- ❝ I don't know if you've gotten the crap kicked out of you, weren't strong enough to protect something or just straight-up failed and lost everything. The past doesn't define you. The present does. Every action you make has consequences. For better or for worse, you've got to learn how to live with it. My name is Alex Mars. Others call me... Spawn.❞
- ―Alex Mars, TO BE DETERMINED
Alex Mars is the protagonist of the fanfiction story, Spawn: The Recall. He is the main male character and the second Spawn, succeeding Al Simmons.
Initially a mere delinquent who drifted away from his controlling parents, he found a family with the Fitzgeralds, though he struggles to cope with the fact that he is now being hounded by both the forces of Heaven and Hell.
Appearance[]
Generally speaking, Alex Mars is a young teenager with messy brown hair and red eyes. In the winter, he is often found wearing a white hoodie and occasionally has red-highlighted headphones around his neck.
As Spawn, Alex has a noticably more feral look compared to Al's time, largely due to the fact that, following the "reset" of the newly born Earth-53, Alex's soul couldn't handle Al translating his experience over to him, causing Spawn to resort to his more basic instincts.
Personality[]
By his own admission, Alex describes himself as something of a punk. He left home at an early age, finding his life with his parents stifling and unable to handle the harsh glares of disappointment. He considered them controlling and wanted to live a free life, though it resulted in a harsh life out in the streets. The experience has toughened him and thus hardly relies on anyone. However, Wanda Blake's kindness and constant interference in his life has brought him a newfound sense of self. While he still finds his life lacking, he enjoys his time with the people he considers his "second family." In actuality, deep down, he considers the Fitzgeralds to be his true family.
Alex doesn't really think much about heroes, often agreeing with one of the news anchors in the city that they're more or less putting the "less-than-ideal" police force to shame. That being said, he holds some respect towards certain vigilantes. Due to his street life, he came to believe that often at times, force and brutality is the only way to get a message across. This leads him to get along rather well with Jason Todd; a vigilante who kills criminals. That being said, Alex doesn't actually hate criminals. Rather, he understands that, in certain situations, this life is the only option. There are exceptions to this, however, and he is perfectly capable of loathing certain villains. Prime examples are the likes of the Riddler, Killer Croc and even the Joker, though the latter is primarily due to his interactions with Clown.
Initially, when Alex first became Spawn, he was horrified by his transformation and wanted nothing to do with his newfound abilities, even considering them a curse and a danger to both himself and others around him, briefly distancing himself from the Fitzgeralds out of fear of hurting them. Later on, he has begrudgingly come to find use for his powers and slowly, but surely, realizes what sort of things he could accomplish with them. For the first time in his life, he finally found a purpose in his life, even if it comes with intense baggage.
Notably, Alex has begun to inherit traits from Simmons, possibly due to the latter's soul translating his knowledge over to the newborn Spawn. He has begun to grow increasingly protective of his new family, particularly towards Wanda and Cyan and, following his meeting with Jason Wynn and discovering why he killed Al Simmons in the first place, developed an intense hatred for the man, personally vowing to make his life a living hell. He has also begun to see his brawls as him "waging war," sometimes adopting a soldier mentality. Earliest signs of this are shown when he faced off against the likes of Overkill: he recognized the cyborg as a threat, analyzed his combat abilities, probed his defenses and formulated a strategy. All the while still in his otherwise feral disposition.
When Alex first became Spawn, due to his otherwise "newborn" soul unable to properly understand the knowledge Al Simmons' soul was translating to it, he acted feral and beast-like, relying on innate instinct. He was very much like a wild animal: attacking viciously and relentless in his pursuit, but still capable of identifying friend from foe. However, due to his nature as a Hell-Spawn, Alex is very much likely to resort to more brutal methods and even involve bystanders, something that he tries to avoid if possible.
History[]
Pre-Armageddon "Reset"[]
Before Spawn's homeworld was consumed in the ensuing battle between the forces of Heaven and Hell, he was nothing more than a kid who dealt with controlling parents for most of his life. Whenever he failed to meet their expectations or did something they didn't like, they disciplined him and treated him horribly. Eventually, at a young age, Alex left home and took to the streets. Though street life was hard, he adjusted fairly quickly and picked up many skills, primarily pickpocketing.
One day, as he was heading to the red-light district, his wallet was taken by a kid and chased after him. Shortly afterwards, while he was chasing after him, Alex was hit by an oncoming car and put into a coma. It is unknown if he would have woken up from his coma, though he, like the rest of humanity, had most likely been already killed off by the time Armageddon had finished.
The Recall[]
The Hellbound[]
After Spawn borrowed power from another universe in order to remake his homeworld, Alex's fate became changed. One year later, he awoke from his coma. Sometime after that, Alex met Wanda Blake, who had been working for a troubled youth's program. Alex was surprised by Wanda's kindness, the first real taste of actual care, and went along with the program, eventually returning back out into the streets after eight months. However, Alex dropped out of high school and took to part-time jobs to pay for his living expenses.
By a stroke of luck, a babysitting job had him meeting with Wanda again, which led to him becoming well acquainted with the Fitzgerald family. He would consider them to be his second family, though deep down, Alex secretly believes that the Fitzgeralds are his true family. He is still distant from his parents and refuses to contact them, sometimes believing that he should disown himself.
As he spends one of his free days for dinner with Wanda and her family, Alex has a massive headache, feeling intense pain and collapses to the floor.
Powers[]
Though he is human, Alex is considered by both Heaven and Hell to be a Hell-Spawn, due to possessing the powers of one. Among those powers are enhanced durability, super strength, increased reflexes and even a minor healing factor. All of which is without the aid of Necroplasm or tapping into his full potential.

As Spawn, Alex has temporarily forfeited his humanity. Notably, his appearance is much more bestial compared to Al Simmons, possessing sharper claws and even a mouth with jagged teeth. By becoming a Hell-Spawn, Alex has an impressive pain tolerance, ignoring almost any wounds inflicted upon him and can lift objects several times his own weight. His durability also increases, capable of surviving a building collapsing on top of him with relatively minor injuries. His healing factor also increases substantially as well. His claws are even capable of ripping through steel walls with incredible ease.
Much like other Hell-Spawn, Alex has a finite amount of Necroplasm, which diminishes with each usage of the magical arts. Initially, he could only do simple things, such as stripping souls from mortal bodies, healing fatal injuries and changing his appearance, though under the teachings of Doctor Fate, he's learned more complex abilities. The suit attached to his body also reacts strongly to his will: it can create chains that move in correspondence to his thoughts, a cape that allows him to camouflage his form and even allow him to fly.
Unlike other Hell-Spawn, though, Doctor Fate has stated that Alex can replenish his necroplasm via "demonic methods," but warns that in doing so, he chips off more and more of his humanity, implying that committing these actions will result in him becoming a full Hell-Spawn.

Notes[]
- Alex's backstory as a character with a troubled past is made as homage to other characters of the same archtype, albeit with more defining character traits.
- His Spawn persona is modeled after Al Simmons' "Spawn: Resurrection" form.
- Ironically, one of Alex's titles by Cogliostro is "The Redeemer." One of Spawn's most powerful enemies is also known by the name "Redeemer," or sometimes called "Anti-Spawn."
