic" partner of Elizabeth since 1995.
• Cheyenne Jackson as Will Drake: The ex-boyfriend of Matthew who became a ghost after he was killed by Matthew so he can be with Elizabeth.
• Taissa Farmiga as Alex Holden-Lowe: John's estranged daughter who recently graduated college and has an internet addiction.
• Denis O'Hare as Liz Taylor: The eccentric, transgender bartender of the Blue Parrot Lounge and long-time staff member of the hotel.
• Angela Bassett as Ramona Royale: A well known former actress and Elizabeth's ex-lover, who became a ghost by mysterious circumstances.
• Lady Gaga as Elizabeth Johnson "The Countess": The enigmatic, malevolent vampire owner who resides in the penthouse of the Hotel Cortez, also a former actress.

Supporting Cast

• Finn Wittrock as Tristan Duffy: A male model and murder addict who is attracted to Elizabeth.
• Chloë Sevigny as Dr. Scarlett Holden: A psychiatrist who divorced John and left him with Alex.
• Lily Rabe as Aileen: John's assistant, whom he had an affair with during his alcoholism, who continues to work for him despite the affair.
• James Cromwell as Donovan: The drug-addicted father of Matthew and abusive husband of Iris who was killed by Iris for being a bad influence on their son. Matthew refers to himself after him, because he admired his father.
• Richard T. Jones as Andrew Hahn: John's partner in crime.

Creator's Notes

• This is simply how I would have done American Horror Story: Hotel.
• Many, including myself, felt that the season was the weakest compared to the others. My biggest issue was that the story and character arcs were a mess. I wanted to do something that doesn't have that problem.
• The season focuses on themes of addiction, obsession, sanity, control, and freedom.
